The killing of Nasrallah is an important prize for Israel, but it is still too early to write off Hezbollah

The killing of Nasrallah is an important prize for Israel, but it is still too early to write off Hezbollah

CNN

On Saturday, Hezbollah confirmed that its leader Hassan Nasrallah was dead after Israel announced that he had been killed in an airstrike in Beirut on Friday.

His death marks an important moment in the recent history of the Middle East, but the long-term consequences are uncertain. It raises a key question: Do “beheading attacks” that kill the leaders of terrorist groups cripple them? The short answer is not really.

Israel should know from its own history that such attacks do not always result in the disabling of a militant group. In 2008, Israel killed Hezbollah military leader Imad Mughniyeh in Damascus, Syria, but the group only gained strength in the following years.

Four years earlier, Israel killed Hamas founder Sheikh Ahmed Yassin in an airstrike. Yet the group did not collapse and, nearly two decades later, still carried out the October 7 attacks in Israel, which killed about 1,200 Israelis in a single day.

Most recently, in July, Israel said it had killed one of the October 7 masterminds, Mohammed Deif, a key Hamas military commander, but the militant group continues to fight in Gaza.

The United States has a history of killing terrorist leaders in the hope of crippling its enemies. When Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq, was killed in a US bombing raid in 2006, it was considered a major breakthrough because al-Qaeda in Iraq contributed significantly to the civil war that was then shaking the country apart.

But eight years later, al-Qaeda in Iraq eventually morphed into ISIS, which occupied an area the size of Portugal and ruled over a population of about eight million people in Iraq and Syria. IS also carried out devastating terrorist attacks in the West, for example in Paris in 2015, in which 130 people were killed.

What actually ended ISIS’s geographical “caliphate” was not an attack on its leadership, but a ground campaign against the terrorist army from 2014 to 2019, led by the Iraqi military and Syrian Kurdish forces, and by thousands of US troops and significant American air assets was supported. The IS base, Mosul, the second largest city in Iraq, was largely destroyed in this war.

In May 2016, then-President Barack Obama authorized a drone strike in Pakistan that killed the Taliban’s supreme leader, Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Mansour. But today the Taliban control all of Afghanistan.

Then-President Donald Trump ordered an attack in Baghdad, Iraq, in early January 2020 that killed Qasem Soleimani, the commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force who was responsible for Iran’s relations with its proxy forces in the region such as Hezbollah , Hamas, the Houthis in Yemen and Shiite militias in Iraq.

After Soleimani was killed, Trump said: “Soleimani planned imminent and sinister attacks on American diplomats and military personnel, but we caught him in the act and killed him.”

Still, his death had no lasting impact on Iran’s power and ambitions in the region, and Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis in Yemen continued their attacks on Israeli targets, and Shiite militias continued their attacks on American targets in Iraq.

The US has classified the Taliban, Houthis, Hamas, ISIS and Hezbollah as terrorist groups.

What can cripple a terrorist group is a sustained campaign aimed at eliminating as many of its leaders and middle managers as possible. A CIA drone campaign that expanded into Pakistan’s tribal regions bordering Afghanistan in 2008 killed many al-Qaeda leaders, according to New America, a research organization (of which I am vice president).

Documents recovered from the U.S. Navy SEALs who killed Osama bin Laden at his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, in 2011 show that the al-Qaeda leader regularly wrote to his followers living in the country’s tribal regions, urging them to to move only on cloudy days when the… Drones were less effective. As a result, bin Laden planned to withdraw all of his followers from the tribal region and relocate them to other parts of Pakistan.

Bin Laden’s death certainly did much to undermine al-Qaeda’s appeal to terrorists and its ability to carry out attacks, since it was bin Laden who founded the group, led its deadliest operations and united members of the group had sworn a personal oath of loyalty to him.

Bin Laden’s successor, Ayman al-Zawahiri, had neither the charisma nor organizational skills to revive al-Qaeda, and Zawahiri himself was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Afghanistan two years ago. According to United Nations estimates, there are approximately four hundred al-Qaeda members living in Afghanistan today.

While al-Qaeda is a relatively small terrorist group, Hezbollah has existed for four decades and is backed by Iran, which is a major player in the region and has an army of about 30,000 soldiers that has an extensive arsenal, including about 150,000 rockets , feature and rockets.

The killing of Nasrallah is a major prize for Israel as part of its larger wave of attacks on Hezbollah, which began earlier this month with the covert operation in which thousands of pagers and walkie-talkies exploded, followed by massive airstrikes, damaging infrastructure and other high-profile targets Leaders destroyed, intensified.

But it is still too early to dismiss the militant group, although it is clearly in disarray. History suggests that it will reorganize and appoint other leaders to continue its long struggle against Israel.

The Edmonton Oilers end their preseason with a win over the Seattle Kraken

The Edmonton Oilers end their preseason with a win over the Seattle Kraken

EDMONTON – Mattias Ekholm had a goal and two assists as the Edmonton Oilers ended a three-game losing streak with a 5-4 victory over the Seattle Kraken on Saturday.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Noah Philp, Vasily Podkolzin and Raphael Lavoie also scored for the Oilers, who improved to 2-3 in the NHL preseason.

Jacob Melanson, Eduard Sale, John Hayden and Ben Meyers responded for the Kraken, which fell to 1-3 in exhibition action.

A little over three minutes into the opening period, the Oilers started scoring when both defensemen tried to cover Connor McDavid on a two-on-one, but he made a nice backhand pass back to Nugent-Hopkins, who beat Kraken goalie Philipp Grubauer in the top blocker defeated side.

Seattle tied the game nine minutes into the first after Oilers goaltender Calvin Pickard made a few close-range saves before Melanson was able to push the ball in from the goal crease.

Pickard left the game shortly afterwards after his teammate Noah Philp ran into his own goalkeeper and hit him in the head. Pickard did not return to the game.

Olivier Rodrigue replaced Pickard in the Edmonton net and scored a power-play goal with six minutes left in the first game when Ryan Winterton delivered a deft pass over a defender to Sale for the goal.

Edmonton tied the game with 2:43 left in the first frame when Ekholm saw Philp hit the net and complete a long saucer pass through a couple of Kraken players so he could shoot the ball into the goal.

Seattle made it 3-2 at 5:32 of the second period after Rodrigue tried to deflect a puck away from the net, but it hit Hayden and fired into his net.

With two minutes left in the middle period, the Kraken extended their lead when Meyers decided to take advantage of a two-on-one opportunity and beat the Oilers goalie up top.

Edmonton got the goal back just 26 seconds later when Derek Ryan directed the ball to a trailing Ekholm and beat Grubauer to make it 4-3.

The Oilers tied the game on a shorthanded score six minutes into the third when Ryan made a great play to lure defenders his way before handing the ball off to Podkolzin, who easily inbounded it.

Edmonton avoided overtime with 2:53 left in the final frame when Lavoie fought hard to get the puck back before swinging forward and sending a shot through Grubauer’s legs for his second goal of the preseason.

NOTES

The Oilers still had 41 players in camp – four of them goaltenders, 13 defensemen and 24 forwards. … Seattle had just 37 players left in camp — 33 skaters and four goaltenders — after cutting eight players before Friday’s game against Vancouver. … Edmonton had both players in camp Saturday who are on PTOs, forward Mike Hoffman and defenseman Travis Dermott. … Grubauer made his first appearance since last Sunday’s 6-1 loss to Calgary, in which he allowed four goals on 19 shots.

NEXT

Kraken: Visit the Calgary Flames on Monday.

Oilers: Host the Vancouver Canucks on Monday.

Maya Rudolph returns as Kamala Harris in the premiere cold open of “SNL” Season 50 with Dana Carvey and Jim Gaffigan

Maya Rudolph returns as Kamala Harris in the premiere cold open of “SNL” Season 50 with Dana Carvey and Jim Gaffigan

Mamala is back!

Maya Rudolph returned to the “Saturday Night Live” stage to reprise her Emmy-winning role as Vice President Kamala Harris for the milestone premiere of the show’s 50th season.

“Well, your funny aunt has returned,” said Rudolph.

The comedian, 52, appeared on Saturday, September 29, as the Democratic presidential candidate, 59, in a hilarious skit with Andrew Dismukes and Jim Gaffigan, who portrayed ABC anchor David Muir and Harris’ running mate Tim Walz, respectively.

“SNL” alum Dana Carvey also made a triumphant return to 30 Rock to play President Joe Biden for the first time in nearly eight years.

Andy Samberg starred as Harris’ husband Douglas Emhoff.

James Austin Johnson reprized his role as Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, while Bowen Yang starred in his portrayal of JD Vance.

Rudolph was a cast member on “SNL” from 2000 to 2007. She first played Harris in a September 28, 2019 episode for the NBC sketch comedy that parodied the Democratic primary debate, alongside host Woody Harrelson as Joe Biden, Larry David as Bernie Sanders, Kate McKinnon as Elizabeth Warren and Bowen Yang as Andrew Yang.

The Bridesmaids actress’ portrayal of Harris became an instant hit, earning her a 2020 Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series. The imitation even won Kamala’s heart.

“That girl played by @MayaRudolph on @nbcsnl? That girl was me,” the then-California senator posted after the debut on X, formerly Twitter.

She returned to “SNL” a few times to play the vice president – also known as “Funt”, America’s funny aunt – after the 2020 election, alongside Jim Carrey, who took over the role of Joe Biden in October 2020, including during her moderation work in March 2021, which earned her another Emmy as Guest Actress in a Comedy Series.

This won’t be the last time we see Rudolph as Harris on “SNL” either.

According to Deadline, the star is set to play Harris in several episodes of Lorne Michael’s late-night comedy program in the run-up to November’s presidential election, altering her schedule.

In July, sources told the network that Rudolph had paused production on the third season of her Apple TV+ comedy series “Loot” was scheduled to shoot on August 26th due to scheduling reasons. The show is reportedly set to resume production in January 2025.

“SNL” fans begged for Rudolph’s return after President Biden dropped out of the race on July 21, but her comeback wasn’t guaranteed.

During an August appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” with RuPaul filling in for Kimmel, Rudolph revealed that no one had contacted her from the show.

“Will we see Kamala on ‘SNL’ soon?” RuPaul asked.

“It’s interesting that you brought that up,” Rudolph replied, “because no one asked me.”

She was eager to play Harris again, but was confused when headlines broke about her return.

“I have never experienced anything like this in any of my previous work. “It’s been an incredible, exciting time for me that feels so much bigger than myself or anything I’ve ever done,” she said on the late-night talk show.

“I’ve played her on the show before, but the moment it was announced that she was going on, I think I was at home watching ‘The Bear’ and it was announced that I was I agreed to be on ‘SNL.’ I was like, ‘What have I done?’ Everyone’s just ready for it!”

Rudolph acknowledged how special it would be to bring the imitation back to Rockefeller Center.

“I spent so many years on ‘SNL’ watching other people play presidential candidates and thinking that there was no one else in the race who looked like me. To think that we are here now and that I would ever be close is incredible,” she told RuPaul.

Rudolph ended her interview on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” by teasing her “SNL” comeback, telling the studio audience, “I mean, I don’t know. We’ll see!”

On Friday, September 27, Rudolph appeared as herself in a promo for SNL’s 50th season. She didn’t mention Harris, but brought up a Southern accent, a possible reference to the memes criticizing the presidential candidate’s accent at certain rallies, and teased: “Rumor has it there’s a very special guest coming to these parts this week. “, which led many to assume she would reprise the role.

  • Over/Under (O/U): 11.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Dodgers at Rockies tips and predictions

forecast

Dodgers 8, Rockies 4

Money line

HAPPEN.

The Dodgers (-190) are trying to secure the top seed in the playoffs. They will win this game against the vastly inferior Rockies.

Running Line/Against the Spread

Betting cheats -1.5 (-130).

The Dodgers are battling the Phillies for the top spot in the playoffs, and with just a one-game lead, every win counts. They want to secure home-field advantage, and the Rockies aren’t exactly standing in their way.

LA has dominated the Rockies this season and Quantrill has had a lot of trouble against it. He is 0-2 with a 6.43 ERA in his 3 starts against the Dodgers. With Colorado having nothing left to play for, covering them seems like an easy task for the Dodgers.

Over/Under

HAPPEN.

It’s probably best to refrain from betting the total amount. Sure, 11.5 runs at Coors Field makes sense given the altitude, but that’s still a pretty high number. The Under has actually cashed five times in the last 10 meetings, so it’s not a guaranteed slugfest.

The Dodgers should have no problem scoring Quantrill, but I’m not confident the Rockies will contribute enough to reach that total. I would play it safe and stick with the run line instead of taking a risk on the over/under.

The Galaxy Ring could soon have a new competitor. | Photo credit: Samsung

The smart ring category is hot right now, but is Apple ready to get in on the action on its own?

In the last few months we’ve seen the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Ring and the RingConn Smart Ring, while the Oura Ring (now in its third generation) is the long-standing frontrunner in the race for the best smart rings. Rumors that Apple might be tempted to join the party have been circulating for a few years now, and it appears that Apple is at least somewhat in the planning stages of this form factor.

Here we have compiled everything we know and think we know about the so-called Apple Ring: the leaks and rumors that have surfaced, the predicted price, the possible release date and more. We’ve also added some of the features and specs we’d like to see from the Apple Ring.

Apple Ring: in a nutshell

  • What is that? A supposed smart ring made by Apple

  • When might it appear? TBC, but not before 2025

  • How much could it cost? Expect to pay $399 / £399 / AU$750 or more

Apple Ring: price and release date predictions

Oura Ring 3 on a fingerOura Ring 3 on a finger

Oura Ring 3 on a finger

We don’t have much indication of how much the Apple Ring might cost, but we can take a look at some of the other options on the market. The Samsung Galaxy Ring is available for $399 / £399 and up (Australian pricing is yet to be confirmed), while the Oura Ring 3 is available for $299 / £299 and up (and is not currently available in Australia).

That gives you an idea of the price points we’re talking about. Apple wants to stay competitive, but (as its best iPhones show) it’s not afraid to put a price premium on its products. If we had to guess, we’d say the Apple Ring will be slightly more expensive than its competitors from Samsung and Oura.

Also keep in mind that the best Oura Ring features require a monthly subscription ($5.99 / £5.99 per month). Apple already has the Fitness Plus program that you can sign up for if you own an Apple Watch ($9.99 / £9.99 / AU$14.99 per month). Therefore, it is quite possible that this is also an optional extra for the smart ring.

When it comes to a release date, 2024 and even 2025 seem unlikely given the frequency of leaks and rumors we’ve seen so far; It doesn’t appear that a launch is imminent. We didn’t see an Apple Ring alongside the Apple Watch 10 at the It’s Glowtime event in September 2024, but there’s a chance it could join the Apple Watch 11 in September 2025 if the device shows up as expected.

Apple Ring: Leaks and Rumors

Someone holds the Ringconn Smart Ring against a concrete background.

The Apple Ring rumors go back a long way, at least to 2020. A patent filed by Apple this year showed that a smart ring would be used to control other devices – with the idea that you could potentially control the channels on your Apple TV could switch by tapping your ring. Of course, patents aren’t always a guarantee of future products, but they show what companies are thinking about and researching.

In 2023, Apple again filed smart ring patents that positioned its potential device as a type of controller for other devices. It seems that each Apple Ring that appears will not only focus on health and fitness, but will also give you new ways to control features on your other Apple devices.

It seems that Apple isn’t limiting itself to finger-mounted wearables either. Another patent from 2023 revealed plans for a type of apple anklet that could be worn around the ankle or around the neck. The success of the Apple Watch is obviously causing Apple to think about how you can track more fitness metrics.

Meanwhile, an industry report out of South Korea suggested in early 2024 that an Apple smart ring was on the way to take on the likes of Samsung and Oura. However, since nothing has emerged in the past few months, either the report’s sources were mistaken or Apple has changed its mind about the future product launch schedule.

We saw another sign that an Apple Ring could be on the way: an Apple survey sent to Apple Watch owners asking how many of them currently wear a smart ring alongside their smartwatch. It may be a bit of a stretch to use this as evidence of an Apple Ring, but it’s not nothing.

And that’s it for the Apple Ring rumors – no hint of pricing, specs, design or anything like that. The lack of details in the rumors suggests that a release could still be some way off, although there was enough excitement at this point to suggest that it is at least being considered.

Apple Ring: What we want to see

If an Apple Ring is indeed on the way, what will it look like – and how might it beat existing models? If Apple engineers are reading this, here’s what we want from an Apple Smart Ring.

1. Excellent battery life

Of course, this shows up on every wish list for every device, but decent battery life is a must – especially since the standard Apple Watch won’t last more than a day or two without a charge. In fact, that could be a major selling point for the Apple Ring: continue to track your steps and other activities while your Apple Watch is charging.

2. Premium sleep tracking

Speaking of charging the Apple Watch, many users charge their watch overnight. This means that the smartwatch often cannot be used for sleep tracking, and we hope the Apple Ring can do this very well. In addition, due to its smaller size and lighter weight, a smart ring is better suited for tracking movements while you sleep.

3. Lots of software features without a subscription

We’ve already mentioned Apple Fitness Plus, but we hope that many of the features of an Apple Ring are available without a subscription – like with the Apple Watch. And for those who want additional features like fitness videos, workout plan customizations, in-session metrics, and more, there could be an additional subscription option.

4. A superior design

There are really only so many ways to design a smart ring, but we hope Apple gives the Apple Ring the same aesthetic flavor as shown on the iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. We’re thinking about a super slim and super light form factor, a choice of different colors and a smart ring that is one of the most comfortable on the market.

5. Seamless integration of the Apple ecosystem

Apple usually does this perfectly, with iPhones, iPads, Macs and Apple Watches constantly getting new integrations and connections – so we’re hoping this extends to Apple Ring too. It’s unlikely that Apple wants the Smart Ring to replace the Apple Watch, and in fact it could be a useful screen for it (remember, Oura also has an Apple Watch app).

No. 17 Clemson wore down Stanford with 5 TDs from Cade Klubnik and 3 takeaways from the defense in a 40-14 win

CLEMSON, South Carolina – When Clemson’s offense struggled to score points early on, cornerback Avieon Terrell shrugged and told them not to worry.

“We got you,” he said to his offensive teammates. No. 17 Clemson’s defense certainly came through with three interceptions and three fourth-down stops in a 40-14 win over Stanford on Saturday night.

“We’re confident,” said Terrell, who had one of the first picks in the end zone to stop a Cardinal drive. “We’re not too worried.”

Cade Klubnik threw four touchdowns and ran for another to continue his hot streak that has seen him account for 16 touchdowns (12 passing, four rushing) in the Tigers’ last three wins (3-1, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference). was.

The win was the 173rd for coach Dabo Swinney, who tied Florida State’s late national championship coach Bobby Bowden for the most coaching wins with an ACC school.

And unlike Clemson’s wins in its last two games, the defense led the way.

“It’s great to see these guys do what they did,” Klubnik said.

The Tigers stopped the Cardinal (2-2, 1-1) three times inside the Clemson 20, two on interceptions and the final time when safety RJ Mickens forced Emmett Mosley V out of the field on fourth and fifth from the Clemson 10 have only gained 20-7.

Clemson’s defense stopped the Cardinal on downs three times despite giving up 361 yards, including 236 rushing yards.

The Tigers held Stanford to 71 yards through three quarters, with quarterback Ashton Daniels completing just 9 of 19 before he was helped off the field in the fourth quarter after Clemson stopped him short on fourth-and-1.

Stanford coach Troy Taylor said it was too early to know Daniels’ status.

Moments later, Klubnik tied the score with his final pass, a 34-yard throw to dynamic freshman Bryant Wesco Jr., giving them a 33-7 lead.

The game took place a day after Hurricane Helene hit the Southeast, including South Carolina. The storm was responsible for at least 56 deaths and left millions of people without power, including many areas near the Clemson campus. That also delayed Stanford’s arrival in the area until Friday, about 25 hours before kickoff.

Clemson appeared to get off to a fast start again when it forced a fumble on Stanford’s first drive and Klubnik scored a 34-yard TD.

But the Cardinal did what Appalachian State and NC State couldn’t: He pushed the Tigers’ defense to the limit when it mattered most. However, Clemson was unable to break as both drives inside the red zone ended in an interception by Daniels, the first in the end zone by Terrell and the other inside the 10 by Jeadyn Lukus.

The Clemson offense, which played near-perfect football in overwhelming wins against the Mountaineers and Wolfpack, wasn’t as sharp against Stanford.

Klubnik threw his first interception in three games since a 34-3 loss to then-top-ranked Georgia in the opening game and completed 15 of 31 passes for 255 yards.

Stanford’s Taylor said the team missed early chances to keep things close.

“This is a great football team we just played against. We were able to stay with them for a while. Just too many mistakes,” he said.
