Vice President Kamala Harris has reportedly arranged for a banner trolling former President Trump to hang over Bryant-Denny Stadium, where he is expected to perform on Saturday SEC showdown between No. 2 Georgia and fourth-ranked Alabama.

The Harris Campaign plans to run a new ad during the game alerting Trump to the prospect of a second presidential debate, The Associated Press reported. According to other reports, she is also planning a flyover in Tuscaloosa.

As The Washington Post reported Saturday, a plane with a message reading “Trump’s Punting in Second Debate” is expected to fly over the stadium during the primetime game.

The game, a rematch of last season’s Southeastern Conference championship, is one of the must-watch games of the college football season.

Former President Trump has declared that he will not participate in a third debate after claiming victory with Harris in this month’s debate. He previously debated President Biden before he ended his re-election campaign.

In a brutal day for Pope Francis, the king of Belgium, his prime minister and the rector of the Catholic university that invited him here were implicated in the institution he leads for a series of sins: the cover-up of sexual abuse cases and sexual abuse by clergy are far behind the times when it comes to the inclusion of women and the LGBTQ+ community in the church.

And all this before Francis met the people who were harmed most by the Catholic Church in Belgium – the men and women who were raped and abused as children by priests. Seventeen abuse survivors spent two hours with Francis on Friday evening, telling him of their trauma, shame and pain and demanding reparations from the church.

In doing so, Francis expressed his remorse, pleaded for forgiveness and promised to do everything to ensure that such abuses never occur again. “This is our shame and humiliation,” he said in his first public comments on Belgian soil.

Francis has previously visited countries with deplorable legacies of ecclesiastical misconduct. He issued a full apology to Irish abuse survivors in 2018 and traveled to Canada in 2022 to atone for church-run residential schools that had traumatized generations of Indigenous people.

But it is hard to imagine a single day when the head of the 1.3 billion-member Catholic Church would face such harsh public criticism from a country’s highest institutional figures – royalty, government and academia – for the Church’s crimes and exposed to their apparent crimes was a deaf response to the demands of today’s Catholics.

Luc Sels, the rector of the Catholic University of Leuven, whose 600th anniversary was the official reason for Francis’ trip to Belgium, told the pope that the abuse scandals had so weakened the church’s moral authority that it would do well to reform , if she wanted to do so in order to regain its credibility and relevance.

“Wouldn’t the church be a warmer place if women were given a prominent place, the most prominent place, including in the priesthood?” Sells asked the Pope.

“Wouldn’t the church in our region gain moral authority if it were not so rigid in its approach to gender and diversity issues? “And if, like the university, it opened its arms more to the LGBTQ+ community?” he asked.

The comments certainly reflected the views of European social progressives. But they also reflected the reform-minded church that Francis has embraced to some extent, trying to make the universal church more relevant and responsive to today’s Catholics.

The day began with King Philippe welcoming Francis to Laeken Castle, the residence of the Belgian royal family, and, citing the abuse and forced adoption scandals, called on the church to work “ceaselessly” to atone for the crimes and help the victims heal to help.

He was followed by Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, who was also allowed to speak in an exception to typical Vatican protocol. He used the opportunity of a public meeting to call for “concrete steps” to clarify the full extent of the abuse scandal and to put the interests of the victims above those of the church.

“Victims need to be heard. You have to be the center of attention. You have a right to the truth. Misdeeds must be acknowledged,” he told the pope. “If something goes wrong, we cannot accept cover-ups,” he said. “In order to be able to look into the future, the church must come to terms with its past.”

It was one of the most pointed welcome speeches ever given to the pope during a foreign trip, where the genteel dictates of diplomatic protocol typically keep public statements free of outrage.

But the tone underscored how dire the abuse scandal still is in Belgium, where two decades of abuse revelations and systematic cover-ups have destroyed the credibility of the hierarchy and contributed to an overall decline in Catholicism and the influence of the once-powerful church.

Overall, victims welcomed the words of both church and state. Survivor Emmanuel Henckens said they “got to the core of the evil to some extent. He said it was no longer possible to look away.”

But another abuse survivor, Koen Van Sumere, said it was now crucial for the church to offer victims substantial financial compensation.

“If you want to move towards forgiveness and reconciliation, it is not enough to just say ‘I’m sorry,’ you have to face the consequences that it brings and you should make up for the damage,” Van said Sumeria. He said that the payments made so far by the Belgian church amounted to “alms” and that the compensation he received for his abuse did not even cover the costs of his therapy.

The victims, 17 of whom met with Francis at the Vatican residence on Friday evening, had written an open letter to him calling for a universal system of ecclesiastical reparation for their traumas. In a statement after the meeting, the Vatican said Francis would consider their requests.

“The Pope had the opportunity to listen and approach their suffering. He thanked them for their courage and was ashamed of what they had suffered as children because of the priests to whom they were entrusted “they were able to study,” a statement from the Vatican spokesman said.

Revelations about Belgium’s horrific abuse scandal have leaked out in fits and starts for over a quarter of a century, punctuated by a bang in 2010 when the country’s longest-serving bishop, Bruges Bishop Roger Vangheluwe, was allowed to resign without penalty after admitting he was guilty of having sexually abused his nephew for 13 years.

Francis only removed Vangheluwe from office earlier this year, a move clearly aimed at eliminating a persistent source of outrage among Belgians ahead of his visit.

In September 2010, the church released a 200-page report that said 507 people had reported stories of harassment by priests, even as young as two years old. It identified at least 13 victim suicides and six additional suicide attempts.

Victims and advocates say these findings are just the tip of the iceberg and that the true scope of the scandal is far greater.

In his remarks, Francis stressed that the church is “decisively and decisively addressing” the problem of abuse by implementing prevention programs, listening to victims and accompanying them in healing.

But after the stunning vilification from the prime minister and the king, Francis deviated from the script to express the church’s shame at the scandal and his determination to end it.

“The church must be ashamed and ask for forgiveness and try to resolve this situation with Christian humility and create every possibility so that something like this does not happen again,” Francis said. “But even if it was just one (victim), it would be enough to be ashamed.”

The prime minister, king and pope also referred to a new church-related scandal rocking Belgium over so-called “forced adoptions,” which echoed earlier revelations about Ireland’s so-called mother-and-child homes.

After World War II and into the 1980s, many single mothers were forced by the Belgian church to give their newborns up for adoption, with the money changing hands.

Francis said he was “sad” to learn of these practices, but said that this criminality was “mixed with the view unfortunately prevalent in all parts of society at the time.”

BOSTON — Backup quarterback Grayson James hit Jerand Bradley late with an 8-yard scoring pass, and Boston College rebounded with two fourth-quarter touchdowns for a 21-20 victory over Western Kentucky on Saturday.

BC’s starting quarterback, Thomas Castellanos, was sidelined with an undisclosed injury.

James, a junior transfer from Florida International, completed 19 of 32 passes for 168 yards with one inception for BC (4-1). He was also chasing points.

As a 12½-point underdog, Western Kentucky (3-2) took a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter on Caden Veltkamp’s second touchdown pass of the game, a 7-yarder to Easton Messer, and had a lead going into the quarter from 20:7 fourth quarter.

Donovan Ezeiruaka forced Veltkamp’s fumble on a strip sack that was recovered by lineman George Rooks at the Hilltoppers’ 20-yard line with just over six minutes to play.

Then, six plays later, James Bradley hit near the back line of the end zone.

The Eagles made it 20-14 on James’ 1-yard bootleg with 11½ minutes left in the final quarter.

Veltkamp made his second career start and completed 25 of 39 for 232 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Castellanos was on the field before the game wearing a sweatshirt, chatting with James while the substitute warmed up.

James threw for 1,969 yards and 11 touchdowns as a sophomore at FIU in 2022 but only played in three games last season.

THE TAKEAWAY

Western Kentucky: The Hilltoppers had a much better performance than in their other game against a Power Four school this season, when they were defeated by No. 5 Alabama 63-0 in their opener.

Boston College: This game took some of the shine off a good start under first-year coach Bill O’Brien, but it could have been worse. The defense seemed confused at times, leaving receivers open until they made a few big plays in the final quarter.

IMPLICATIONS ON THE SURVEY

BC could fall further out of the top 25. The Eagles “got votes,” ranking 28th overall in last week’s poll.

Jussie Smollett reflects on his “darkest day” – the day of his arrest – five years after the crime.

“That was a pretty dark day because that’s when I realized what was happening,” he said in an interview with People published Saturday.

“Many things have tested my strength, many things have tested my mental abilities, but the one thing I have never lost – I have never started to think that I am something I am not.” That’s the only thing that didn’t happen.”

Smollett, 42, was arrested on alleged hate crime charges after telling Chicago police that he was attacked by two masked men late on the evening of January 29, 2019.

The actor, a gay black man, claimed they shouted racist and homophobic slurs at him, put a noose around his neck and doused him with bleach.

In March 2019, he was charged with 16 counts of disorderly conduct and falsifying a police report, where he pleaded not guilty. All charges were eventually dropped.

However, after further investigation, he was accused of six counts of lying to police in 2020.

In December 2021, he was found guilty of five counts of disorderly conduct for making false reports. He was sentenced to five months in prison and ordered to pay a $25,000 fine and more than $120,000 in restitution for costs incurred by Chicago police in handling his case.

He was released on bail six days after his conviction. His appeal is still pending.

“I was numb,” Smollett further recalled to People about his arrest and the events that would unfold. “I didn’t know how to connect the dots. I really didn’t know.”

“I couldn’t understand what was going on and I couldn’t understand what people were actually thinking… What exactly did they think happened? I couldn’t put two and two together.”

The former “Empire” star maintains his innocence and told People “he feels like he’s being used as a political football… by both sides.”

Before his sentencing in 2022, he reportedly told his legal team that he felt he was a victim of systemic racism in the justice system.

“My views haven’t changed,” he confirmed to People. “My heart hasn’t changed at all.”

“I am the same man I was and always will be. If a lot of people are listening to you, you should say something worth hearing.”

As he pushes for an appeal to the Illinois Supreme Court, Smollett said he is focused on moving forward with his life.

“I am very aware of my privilege in this situation. So there’s a certain point where I just can’t take the pain anymore,” he said.

“So I’m blessed to continue making films, making music and doing the things that God has called me here to do.”

A new report from NASA details that persistent air leaks at the International Space Station (ISS) pose “a major safety risk.”

The report released Sept. 26 by NASA’s Office of Inspector General and signed by Deputy Inspector General George A. Scott said the leak was in a tunnel connecting the Russian segment of the ISS to a docking port. According to the report, NASA and the Russian space agency Roscosmos continue to “work together to address structural issues with the Russian Service Module Transfer Tunnel.”

“According to NASA, Roscosmos is confident that they will be able to monitor and close the hatch to the service module before the leak rate reaches an unsustainable level,” the report said. “However, NASA and Roscosmos have not reached agreement on the point at which the leak rate is unsustainable.”

This leak has already been discussed in the public forum, with Russia acknowledging the issue back in February. However, they said it did not pose a safety risk to the crew. Still, the newly released report states that NASA detected an “increase in the leak rate to its highest level ever” in April 2024.

In May and June, representatives from the ISS program and Roscosmos met to discuss their increasing concerns about the increased leak rate. “As of August 2024, the leak risk in the service module transfer tunnel is assessed at 5 x 5,” the report said. NASA’s risk scorecard is based on both “risk probability,” which is the likelihood that a potential risk will occur, and “risk impact,” which is the potential harm that could occur if a problem occurs. Five is considered “hardest” on the five-point scale.

If the leaks continue, NASA and Roscosmos could be forced to permanently close the hatch to the affected tunnel, which would prevent astronauts from using any of the four docking ports for the Russian segment. Currently, the report says they are constantly monitoring the leaks and temporarily closing the hatch when it is not needed.

The ISS is only scheduled to operate with NASA until 2030. At this point, they plan to work with SpaceX and exit the station in a controlled manner. In 2023, Russia committed to remaining on board until 2028 and plans to build the core of a new space station by 2030.

NASA’s September inspector general report includes some recommendations for NASA’s crew, including re-examining orbiting debris tracking instruments to “ensure the safety of the crew” and documenting “contingency plans” in the event of an emergency and in the event that the air leaks become worse due to damage.

Week 5 of the college football season is headlined by a massive showdown between No. 2 Georgia and No. 4 Alabama, but there are plenty of other exciting matchups throughout the day as conference action continues to heat up across the country. Overall, the Minnesota governor watched the Golden Gophers lose 27-24 to the Wolverines in a suite with Beto O’Rourke.

Minnesota cut the game to a three-point game with 1:36 left and actually recovered an onside kick, but a special teams player was called offside, negating the play, and the Wolverines were able to play out the remainder of the period .

Before the game, Walz huddled with fans in front of the Big House.

“A little rain can’t stop us from the big Michigan-Minnesota game! And it won’t stop these students from making sure everyone on their campus is eligible to vote,” Walz posted on X.

The Wolverines are now 5-1 and have won four straight since their loss to Texas, now ranked No. 1 in the country. The Gophers are now 2-3 this season and have lost both conference games.
