Unholy row as supermarket giant Tesco plans to open on a Sunday… in Stornoway

Unholy row as supermarket giant Tesco plans to open on a Sunday… in Stornoway

It is the last bastion of Sabbath celebrations in the United Kingdom.

But now a supermarket giant is planning to open its store in the Hebrides on Sundays, stoking the anger of the strict religious community.

So far, since opening its Stornoway branch in 2008, Tesco has respected the Lewis tradition of keeping shutters closed on closed days.

However, it is currently consulting with staff about working on the Sabbath, sparking outrage from religious leaders who say the tradition should not be wiped out.

The retailer is aiming to bring the Stornoway store in line with the rest of its UK operations, where stores are open seven days a week.

Gang wars: Supermarket giant Tesco hopes to open on a Sunday in the staunchly religious community of Stornoway

But Rev Kenneth Stewart, of the city’s Reformed Presbyterian Church, said Tesco should respect the Hebridean way of life, telling the Sunday Mail: “This is a place where the Lord’s Day has been celebrated in the past.”

“It is something that is deeply woven into the fabric of the place and the heritage of the people.” A feature of life here is that even those who are not devout Christians or churchgoers appreciate the specialness of the Lord’s Day.

“I just heard that the employees don’t want it.” As far as I know, there is general resistance among the employees.”

Pastor Stewart said he would make statements to the store about opening plans.

It is understood the proposals will be reviewed by a new manager at the store.

The local planning authority has said there are no restrictions on Tesco opening on Sundays and confirmed they have a seven-day license to sell alcohol.

Rev Greg MacDonald of the Free Church of Scotland (continued) added: “My view is please don’t open.” It’s quite simple. I am a minister and I believe that everyone not only benefits from a day that is different, but is also entitled to it. I know there will be resistance to this.’

Co-op, Stornoway’s other major supermarket, will also remain closed on Sundays, although some campaigners fear it could copy Tesco if their plans go ahead.

Torcuil Crichton, Labor MP for the Western Isles, said: “In the 24-hour world we live in, many appreciate the peace of Lewis on Sunday.”

Tesco headquarters did not respond when contacted for comment.

Islanders were in uproar in 2009 when ferry operator CalMac began its Sunday service between the mainland and Lewis.

Warning that this would lead to further erosion of Sabbath observance, protesters celebrated when the ship developed an engine problem before its first voyage, saying it was “an act of God” to ensure the day was holy stayed.

In 2018, church leaders rejected plans to open the cinema in Stornoway in a process that would see films shown on the big screen on the last Sunday of the month.

The initiative was so successful that the arts center behind the move continues to show blockbusters on weekends.

Mary Lou Retton’s Daughter McKenna Kelley Is Married (Exclusive)

Mary Lou Retton’s Daughter McKenna Kelley Is Married (Exclusive)

McKenna Kelley had her dream wedding day!

The gymnast and teacher, the daughter of Mary Lou Retton and Shannon Kelley, tied the knot with Braden Doughty on Saturday, September 28, in front of 150 guests at The Preserve at Canyon Lake in Texas.

For Kelley, the romantic location is “really the place of my bridal dreams,” she tells PEOPLE.

“It’s a beautiful, mansion-like venue in white with exposed beams, high ceilings and lots of windows overlooking a nature reserve,” she adds. “It’s the perfect canvas to capture our timeless, elegant theme.”

Decor at the couple’s celebration featured touches of stunning green and gold paired with opaque pink, cream and champagne florals by Cameron De Leon at The Petal Artist. Lush greenery draped the venue’s staircase, while a flower-filled ceremony cross and decorated mantel brought Kelley’s “floral wedding dreams to life,” she says.

Kelley, the second of Retton’s four daughters, added that she and Doughty first met when students at Louisiana State University were planning their wedding together. “We were very cooperative,” she says. “We both had suggestions and ideas that we could combine for our big day.”

For help with the finishing touches, the couple turned to Scarlet Rose Events and their coordinator Alexa Nagel, who “kept the weeks leading up to the wedding running smoothly by coordinating final schedules and meetings with vendors.” Alexa did a fantastic job with that ensured that I felt cared for and prepared for the wedding day. She was also the best hype girl!”

As she walked down the aisle to “Gratitude” by Brandon Lake, the bride wore Watters’ WToo Fortune gown from Liv & Love Bridal in San Antonio.

“I went in pretty open-minded,” she recalls. “But when I put the dress on, I knew it was the right one.” The simplicity appealed to me. I love the A-line silhouette and crepe texture of the top. It felt so flattering and I felt so confident. I added drop sleeves and viola! It was my dream Barbie wedding dress! This is the only time in my life I get to wear a wedding dress, I will cherish every second!”

Doughty wore a tailored State and Liberty athletic-fit stretch suit in hunter green, which he paired with a floral tie that included all the wedding colors. “The perfect fit for a fall wedding,” adds Kelley, whose hair and makeup was done by Ana Blanks and Kim Ramirez at Jax Studio.

Kelley’s bridesmaids wore champagne dresses from Show Me Your Mumu that they chose themselves. “It’s important to me that they feel beautiful and confident,” says Kelley.

Before reciting traditional vows, the couple enjoyed a private moment together and exchanged letters. “We don’t do a first look, so we’re going to do this without seeing each other,” Kelley explained before the ceremony. “We plan to stand on either side of a door or wall, hold hands and pray together.”

Following the wedding, the bride and groom enjoyed dinner and dancing at their reception. During cocktail hour, guests dined on bacon-wrapped chicken bites and brisket poppers in a nod to Kelley’s Texas roots, as well as margaritas and Jack Daniels cocktails.

Dinner from Jimmy Lyn’s Catering included a mixed green cranberry salad, followed by almond-crusted chicken with scalloped potatoes and garlic green beans. For dessert, the couple had a custom wedding cake from Lani Cammer, as well as cookie butter mousse and a pumpkin spice cheesecake dessert.

Before the wedding, Kelley said she wasn’t feeling stressed about the big day.

“Literally no worries. I was honestly so casual about the wedding process itself. I think the hardest part was moving to Louisiana while trying to figure out the details for a Texas wedding. My biggest fear is making sure I have everything I need packed and don’t lose it while traveling!”

Doughty directed the question to Kelley on January 20, 2024. “The proposal was absolutely perfect,” Kelley told PEOPLE at the time. “It was at a resort overlooking Braden’s favorite golf course. My whole family was there, including most of his,” she says. “It was the most magical day.”

It was easy to fall in love, says Kelley. “We were both athletes at LSU – he played baseball and I was a gymnast,” he explains. “I had always admired his open faith. I even remember saying, ‘I want to marry a man like that!’ Graduation and adult life later, and here we are!”

Braden Doughty and McKenna Kelley celebrate.

Just days before their “I do,” McKenna said they were looking forward to becoming husband and wife.

“I think we’re just so ready to get married. We have worked really hard to lay the foundation for this marriage in Christ and we are ready and excited to officially launch this union. We know that weddings require a lot of time, travel and money, and we are honored that people make these adjustments and sacrifices to celebrate us.”

Kelley and Doughty wrote each guest a heartfelt handwritten thank you card for attending their special celebration.

“Each of our guests has had a significant impact on our lives. “Without them we wouldn’t be the people we are today,” she says. “We wanted to remind them of their importance in our relationship and how grateful we are for each of them. Even though this wedding is about us, it wouldn’t be possible without them.”

“We would especially like to thank our parents for their love, support and encouragement throughout the entire process. Without them, this day wouldn’t be possible,” Kelley said. “Jennifer and Richard and Shannon and Mary Lou, thank you for everything! We love you.”

Cardinals take pay cuts, Pete Alonso is favorite, White Sox front-runner

Cardinals take pay cuts, Pete Alonso is favorite, White Sox front-runner

With the 2024 MLB season almost over, it’s worth taking a moment to reflect on everything that happened this season. We have seen history in all its forms and the competitive balance in the league has rarely been better. If you want proof of how wild and unpredictable this season has been, look no further than the absolute instance that will unfold in the NL Wild Card over the next few days.

We also have to look ahead to what is likely to be a chaotic winter. Juan Soto and Corbin Burnes are expected to grab most of the headlines in free agency, but some big names could move locations in the coming months.

The latest MLB rumors are flooding Bob Nightengale USA today gives us a good idea of what could happen this offseason. Here’s what needs your attention.

For more news and rumors, check out MLB Insider Robert Murray’s work The Baseball Insiders Podcastsubscribe The moonshotour weekly MLB newsletter and join the Discord to get the inside scoop leading up to the MLB offseason.

The Chicago White Sox fired Pedro Grifol in the midst of what was officially the worst season in MLB history, at least in terms of wins and losses. Not much has happened for Chicago this season. They couldn’t even trade their All-Star pitcher and borderline Cy Young candidate at the deadline because he sabotaged his own market.

Nevertheless, there is generally a positive mood surrounding Grady Sizemore as interim manager. A three-time All-Star coach, Sizemore feels like the manager the White Sox need. Young, hip and able to identify with the players in what will surely be a lengthy rebuilding process. There’s a very real chance things will get worse before they get better for the Sox. Therefore, the manager must be able to keep the dressing room intact even during severe dry spells.

Still, there’s a very real chance the White Sox move on from Sizemore in search of a more accomplished name. Not to oversimplify things, Carlos Beltran, who currently plays a supporting role with the New York Mets, has nine All-Stars on his resume compared to Sizemore’s three. Of course, that’s not a true indicator of his coaching ability, but Beltran is expected to interview for managerial positions this winter, according to reports USA today.

“It’s time for Carlos Beltran, a special assistant with the New York Mets, to begin receiving interviews from teams looking for a manager,” Nightengale writes. “He would be a good fit for the White Sox if they didn’t keep Grady Sizemore.”

In many ways, Beltran would mirror Sizemore as an accomplished former player. Whoever the White Sox hire, it’s important that they command the locker room with a strong voice that is respected by the players. Once the White Sox season ends in 2025, and it will, the locker room is at risk of falling apart. You need a manager to prevent that.

The Mets are expected to be at the forefront of free agents like Juan Soto and Corbin Burnes, which will complicate any efforts to retain Pete Alonso. The Polar Bear’s love for NYC is well documented and it’s safe to say he wants to return, but money is a choice. If the Mets withhold their resources elsewhere, it won’t be long before other teams come knocking.

In general, it’s unwise to give significant long-term money to hard-hitting first basemen with limited defensive value, especially if they’re on the wrong side of 30 (Alonso’s birthday is in December). However, Alonso has been one of the best hitters in baseball since his debut in 2019. A four-time All-Star, Alonso slashed .241/.330/.464 with 34 homers and 88 RBI over 597 ABs in his so-called “down” season. The Mets probably want him back, but if he’s too low on the priority list, other teams are lurking.

Accordingly USA todayRival executives believe Alonso will end up with the Seattle Mariners or Chicago Cubs, if not the Mets.

The financial aspect could get tricky, but Seattle was extremely aggressive in its pursuit of power at the trade deadline, acquiring Randy Arozarena and Justin Turner, among others. The Cubs, meanwhile, desperately need an offensive spark. Cody Bellinger has regressed from his recovery a year ago and the Isaac Paredes trade didn’t work out as expected.

Chicago would have to find a new positional home for Michael Busch assuming Alonso doesn’t take over the DH duties, but there are certain risks that are worth taking when a hitter of Alonso’s caliber is involved. The strikeouts will always be an issue, but when he rakes, Alonso can change the trajectory of a game with one hit.

In perhaps the most predictable twist ever, the St. Louis Cardinals are expected to include Sonny Gray in trade negotiations after a commendable debut season from the former All-Star. Gray was one of the few bright spots in a season marked by mediocrity in St. Louis. The veteran was expected to help get the Cards back into the postseason mix, but the rotation around him wasn’t nearly good enough.

Gray, who signed a three-year, $75 million contract last winter, has a full no-trade clause. Among the expected applicants per USA todayare the Cincinnati Reds, who could use Gray alongside Hunter Greene at the top of their rotation. That’s a scary thought for NL Central teams, so St. Louis may have to think twice about sending its veteran ace to a division rival.

This certainly wasn’t his best season, but Gray continued his 2023 Cy Young runner-up admirably. In 28 starts for St. Louis, Gray posted a 3.84 ERA and 1.01 WHIP and recorded 203 strikeouts in 166.1 innings pitched. That was just a hair below Gray’s best mark in the punch-out department of his career, and without the injuries he probably would have set his personal record. So while Gray allowed more runs than he did a season ago, hits, walks and base runners were all down and K’s were up. The point is: he can still bring it.

Gray’s no-trade clause gives him significant control over the situation. He can orient himself towards a real candidate or an ideal location. Cincinnati doesn’t make the most sense at first glance, but Gray spent three of his best years here. Elly De La Cruz is ultimately leaning towards an MVP campaign and the Reds will certainly be better in a victorious NL Central. Maybe with Gray on his guard, Cincy can start making noise again.

Michigan governor mobilizes Waukesha voters for Harris-Walz campaign

Political leaders are mobilizing Wisconsin residents to fight against abortion bans. “We need our reproductive rights so we can be safe,” said Laurel Marcinkus, a speaker at an event in Waukesha on Sunday. Marcinkus, of Kenosha, spoke as part of the Harris-Walz campaign’s Fighting for Reproductive Freedom Bus Tour. Marcinkus was pregnant last year and shared how difficult it was to get medical care after learning of a blood clot that led to early labor. “However, due to the legal issues and risks of litigation, two different doctors had to be consulted before I could receive treatment. That meant I continued to bleed for a whole day,” Marcinkus said. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer also spoke at Sunday’s event. According to the Harris-Walz campaign, Whitmer wants to show the potential impact if Donald Trump becomes president. Whitmer said that could include a nationwide ban on abortion and limited access to birth control. “It is important to us to create a path to prosperity for every American. We ensure that people are respected and protected by the law and that they have access to health care when they need it.” “Period,” Whitmer said. Whitmer rallied the crowd to encourage people to vote in November. “Will we have an economy where everyone can get ahead, or where decisions are made only to benefit the few who are already far ahead? You know, we need people who understand, who live lives like ours. And that’s Harris and “Walz,” Whitmer said. U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett also spoke at Sunday’s event.

McCAUGHEY: Harris’ presidency will provide sanctuary for gang members

McCAUGHEY: Harris’ presidency will provide sanctuary for gang members

Article content

From New York to Chicago and the Denver suburbs, migrant gangs hold up, rape and rob stores, run brothels next to elementary schools and threaten apartment dwellers with guns into taking over apartment buildings – all without fear of deportation. The gangs turn neighborhoods into hellholes.

The crazy “sanctuary” laws are to blame.

The word “refuge” sounds merciful. Don’t be fooled. It does not mean welcoming the oppressed. It actually prohibits police from sharing arrest information with Immigration and Customs Enforcement so that the agency can detain and deport illegals arrested for violent crimes.

Protective laws protect criminals from deportation. Eleven states and about 600 cities — mostly controlled by Democrats — have them. Because of these laws, migrant lawbreakers go through the revolving door justice system and are back on the streets to strike again.

Americans have a choice: Recently, presidential candidate Donald Trump promised to work with Congress to ban sanctuary jurisdiction.

The other choice is Vice President Kamala Harris. Although she appears to have taken a vow of silence about her political positions, her records show that San Franciscans died because of her immigration crime policies when she was the city’s district attorney.

In 2008, Edwin Ramos, an illegal from El Salvador, murdered a man and his two sons. Before the triple murder, Ramos had a history of juvenile arrests for assault and attempted robbery. Had San Francisco police cooperated with federal immigration authorities, Ramos might have been deported instead of being released to kill.

The situation is similar with Rony Aguilera, an illegal from Honduras who murdered Ivan Miranda. He had already experienced several run-ins with police, but he was still in San Francisco and ready to kill.

Advertising 4

Article content

A New York Times The report, published on September 22, claims that “Harris cracked down on violent offenders” but conveniently omits any mention of Ramos, Aguilera and their victims.

As a U.S. senator in 2017, Harris voted against a bill to increase penalties for criminals who repeatedly enter the country illegally and commit additional crimes after being deported.

Then, in 2019, as Harris launched her first campaign for president, she filled out an American Civil Liberties Union questionnaire declaring that local law enforcement “should not act as federal immigration agents.”

She also wrote that as attorney general, she told California law enforcement that they “did not have to comply with ICE detainers,” meaning they could ignore federal requests to hold suspected migrants for deportation.

Advertising 5

Article content

The same measures are now causing migrant crime to explode. Seven Colorado counties in the clutches of the Venezuelan prison gang Tren de Aragua are suing to overturn sanctuary laws that prevent local police from working with ICE to send gang members away.

New York’s sanctuary laws have allowed the same Venezuelan gang to set up headquarters in refugee shelters across the five boroughs and terrorize the public without fear of deportation.

Crime victims can thank their bright politicians.

Mayor Eric Adams has called for a change to city laws. But the left-wing extremist city council doesn’t budge.

On September 20, Republicans in the House of Representatives introduced a bill to withhold federal aid to migrants from refuge areas.

Advertising 6

Article content

Outrageously, Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) opposed it, claiming it would “scapegoat immigrants.” This is partisan talk. Police estimate that up to 75% of arrests for assault and robbery in midtown Manhattan — Nadler’s district — are recently arrived migrants.

Trump has promised to “hunt down and capture every single gang member held illegally.” A big task, but the start is to enable local police to cooperate with ICE.

The protected area laws must be repealed.

Trump tried an executive order in 2017, cutting funding for sanctuary courts, but faced a series of legal challenges from blue state politicians and a ruling from the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals that held that only Congress, not the president, can set conditions on how to do so Federal money will be spent. If Trump wins in November, he wants to avoid legal hurdles by asking Congress for help. The election will determine whether this strategy can be successful.

One thing is certain: If Harris wins, the gangs win too. As border tsarina she let them in and as president she protected them from deportation.

Under a Harris presidency, plan to lock your doors, keep your wallets safe and remain vigilant as you walk through your neighborhood — until it is no longer walkable.

Betsy McCaughey is a former lieutenant governor of New York

What is the best playoff lineup the Philadelphia Phillies can field in the NLDS?

What is the best playoff lineup the Philadelphia Phillies can field in the NLDS?

The Philadelphia Phillies enter the 2024 playoffs with one of the deeper lineups of any postseason team.

This has been a key part of their success this season, and they enter Saturday’s game with a combined OPS of .752, ranking fourth in the MLB.

However, the way manager Rob Thomson has deployed the lineup may not be the optimal design.

With every run counting even more in October, how should the Phillies put together their lineup for postseason play?

Kyle Schwarber’s leadership is the best way to maximize his abilities.

He leads the team with a walk rate of 15.2 percent, which also ranks him third in the MLB.

This is the guy you want at the top of your lineup; The guy who can work counts, gets on base more often than most while also hitting for an immense amount of power.

Schwarber set the major league record for leadoff home runs this season and has 38 total with two games left to play.

Schwarber at the top of the lineup creates good conditions for the rest of the strong offense to do more damage.

With an optimal lineup setup, your best all-around hitter will bat second, behind the player who gets on base most often.

Bryce Harper is undoubtedly Philadelphia’s best all-around hitter.

Harper enters Saturday’s game with a .286/.374/.527 line on the year with 72 extra-base hits, 87 RBI and an OPS+ of 150 and will once again be ranked in the top 10 for National MVP voting League, an award to be won he has won twice so far.

Harper brings power and contact to the lineup and would see more plate appearances one spot higher in the lineup than he did in the regular season.

If you’re still with me, perfect.

Alec Bohm was the club’s leading contact and gap-to-gap hitter this season with 44 doubles and two triples.

He has only had 85 strikeouts, for a strikeout rate of 14.2 percent, a career high and well below league average.

Bohm batting behind Schwarber and Harper, assuming Harper doesn’t rush Schwarber, gives the young third baseman the opportunity to drive in multiple runners, something he has surpassed with 95 RBI this year.

Bohm has developed into the perfect hitter needed to play third in a lineup, now he just needs to be put there.

Don’t worry, Trea Turner stans, he’s coming.

Nick Castellanos is the best remaining power hitter, with Schwarber and Harper already firmly entrenched in the first and second spots.

He ranks third on the Phillies in ISO with .174 and third in home runs with 23.

Even in baseball’s new age of analysis and statistical evidence for the perfect lineup construction, the fourth spot still requires power, and Castellanos is the best remaining option in that regard.

After finishing fourth in the lineup, you start over and do it again.

The remaining player with the best walk rate is second baseman Bryson Stott at 9.4 percent.

While he does a good job of getting on base, he is another member of Philadelphia’s roster with fewer than 100 strikeouts this year, coming in at 92.

Stott is one of the better players in the sport at putting the bat on the ball, and it’s very rare for the left-hander to swing and miss.

Stott gets on base with a walk or at least puts the ball in play, setting up the rest of the lineup well.

With a lineup so deep that Trea Turner is ranked sixth should Being the norm is a fantastic luxury.

Batting Turner second in the lineup this season has done more harm than good to the team, and his skill set is much better suited to the sixth spot in the lineup.

Turner is fast, but in his 30s his speed begins to decline.

He still put together a solid season with a .294/.337/.465 line, 45 extra-base hits, 60 RBI and a 123 OPS+.

Batting Turner sixth would go a long way toward giving this team more wins.

One of the few players in the everyday lineup who hit at his optimal position in the lineup, the best catcher in baseball, JT Realmuto.

In an optimal setup, seventh place works just like third, but slightly worse.

Realmuto has less gap-to-gap ability than Bohm, making him the perfect choice for the shot here.

Realmuto, who enters Saturday’s game with 18 doubles and a triple in just 98 games, would be much closer to 30 doubles if he hadn’t done that Mid-season knee surgery.

“Wait, left field?” Yes.

An every-day lineup is a lineup that features right-handed pitchers every day.

As much as Thomson wants to force Austin Hays into an everyday role, he’s not cut out for it.

Brandon Marsh, on the other hand, does.

Marsh enters Saturday’s game with a season line of .252/.333/.425 with 16 home runs, 60 RBI and an OPS+ of 111.

He sacrificed batting average for more power, but in 2024 batting average no longer matters.

He ranks fourth on the team in ISO at .172, just behind Castellanos, making him the perfect second cleanup hitter.

Here’s the thing: Johan Rojas is by far the worst hitter on the team.

But what Rojas brings is elite speed and one of the best center field gloves in all of baseball.

These two things more than make up for what he lacks on the plate and make every production he makes icing on the cake.

His speed allows him to hit weak groundballs for infield hits more than most, putting him in the “second leadoff hitter” class.

The Phillies were one of the best teams in baseball this year, but if they had constructed their roster better, 100 wins would have been an easy feat.

Doing this in the playoffs would significantly increase their chances of making the World Series.

Three teams ranked way too high at the start of week six and three teams ranked way too low

Three teams ranked way too high at the start of week six and three teams ranked way too low

The latest AP Top 25 poll is here! As week six begins, we are now fully in conference play. Cupcakes will no longer be prevalent in these teams’ schedules. The good news is that conference wins mean more. The bad news is that anyone can beat anyone in league play. We saw that last weekend when unranked Kentucky handed previously unbeaten Ole Miss its first loss of the season.

While the Associated Press gets more and more right every week, even as the same handful of people keep giving multiple first-place votes to an undeserving Ohio State team, we have to make do with what those 60 or so voters decide each week. Over time, we will conduct a more detailed survey once the College Football Playoff Selection Committee meets for the first time in about a month.

Here’s what the Associated Press has identified as the 25 best teams in college football for Week 6.

  1. Alabama Crimson Tide (4-0) (1,549 points, 40 first-place finishes)
  2. Texas Longhorns (5-0) (1,525 points, 19 first place finishes)
  3. Ohio State Buckeyes (4-0) (1,445 points, 4 first-place finishes)
  4. Tennessee Volunteers (4-0) (1,356 points)
  5. Georgia Bulldogs (3-1) (1,329 points)
  6. Oregon Ducks (4-0) (1,216 points)
  7. Penn State Nittany Lions (4-0) (1,208 points)
  8. Miami Hurricanes (5-0) (1,170 points)
  9. Missouri Tigers (4-0) (1,085 points)
  10. Michigan Wolverines (4-1) (913 points)
  11. USC Trojans (3-1) (854 points)
  12. Ole Miss Rebels (4-1) (799 points)
  13. LSU Tigers (4-1) (757 points)
  14. Notre Dame fights against Irish (4-1) (748 points)
  15. Clemson Tigers (3-1) (694 points)
  16. Cyclones in the state of Iowa (4-0) (656 points)
  17. BYU Cougars (5-0) (549 points)
  18. Utah Utes (4-1) (467 points)
  19. Oklahoma Sooners (4-1) (428 points)
  20. Kansas State Wildcats (4-1) (398 points)
  21. Boise State Broncos (3-1) (253 points)
  22. Louisville Cardinals (3-1) (223 points)
  23. Indiana Hoosiers (5-0) (172 points)
  24. Illinois battles Illinois (4-1) (169 points)
  25. UNLV Rebels (4-0) (122 points)

And here’s every other team that received at least one vote from the Associated Press this week.

Let’s unpack three teams that were over-ranked this week, as well as three that were under-ranked.

Given time, the Oregon Ducks could prove to me that they are one of the best teams in college football. Admittedly, I have them firmly in the playoff mix this week. I would see them as the No. 9 seed in the playoff picture if the season ended today. Even though the Ducks are undefeated, they need to show me more than what they need to get closer to a top-five finish. However, I respect Boise State’s win.

The good news for the Ducks is that they were still able to win games even though they haven’t played what we think is their best brand of football. The bad news is that I don’t know if they will be given the benefit of the doubt if they suffer a serious loss. If this team goes at least 10-2, the Ducks will make the playoffs. Right now, I would leave at least two teams behind in the current AP Top 25.

Oregon is definitely a top 10 team in the country, but I’m not sure it’s a top 5 team yet.

I called here earlier in the off season. Indiana is more than sneaky good; The Hoosiers just might be good. The signing of Curt Cignetti from James Madison has breathed new life into the Indiana offense the likes of which we haven’t seen since Kalen DeBoer or even Nick Sheridan in Bloomington. This team played hard for years under Cignetti’s predecessor, Tom Allen, but became so weak offensively.

There will be at least three Big Ten teams making the playoffs, possibly four and maybe even five if the SEC cannibalizes itself. Who will emerge at No. 4 after Ohio State, Oregon and Penn State? It could be Michigan, it could be USC, it could be Illinois, possibly Nebraska, but what about Indiana? This is a team that many have picked to win just a few games. Now they’re just one win away from a bowl.

We were late to the Indiana party, but I think it’s worth sticking around.

Missouri benefited from not playing this week to move up in the rankings. I reluctantly put the Tigers in the College Football Playoff every week. Just like Oregon in the Big Ten, we’re still waiting for the Tigers to really show us what they’re worth. We know they are well coached under Eliah Drinkwitz. The problem lies outside of Luther Burden III, I don’t trust their offense at all.

Texas A&M could be a big test for them this week, but aside from the Alabama game later in the season, Missouri doesn’t have the schedule to handle a bad loss. Like every SEC team, they will come into the game with a record of 12-0 or 11-1. I worry that they may not have the runway to really take off with a 10-2 mark. On the other hand, Mizzou thrives on being overlooked. They should elaborate on this further.

I have no problem with Missouri getting into the playoffs, but a loss would eliminate them very quickly.

After Utah lost to Arizona in Week 5, I have a new favorite to win the Big 12. Hey, Rocco! I have your Iowa State Cyclones coming! Not only is this team well-coached under Matt Campbell, it also has a quarterback who is cause for celebration every week. He gets better with every start. This team plays calmly and confidently, but you can’t discount the Cyclones.

At some point we will find out who the best team in the Big 12 is. It could be Iowa State, it could be BYU, it could be Kansas State, it could be anyone! For the first five weeks, I didn’t feel confident about who I put at No. 4 as the Big 12’s de facto winner. In time, it may no longer be Iowa State, but for now I have no problem placing them at No. 4 for this week.

The winner of the Big 12 will likely lose in the national quarterfinals, but they will get there.

Maybe my personal bias is coming through here, but I don’t care. I was honestly shocked that Georgia fell just three spots after their seven-point road loss at Alabama. Although the Dawgs orchestrated the comeback admirably and briefly held the lead, I watched the first film and know what I saw. This is a good team, but not a great one. I think Georgia deserves to be docked a little more.

I had the Dawgs ranked No. 7 this week, which would actually be No. 5 if not for the projected ACC and Big 12 winners. Georgia is undeniably better than Iowa State, but are they definitely better than Miami? Probably, but there are a handful of undefeated teams that I think are absolutely livid that Georgia is still looking up in the rankings after experiencing the crash for the first time.

This is one of those weeks where I’m glad I don’t have to finish in the top 25 in the AP poll.

For whatever reason, the close matchup against Bowling Green is still against Penn State. I don’t care about the Falcons’ record; These guys play hard for Scot Loeffler. As for James Franklin’s Penn State Nittany Lions, they’re pretty much a playoff team at this point. Like clockwork, they’ll probably go 10-2. However, I think there is a chance they are the second best team in the Big Ten after Ohio State.

At some point we will have to ask ourselves who is better between Oregon and Penn State. I’d lean on the latter based on what I’ve seen so far. While they may not compete against each other this season, I would love to see what they do against each other. Both teams will likely make the playoffs, but I would pick the Nittany Lions over the Ducks in early October.

I love what this Penn State team is definitely capable of as they finally start to figure it out
