New York City is closing tunnel that supplies half of its water for a major $2 billion repair

New York City is closing tunnel that supplies half of its water for a major billion repair

A section of aqueduct that supplies about half of New York City’s water will be shut down for the winter as part of a $2 billion project to fix massive leaks under the Hudson River.

The temporary closure of the Delaware Aqueduct in upstate New York has been in the works for years, and officials are continually increasing capacity from other parts of the city’s sprawling 19-reservoir system. Water will flow continuously from city faucets after the shutdown begins this week, officials said. However, its famously crisp taste may be compromised as other sources become more exploited.

“The water will always be there,” said Paul Rush, deputy commissioner of the city’s Department of Environmental Protection. “We will be changing the mix of water that consumers receive.”

The Delaware Aqueduct is the longest tunnel in the world, transporting water over 85 miles (137 kilometers) from four reservoirs in the Catskill region to other reservoirs in the city’s northern suburbs. In operation since 1944, it supplies about half of the 1.1 billion gallons (4.2 billion liters) consumed daily by more than 8 million New York City residents. The system also serves some upstate communities.

But the aqueduct releases up to 35 million gallons (132 million liters) of water every day, almost all of it from a section well below the Hudson River.

The major leak has been known for decades, but city officials faced a dilemma: They couldn’t decommission the critical aqueduct for years to repair the tunnel. Instead, they began building a parallel, 4-kilometer-long bypass tunnel under the river about a decade ago.

The new tunnel will be connected during the decommissioning, which is expected to last up to eight months. More than 40 miles (64 kilometers) of the aqueduct, which descends from the four hinterland reservoirs, will be out of service during this time, but a section closer to the city will remain in use.

Additional leaks further north in the aqueduct will also be repaired in the coming months.

Rush said the work was planned to avoid the summer months when demand is higher. The city has also spent years making improvements to other parts of the system, some of which are more than 100 years old.

“There’s a lot of thought going on about where the alternative supply is going to come from,” Rush said.

The capacity of the supplemental Catskill Aqueduct has been increased, and more drinking water will come from the Croton Watershed’s dozen reservoirs and three lakes in the city’s northern suburbs.

Greater reliance on these suburban reservoirs could affect the taste of the water because more minerals and algae are present in the Croton system, city officials say.

“While some residents may notice a temporary, subtle difference in taste or aroma during repairs, changes in taste do not mean there is something wrong with the water,” DEP Commissioner Rohit Aggarwala said in a prepared statement. “Just like different brands of bottled water, it tastes a little different, just like our different reservoirs.”

Mel Kiper: Travis Hunter No. 1 on 2025 NFL Draft Big Board and “Not Going Anywhere” | News, results, highlights, statistics and rumors

Julio Aguilar/Getty Images

ESPN NFL Draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. revealed that Colorado Buffaloes two-way star Travis Hunter is at the top of his list for the 2025 NFL Draft.

“He’s been No. 1 on my big board all season and he’s not going anywhere,” Kiper wrote. “The hand-eye coordination, ball skills and speed are all outstanding. And the way he thinks about the game never fails to capture my attention. This is a guy who has played the entire game practically every week, but he’s still so caught up in it. “He’s out there counting how many players are on the field on punt plays.

“Simply put, Hunter does things we rarely, if ever, see in college football; he has six touchdown catches and two interceptions,” he added.

The 21-year-old has once again excelled on both sides of the ball this season, as his 46 catches in five games are the most of any Big 12 player. Hunter has also recorded 561 yards and six touchdowns, an average of 112.2 yards per game.

He also made an impact as a cornerback, recording 16 tackles, two interceptions and a forced fumble.

The heavy workload didn’t bother Hunter, as he only missed a total of two offensive and defensive shots throughout Colorado’s season-opening win over North Dakota State.

If he can maintain his individual performance while helping the Buffaloes continue to improve after their 4-1 start to the year, the buzz around him as a potential top draft choice should continue to grow.

3 Common Ways to Forecast Currency Exchange Rates

3 Common Ways to Forecast Currency Exchange Rates

Being able to forecast exchange rates provides insight into the movement of the global economy. Many methods of forecasting currency exchange rates exist, including purchasing power parity, relative economic strength, and econometric models.

These strategies for forecasting currency movements can be broadly categorized as forms of fundamental or technical analysis. Some analysts also make use of market-based analysis and new-based analysis. Often, a combination of tools provides the most accurate forecast of how exchange rates will vary over time.

Key Takeaways

  • Currency exchange rate forecasts help brokers, businesses, governments, and other organizations maximize profits and minimize risks in a global economy.
  • Purchasing power parity looks at the prices of goods in different countries and is a widely used forecasting method.
  • The relative economic strength approach compares levels of economic growth across countries to predict how exchange rates will change.
  • Econometric models attempt to analyze how a wide range of economic variables can be used to predict trends in currency markets.
  • Many methods of forecasting exchange rates can broadly categorized as fundamental or technical analysis.

Why Forecast Exchange Rates

Understanding how exchange rates are likely to move can help organizations and individuals make informed decisions about when, when, and how to use their money. This can help to minimize risks and maximize returns in a global economy where economic changes in one country can create impacts around the world.

Some groups that can benefit from exchange rate forecasting include:

  • Brokers
  • Businesses
  • Traders
  • Government agencies
  • Investment banks

Fundamental vs. Technical Analysis

Methods for forecasting exchange rates generally fall into one of two categories: fundamental analysis or technical analysis. Both types of analysis attempt to predict price movements, and they can be used by individuals, businesses, and institutions to identify opportunities for making a profit in the global economy.

Fundamental Analysis

Fundamental analysis looks at economic factors that reflect the intrinsic value of an asset. In the case of exchange rates, the asset would be a currency. Areas of fundamental analysis include:

  • Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
  • Consumer Price Index (GDP)
  • Purchasing power parity (PPP)
  • Interest rates

Technical Analysis

Technical analysis, on the other hand, looks at statistical changes to evaluate an asset’s price. When forecasting exchange rates, this means looking at trends in exchange rates over time to predict the strength of one currency relative to another.

This often involves plotting trends in currency prices and exchange rates against factors such as inflation, interest rates, and GDP growth. These models can then be analyzed for trendlines and patterns that can be used to forecast future changes.

Exchange rates can also be predicted through market analysis, which looks at stock market trends, or new-based analysis, which tracks global current events and their impact on currencies.

Common Ways to Forecast Exchange Rates

Fundamental and technical analysis reflect different ways of analyzing economic patterns. In practice, many forecasters will make use of both types of analysis to create the most accurate predictions possible.

Three common metrics used to forecast the movements of exchange rates are purchasing power parity, relative economic strength, and econometric modeling.

Purchasing Power Parity

The purchasing power parity (PPP) is one of the most popular methods for exchange rate forecasting. The PPP forecasting approach is based on the theoretical law of one price, which states that identical goods in different countries should have identical prices in a free market.

According to purchasing power parity, a pencil in Canada should be the same price as a pencil in the United States after taking into account the exchange rate and excluding transaction and shipping costs. In other words, there should be no arbitrage opportunity for someone to buy inexpensive pencils in one country and sell them in another for a profit.

The PPP approach forecasts that the exchange rate will change to offset price changes due to inflation based on this underlying principle.

Example of Purchasing Power Parity

Suppose that the prices of pencils in the U.S. are expected to increase by 4% over the next year while prices in Canada are expected to rise by only 2%. The inflation differential between the two countries is:

4 % 2 % = 2 % \begin{aligned} &4\% – 2\% = 2\% \\ \end{aligned}
4%2%=2%

This means that prices of pencils in the U.S. are expected to rise faster relative to prices in Canada. In this situation, the purchasing power parity approach would forecast that the U.S. dollar would have to depreciate by approximately 2% to keep pencil prices between both countries relatively equal. So, if the current exchange rate was 90 cents U.S. per one Canadian dollar, then the PPP would forecast an exchange rate of:

( 1 + 0.02 ) × ( US $ 0.90  per CA $ 1 ) = US $ 0.92  per CA $ 1 \begin{aligned} &( 1 + 0.02 ) \times ( \text{US \$}0.90 \text{ per CA \$}1 ) = \text{US \$}0.92 \text{ per CA \$}1 \\ \end{aligned}
(1+0.02)×(US $0.90 per CA $1)=US $0.92 per CA $1

In other words, an analysis using purchasing power parity would predict a new exchange rate of $0.92 USD to $1 CAD.

One of the most well-known applications of the PPP method is illustrated by the Big Mac Index, compiled and published by The Economist. This lighthearted index attempts to measure whether a currency is undervalued or overvalued based on the price of Big Macs in various countries. Since Big Macs are nearly universal in all the countries they are sold, a comparison of their prices serves as the basis for the index.

However, purchasing power parity assumes a free and logical market that does not always exist in the real world. Consumer behavior, inflation, transport costs, and tariffs can all impact prices, meaning that the same goods often will vary in price around the world, even once exchange rates are taken into account.

Relative Economic Strength

The relative economic strength approach looks at the strength of economic growth in different countries to forecast the direction of exchange rates. The rationale behind this approach is that a strong economic environment and potentially high growth are more likely to attract investments from foreign investors. To purchase investments in the desired country, an investor would have to purchase the country’s currency, creating increased demand that should cause the currency to appreciate.

This approach doesn’t only look at the relative economic growth between countries. It takes a more general view and looks at all investment flows. For instance, another factor that can draw investors to a certain country is interest rates. High interest rates will attract investors looking for the highest yield on their investments, causing demand for the currency to increase, which again would result in an appreciation of the currency.

Conversely, low interest rates can also sometimes induce investors to avoid investing in a particular country or even borrow that country’s currency at low interest rates to fund other investments. Many investors did this with the Japanese yen when the interest rates in Japan were at extreme lows. This strategy is commonly known as the carry trade.

The relative economic strength method doesn’t forecast what the exchange rate should be, unlike the PPP approach. Rather, this approach forecasts the strength of a currency’s movement in one direction or another, providing a general sense of whether a currency is going to appreciate or depreciate. It is typically used in combination with other forecasting methods to produce a complete result.

Econometric Modeling

Another common method used to forecast exchange rates involves gathering factors that might affect currency movements and creating a model that relates these variables to the exchange rate. The factors used in econometric models are typically based on economic theory, but any variable can be added if it is believed to significantly influence the exchange rate.

Some factors used in econometric modeling include:

  • Interest rates
  • GDP
  • Income growth
  • Stock market growth
  • Unemployment rates

Economic metric models can provide insights into exchange rate trends based on trends in economic patterns. However, like all statistical tools, they do not necessarily provide insight into why these trends occur. When using econometric models, it is important not to confuse correlation and causation.

Example of Econometric Modeling

Suppose that a forecaster for a Canadian company has been tasked with forecasting the USD/CAD exchange rate over the next year.

From their research and analysis, the forecaster concludes that the factors that most impact exchange rates are:

The econometric model the researchers creates is shown as:

USD/Cad(1 – Year) = z + a ( INT ) + b ( GDP ) + c ( IGR ) where: z = Constant baseline exchange rate a , b  and  c = Coefficients representing relative weight of each factor INT = Difference in interest rates between U.S. and Canada GDP = Difference in GDP growth rates IGR = Difference in income growth rates \begin{aligned} &\text{USD/Cad(1 – Year)} = z + a( \text{INT} ) + b( \text{GDP} ) + c( \text{IGR} ) \\ &\textbf{where:} \\ &z = \text{Constant baseline exchange rate} \\ &a, b \text{ and } c = \text{Coefficients representing relative} \\ &\text{weight of each factor} \\ &\text{INT} = \text{Difference in interest rates between} \\ &\text{U.S. and Canada} \\ &\text{GDP} = \text{Difference in GDP growth rates} \\ &\text{IGR} = \text{Difference in income growth rates} \\ \end{aligned}
USD/Cad(1 – Year)=z+a(INT)+b(GDP)+c(IGR)where:z=Constant baseline exchange ratea,b and c=Coefficients representing relativeweight of each factorINT=Difference in interest rates betweenU.S. and CanadaGDP=Difference in GDP growth ratesIGR=Difference in income growth rates

After the model is created, the variables INT, GDP, and IGR can be plugged in to generate a forecast. The coefficients a, b, and c will determine how much a certain factor affects the exchange rate and the direction of that effect (whether it is positive or negative).

This method is complex and time-consuming, but once the model is built, new data can be easily acquired and plugged in to generate quick forecasts.

What Is Purchasing Power Parity?

Purchasing power parity is a macroeconomic theory that compares the economic productivity and standard of living between two countries by looking at the ability of their currencies to purchase the same “basket of goods.” Under this theory, two currencies are in equilibrium when the price of the same basket of goods is equal in both currencies, accounting for exchange rates.

Who Needs to Forecast Exchange Rates?

Being able to forecast exchange rates provides insight into the movement of the global economy. This information is necessary for individuals such as investors, brokers, and forex traders; business of any size that have an international presence; and large organizations such as central banks, governments, and financial institutions.

Why Is Forecasting Exchange Rates a Challenge?

Forecasting exchange rates is a challenge because of the variety of factors that impact economies. Interest rates, inflation, and rates of economic growth vary from country to country, and both local and worldwide events can change them in unexpected ways. Because of the interconnected nature of the global economy, economic changes in one country can have a global impact on economic factors such as exchange rates.

The Bottom Line

Forecasting exchange rates is a difficult task. As a result, many companies and investors simply hedge their currency risk rather than attempting to predict how currencies will move. However, those who see value in forecasting exchange rates and want to understand the factors that affect their movements can use a variety of fundamental and technical analysis techniques to begin their research.

Ireland Women: Victory over New Zealand, highlight of the Ireland roller coaster ride

Ireland Women: Victory over New Zealand, highlight of the Ireland roller coaster ride

As results and performances have deteriorated, off-field events have often been chaotic in recent years, and relations between elite players and some administrators have sometimes been strained.

In February 2020, the IRFU apologized to the Welsh women after they were forced to take cold showers following their defeat to Ireland in the Six Nations tournament.

Later, in September 2021, with the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic still being felt, the governing body launched a review after Ulster and Connacht players had to be moved next to rubbish bins at a women’s inter-provincial match in Dublin.

Covid guidelines in place at the time meant women’s rugby was not classed as an ‘elite sport’, so changing rooms at Energia Park were not open.

Controversy arose two months later when IRFU chief executive Philip Browne re-emphasized the organisation’s commitment to women’s football while acknowledging that structures needed to be addressed after women’s rugby director Anthony Eddy was criticized for doing so by current and former players that he insisted on the 15-on-15 game. Sideplay had not been overlooked.

Ireland’s front row Cliodhna Moloney famously likened Eddy’s comments to “spreading manure” as relations between many Irish squad members and some of the sport’s senior officials deteriorated.

In December that year, a large group of former and current Irish rugby players escalated their grievances when they signed a letter to the Irish government expressing the loss of “all confidence in the IRFU”.

The letter asked for the government’s support in implementing “meaningful change” in women’s football in Ireland.

In response, the IRFU said it had “refuted the general tenor of the document” and was disappointed by the timing of its publication.

A report published a year later found that, following an independent review, the IRFU allocated €1 million to support the development of facilities and pathways in women’s football.

Haason Reddick cannot be traded back to the Eagles from the NY Jets

Haason Reddick cannot be traded back to the Eagles from the NY Jets

There have been rumors about Haason Reddick being open to returning to Philadelphia to play for the Eagles, and while it sounds good, it won’t happen via a trade.

Reddick has yet to play a down for the Jets, while Philadelphia lacks a closer or dominant pass rusher off the edge. What seems like a simple solution of trading Joe Douglas Reddick back to Howie Roseman can’t happen.

According to NFL rules, teams can only trade and reacquire a player after two years have passed. If Reddick were to return to the Eagles, he would have to be released or traded to Philadelphia by another team, which would have to acquire the pass rusher from the Jets.

Last season, Reddick ranked 15th in the league with 11 sacks and made the Pro Bowl for the second straight year.

He recorded double-digit sacks for the fourth consecutive year, leading his team in that category and ranking 15th in the NFL. Aside from the sacks, however, Reddick’s numbers were poor for his standards.

His 38 tackles were the second-fewest of his career, and he did not force or recover a fumble after forcing five and recovering three last season.

Kris Kristofferson: “Me and Bobby McGee” and 9 other important songs

Kris Kristofferson: “Me and Bobby McGee” and 9 other important songs

Kris Kristofferson hasn’t just written songs like he’s destined for country music’s Mt. Rushmore; With his windswept hair and rugged face, the singer-songwriter also looked like a guy destined for eternity. In the mid-1970s, Kristofferson’s rugged beauty led to a successful sideline as an actor in Hollywood, which included a largely nude role opposite Barbra Streisand in her rock ‘n’ roll remake of “A Star Is Born.” But it was the depth and invention of Kristofferson’s writing – a talent he honed while studying literature at Pomona College and Oxford University – that distinguished a career that spanned from the late 1960s until his death on Saturday at the age of 11 88 years was enough. Here, in the order they were released, are 10 essential Kristofferson songs – his own recordings, those by other singers, and a selection that gives a sense of the lyricism he admired.

1. “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down” (1970)

Johnny Cash gave Kristofferson a No. 1 country hit – and opened countless doors for him in Nashville – with his rendition of this piercing drunkard’s lament, which Cash recorded live at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium during a taping of his popular ABC variety show . But it’s Kristofferson’s own version of his self-titled debut that most clearly captures the deepest despair of a man who “woke up on Sunday morning and had no way to hold my head that didn’t hurt.”

2. Sammi Smith, “Help Me Make It Through the Night” (1970)

Another No. 1 on Billboard’s country singles chart, this dark but deeply sensual account of a one-night stand – “Take the ribbon from my hair, shake it loose and let it fall / Lay soft against your skin, like the shadows on the “wall” (!) – won the Grammy Award for Country Song of the Year at a ceremony where Kristofferson was nominated in that category for three different tunes.

3. Janis Joplin, “Me and Bobby McGee” (1971)

“Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose,” sang Joplin in her signature blues-rock twang—perhaps the best-known piece of wisdom in Kristofferson’s very clever catalog. “Me and Bobby McGee” reached the top of the Hot 100 in March 1971, less than six months after Joplin’s death at age 27.

4. “Loving her was easier (than anything I’ll ever do again)” (1971)

Kristofferson never sounded more like Leonard Cohen than here, raving about a woman’s redemptive devotion in parched vocals while producer Fred Foster added just the right amount of easy-listening schmaltz.

5. “The Pilgrim, Chapter 33” (1971)

An origin story from Jackson Maine.

6. Al Green, “For the Good Times” (1972)

A year after Gladys Knight showed what a soul singer could do with Kristofferson’s material in her 1971 recording of “Help Me Make It,” Green recorded a version of “For the Good Times” (first popularized by Ray Price) whose tidy groove is reminiscent of the loneliest heartbeat in the world.

7. “Why Me” (1972)

Kristofferson’s only chart-topper as a solo artist finds him on his knees, begging God to use him as a vessel: “Maybe, Lord, I can show someone else what I went through on the way back to you.”

8. Willie Nelson, “Please Don’t Tell Me How the Story Ends” (1979)

It says something about the appreciation Nelson has for his old pal’s work that he followed up his blockbuster standard collection Stardust with an album of Kristofferson’s songs, including this beautiful ballad of self-deception that climaxes on one of the highest notes Nelson has ever sung.

9. The Highwaymen, “Highwayman” (1985)

Kristofferson reached No. 1 again with Jimmy Webb’s Metaphysical Daydream, which he recorded as a member of the Highwaymen alongside Cash, Nelson and Waylon Jennings. Following Kristofferson’s death, Nelson is now the only surviving member of this country’s supergroup.

10. “Sister Sinead” (2009)

Like Cash with Rick Rubin, Kristofferson teamed up with producer Don Was to make a series of late-period LPs that not only acknowledged the ravages of time, but also glorified them with growling, up-close vocal performances set against intimate acoustic arrangements. In this warm and witty track from his album Closer to the Bone, he uses this dark perspective to double down on his support for Sinéad O’Connor, whom he famously defended after she was attacked for posting a photo of Pope John Paul II. had torn “Saturday Night Live” in 1992. “It takes effort to stick your neck out / In relation to a target, a big silhouette,” Kristofferson sings, “But some candles flicker and some candles fade / And some burn like that.” true as mine.” Sister Sinéad.”

Verizon Users in Michigan Affected by Outage, Plus: SOS Status, Map

Metro Detroit Verizon customers are reporting service issues Monday that are likely part of a larger connectivity issue that the wireless company told the Free Press began around 9 a.m. and is trying to resolve.

“Some Verizon wireless customers may be experiencing connectivity issues,” the company said in its email to the Free Press. “Our technical teams are working diligently on the problem. We will provide further updates as they become available.”

What does the SOS status mean?

Some customers reported that they cannot make or receive calls but can send text messages. Some phones also display “SOS Only” in the status bar or an SOS icon. This means the phone was not connected to a cellular network, but can still make emergency calls for security reasons in the US and Canada.

In the days of Morse code, SOS stood for “Save our souls” or “Save our ship”, but is the abbreviation for “Emergency”.

Verizon told the Free Press that it was trying to resolve a connection issue that occurred around 9 a.m. Monday.

However, Verizon did not provide details about the cause of the outage or provide an estimated time for resolution.

Downdetector, a website that tracks outages, showed customers reporting outages around that time, and by around 11 a.m. the number of customers rose to over 100,000, although the number declined and was around 80,000 by midday.
