The star actor of “Beverly Hills Cop,” “Midnight Run,” has died at the age of 76

John Ashton, an actor with a long list of film credits who is perhaps best known as police officer John Taggert in the “Beverly Hills Cop” films, has died at the age of 76, according to multiple reports.

Ashton died Thursday in Fort Collins, Colorado, his family announced in a statement released Sunday by Ashton’s manager Alan Somers. A cause of death was initially not known.

Born on February 22, 1948 in Springfield, Massachusetts, Ashton has had more than 200 roles in film, television and stage productions. His early career included several guest appearances on television shows such as “Columbo,” “M*A*S*H,” and “Dallas.”

He had small roles in films such as “Oh, God” and “Breaking Away”, but his first major role was in 1984’s “Beverly Hills Cop” with Eddie Murphy and Judge Reinhold.

He also had roles in the John Hughes films “Some Kind of Wonderful” and “She’s Getting a Baby,” as well as “Beverly Hills Cop II” and “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” which were released on Netflix this year.

But one of his most notable roles was as bounty hunter Marvin Dorfler, Robert De Niro’s main rival in 1987’s Midnight Run.

In July, Ashton spoke to Collider about his audition with De Niro.

“Bobby started giving me these matches and I went to get them and he threw them on the floor and stared at me,” Ashton said. “I was looking at the matches, looked up and said, ‘F– you,’ and he said, ‘F– you too.’ I said, “Go – yourself.” I know every other actor picked that up and handed it to him, and as I was leaving I realized he said, “I want it,” because he wanted someone to stand up to him defends him.”

Ashton attended college in Defiance, Ohio for two years before transferring to the University of Southern California, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in theater, according to Variety.

Ashton is survived by his wife of 24 years, Robin Hoye, two children, three stepchildren, a grandson, two sisters and a brother.

Trump points to new figures on migrants with criminal pasts. Here’s what they show

Trump points to new figures on migrants with criminal pasts. Here’s what they show

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans point to newly released immigration enforcement data to bolster their argument that the Biden administration is admitting migrants who have committed serious crimes free in the US But the numbers were misinterpreted without important context.

Immigration and customs control released data Republican Rep. Tony Gonzales responded to a request he made for information about people under ICE custody who have either been convicted of crimes or are being prosecuted. The Texas District of Gonzales covers an 800-mile stretch of the Mexican border.

Gonzales released the numbers online and they immediately became a flashpoint in the presidential campaign between former President Donald Trump, who did so vowed to carry out mass deportationsand Vice President Kamala Harris. Immigration — and the Biden administration’s record on border security — has become a problem central theme of the election.

Here’s a look at the data and what it shows and what it doesn’t:

What are the numbers?

As of July 21, ICE reported that 662,556 people under its authority had either been convicted of crimes or were being prosecuted. Nearly 15,000 were in custody, but the vast majority – 647,572 – were not.

The numbers of people not detained by ICE included people convicted of serious crimes: 13,099 for murder, 15,811 for sexual assault, 13,423 for weapons offenses and 2,663 for stolen vehicles. The largest single category was traffic offenses with 77,074, followed by assault with 62,231 and dangerous drugs with 56,533.

The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, later clarified that the numbers span decades and those not in its custody may be being held by a state or local agency. For example, someone in state prison for murder could be considered a criminal who is not in ICE custody. They are not being held by federal immigration authorities, but are being detained – a distinction ICE did not make in its report to Gonzales.

Millions of people are on ICE’s “non-detained list,” or people under the agency’s supervision who are not in its custody. Many are awaiting the outcome of their cases in immigration court, including some wearing monitoring devices. Others were released after serving their sentences because their countries did not want to take them back.

What do both sides say about the numbers?

Republicans pointed to the data as evidence that the Biden administration is doing this Allow immigrants into the country with criminal records and doesn’t do enough to throw out those who commit crimes there.

“The truth is clear – illegal immigrants with criminal records are coming into our country. “The data released by ICE is beyond troubling and should be a wake-up call for the Biden-Harris administration and cities across the country that are hiding behind protective measures.” Gonzales said in a press releaseand refers to pledges by local officials to limit their cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

Trump, who has repeatedly depicted that immigrants bring lawlessness and crime to America, tweeted several screenshots of the data with the words: “13,000 CROSSED THE BORDER WITH MURDER CONVICTIONS.”

He also claimed that the numbers correspond to Biden and Harris’ term.

The data is being misinterpreted, Homeland Security said in a statement on Sunday.

“The data goes back decades; This includes individuals who have entered the country in the last 40 years or more and whose custody decisions were largely made long before this administration,” the agency said. “This includes many who are under the jurisdiction of, or currently incarcerated by, federal, state or local law enforcement agencies.”

The department also highlighted what it has done to deport those who do not have the right to remain in America, saying it deported or sent back more than 700,000 people last year, which it said was the highest number since 2010. Homeland Security said it has deported 180,000 people with criminal convictions since President Joe Biden took office.

What’s behind the numbers?

The data not only lists people who entered the country during the Biden administration, but also includes people going back decades and who came during previous administrations, said Doris Meissner, former commissioner of Immigration and Naturalization Service, ICE’s predecessor .

They are accused or convicted of committing crimes in America rather than committing crimes in other countries and then entering the U.S., said Meissner, who is now director of the U.S. Immigration Policy Program at the Migration Policy Institute.

“This does not depend on what the Biden administration has done,” she said. “That certainly includes the Biden years, but that is an accumulation of many years, certainly going back to at least 2010, 2011, 2012.”

A Report 2017 by According to the Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general, as of August 2016, ICE had approximately 368,574 non-detained individuals on its list who were convicted felons. This number will be reached by June 2021 rose to 405,786.

Can’t ICE just deport criminals?

ICE has limited resources. The number of people she cares for has skyrocketed, but the number of staff has not. As the agency noted in a 2023 year-end reportIt often has to send staff to help at the border, which takes it away from its normal duties.

The number of people under ICE surveillance but not in its custody has increased from 3.3 million just before Biden took office to just over 7 million last spring.

“The simple answer is that as a system we have not allocated enough resources to the parts of the government that are responsible for monitoring and ultimately deporting deportable individuals,” Meissner said.

ICE also has logistical and legal limits on who it can detain. The budget allows the agency to accommodate 41,500 people at a time. John Sandweg, who served as acting ICE director from 2013 to 2014 under then-President Barack Obama, said arresting people accused or convicted of the most serious crimes is always a top priority.

But once someone has a final deportation order — meaning a court has determined they don’t have the right to stay in the country — they can’t be held in custody forever while ICE determines how to bring them home. A 2001 Supreme Court ruling has essentially prevented ICE from detaining these people for longer than six months when there is no reasonable chance that they can be returned.

Not every country is ready to take back its citizens, said Sandweg.

He said he suspects that a large number of people convicted of murder but not held by ICE are people who have been deported but the agency cannot deport them because their home country won’t take them back.

“It’s a very common scenario. Even in the countries that take people back, they can be very selective about who they take back,” he said.

The U.S. could also face problems deporting people to countries with which it has lukewarm relations.

Homeland Security did not respond to questions about how many countries would not take back their citizens. The 2017 watchdog report puts the number at 23 countries, plus another 62 that were cooperative but experienced delays in obtaining things like passports or travel documents.

Here’s how to start Valve’s “deadlock.”

Here’s how to start Valve’s “deadlock.”

When it became known discovered that thousands of players were already playing Valve’s “secret” shooter deadlock was released on Steam in August, the first reaction of many was: How do I get my hands on this?

Since then, many more players have joined the invitation-only playtest and gotten a first look at the project. Valve released the game on Steam a few weeks ago, but did not give the game a release date. “deadlock is a multiplayer game in early development,” Valve wrote on the game’s Steam page.

If you’re new to the game and are curious, here’s what you need to know.

what is deadlock and why are people so excited about it?

Valve, the famous developer of franchises like Half-life, portalAnd counterattack, has greatly slowed the development of new titles, so every new IP is cause for excitement. deadlock is a six-on-six team game that showcases the hero shooter personality of for example Overwatch, Apex Legendsand Valve’s own Team Fortress 2 with some of the multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) mechanics popularized by. League of Legends and valves Dota 2.

A MOBA typically consists of elements such as home bases, towers that each side must defend, minions that aid the main characters in battles, and progressive skill improvement over the course of a game. If you’ve never played a MOBA before, deadlock It can seem overwhelming at first due to the resource management required in addition to the action shooter elements.

OK, I’m sold. How do I play?

You need a Steam account and an invitation to playtest. Some players were randomly invited by Valve to play the game, possibly based on their history with other Valve titles. However, the easiest way to participate is to ask someone in the playtest to invite you. This is an in-game menu option.

To see which of your Steam friends are playing deadlockVisit the game’s page and look under Friends Who Play in the right pane.

An invitation may take a day or longer to reach you after you send it. Once you have it, you can download and install the game.

This might be a good place to warn you: deadlock is still a work in progress and therefore it is likely that a lot will change before the official release. As of this writing, there is only one map called “street_test” and the list of 21 heroes and their abilities may evolve with future updates.

My gaming group found the game remarkably stable and polished, considering it’s still in its early stages of development. However, that doesn’t mean that there won’t be any bugs, glitches or crashes in the game. The playtest is free; Don’t expect the kind of customer support or immersive experience you would get from a retail game.

Learning the ropes (and rails)

First things first: Whether you have MOBA experience or not, Deadlocks A series of Learn to Play tutorials are a must. They’ll show you how objects and controls work in Get Started, how to familiarize yourself with the game’s 21 characters and their abilities in Builds, and the paths that lead to victory in Lane Training “, a guided quest through the game, city map works.

Once you’ve completed these three guides, you’ll have the basics of how the controls work, how to purchase and upgrade your character’s items and abilities during a match, and how souls, the game’s currency, work.

What to watch in the Walz-Vance vice presidential debate

What to watch in the Walz-Vance vice presidential debate

ATLANTA (AP) — Republicans JD Vance and democrat Tim Waltz will meet in the only vice-presidential debate on Tuesday Election 2024by bringing together undercards who have spent two months competing against each other and the opposing nominees who top the major party tickets.

The match, hosted by CBS News in New York, may not have the same stakes as the former president’s Sept. 10 debate Donald Trump and vice president Kamala Harris. But it offers her top lieutenants a new opportunity to step forward, vouch for their superiors and assume the time-honored role of a vice president: attack dog. It will include the largest television and online audience to watch No. 2 before Election Day.

Walz, the 60-year-old governor of Minnesota, and Vance, a 40-year-old US senator from Ohio, have been eyeing possible approaches for weeks. Walz, before Harris picked him, was the Democrat who voted for him coined by “strange” as a derogatory slur for the Republican ticket. Vance criticizes the governor’s progressive record as evidence that Democrats are too far left for voters.

Vance has made fun of his comrade’s military service. Walz criticizes Vance’s opposition to abortion rights and his views on family life. Both men have demonstrated their credentials as small-town, middle-America residents – in contrast to Trump, the billionaire New Yorker, and Harris, a California native from the Bay Area.

It sets up a potentially violent night in Manhattan. Here are the dynamics to consider when the rivals meet in person for the first time:

Is it more Walz vs. Vance or Harris vs. Trump?

Running mates have a balancing act. Their main job is to advocate for their superiors. But a vice presidential candidate’s credibility and connection to the audience are important factors in achieving this goal. If a voter doesn’t like Messenger, they are less likely to buy the message.

Getting into the debate, a new AP-NORC poll suggests that Walz is more popular than Vance, potentially posing a greater challenge to the Republican.

The poll found that only a quarter of registered voters have a somewhat or very favorable opinion of the Ohio senator, while about half have a somewhat or very unfavorable opinion. About a quarter don’t know enough to say. Walz is rated positively by about 4 in 10 voters and negatively by about 3 in 10; The rest don’t know enough to say.

Still, Sen. Tim Kaine, a Virginia Democrat and 2016 vice presidential candidate, warned attendees not to think too much about themselves.

“The only advice that matters is to protect the top of the ticket,” Kaine insisted, recalling the 2000 duel between Republican Dick Cheney and Democrat Joe Lieberman. “Cheney continued to attack (Al) Gore, and Lieberman tried to make himself sympathetic instead of defending Gore. … You can’t leave attacks unanswered.”

Abortion rights and views on family will be at the forefront

Democrats believe Abortion Rights and Reproductive Health Care will motivate their regular voters and influence swing voters.

Walz has already tried to capitalize on this by mixing his story into the argument. The governor often talks about how he and his wife Gwen required fertility treatments to have her daughter. Democrats resented Vance for this 2021 joke about “childless cat ladies” shapes American life. And Walz was eager to echo Harris’ emphasis on abortion rights as the anchor of her overall campaign theme: “Freedom.”

Vance and Trump, meanwhile, have struggled to deliver a unified message on abortion rights — a reflection of how politically fraught the issue has become for Republicans since then Support for abortion access has increased since then 2022 Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade and end a woman’s constitutional right to have an abortion. Trump boasts about appointing conservatives who helped defeat Roe and return abortion regulation to state governments. Many Republicans now want to go beyond state bans and limit the process at the federal level, but Trump has suggested that repealing Roe is enough. He has it too wavered over how he would vote on a referendum in Florida that would expand abortion rights.

What you should know about the 2024 election

Vance said in August that Trump would veto a national ban if it were approved by Congress. A few weeks later, during Trump’s debate with Harris, the former president declined to answerHe said, “I haven’t discussed it with JD.” The Harris campaign reinforced Vance’s statement as a Senate candidate that he would like to see a nationwide ban on abortion.

Vance and Walz compete for economic advantage

Vance often makes clearer arguments than Trump when it comes to boosting American manufacturing, helping workers and punishing companies. He regularly attacks the Biden-Harris administration over inflation. If there’s one broad issue on which Vance wants to put Walz on the defensive and President Joe Biden on the Democratic ticket, it’s the economy.

For her part, Harris declares that “building the middle class will be a critical goal of my presidency.” She acknowledges the struggles of many consumers but generally defends Biden’s overall record of economic growth, low unemployment and rising wages since he inherited the COVID-19 freefall.

Both campaigns contain competing packages of economic proposals, including different tax cuts and subsidies for specific sectors. Expect the candidates to spend a lot of time convincing the dwindling portion of persuadable voters that their ticket better fits the everyday economic concerns of most U.S. households.

The two are expected to talk about their Central American roots

Even if the debate is about Harris and Trump, the two candidates have come here not least because of their respective biographies.

Trump’s election was an attempt to further solidify the Republican Party as an electoral vehicle for Middle America. The author of the memoir “Hillbilly Elegy,” who grew up in small-town Ohio, has roots that match his economic populism in a way that billionaire Trump does not.

Walz and Harris both grew up in the middle class, but Walz remains firmly rooted there, from his childhood on a farm in Nebraska to the high school classrooms of Minnesota before he ran for office. It is both a juxtaposition and an affirmation of Harris’ story as the daughter of an Indian mother and a Jamaican father.

Both men have made their families part of their political identities. Everyone has a working spouse. Walz has two children – a young adult and a teenager. Vance has three young sons. The Walzes and Vances are more traditional political families than those of the presidential candidates: Harris has adult stepchildren from her 10-year marriage to Doug Emhoff; Trump has five children from three marriages.

Even as they try to keep their bosses in the spotlight, expect both vice presidents to emphasize their own stories.

The responsibility for fact checking lies with the candidates

CBS announced on Friday that this would be the case up to the candidates to keep each other honest in Tuesday’s debate – a sticking point in previous debates this year.

In the June debate between Trump and Biden, CNN’s Jake Tapper and Dana Bash limited follow-up questions and no fact checking every participant. In the September debate between Trump and Harris, ABC’s David Muir and Linsey Davis subjected to factual corrections to some of Trump’s most egregious misrepresentations.

“That’s all,” said Jamernik. “That’s why we play hockey, to win games and win championships, and that’s another reason North Dakota is so special because we have a history of championships. We have the guys, I know we have what it takes, so I’m looking forward to it.”

Bangladesh 107 for 3 (Mominul 40*, Shanto 31, Akash Deep 2-34) vs India

For the second day in a row, there was no play in the second Test between India and Bangladesh in Kanpur. Unlike Saturday, there wasn’t a single drop of rain today, but a wet outfield resulted in the game being abandoned at 2 p.m. Ironically, as soon as the referees made this decision, the sun came out from behind the clouds.

After three days, Bangladesh are 107 for 3 in the first innings of the Test. There are still two days left but the chances of a result have drastically reduced.

The day began with the covers being removed from the outfield. An inspection was scheduled for 10 a.m. Soon after, the ground staff also removed the main cover and began marking the crease on both sides of the pitch.

But when the umpires came to inspect, they found that certain areas in the outfield, particularly in the middle of the field, in the middle and in the bowler’s run-up from the end of the media box, were too wet to begin play.

They scheduled the next inspection for midday. But things hardly improved, much to the frustration of fans who, as it was a Sunday, turned up in large numbers.

Meanwhile, the ground crew seemed to be relying solely on the sun to work its magic. Another inspection was scheduled for 2:00 p.m. when the referees decided it was done for the day.
