New York closes tunnel that supplies half of its water for billion repair

A section of aqueduct that supplies about half of New York City’s water will be shut down for the winter as part of a $2 billion project to fix massive leaks under the Hudson River.

The temporary closure of the Delaware Aqueduct in upstate New York has been in the works for years, and officials are continually increasing capacity from other parts of the city’s sprawling 19-reservoir system. Water will flow continuously from city faucets after the shutdown begins this week, officials said. However, its famously crisp taste may be compromised as other sources become more exploited.

“The water will always be there,” said Paul Rush, deputy commissioner of the city’s Department of Environmental Protection. “We will be changing the mix of water that consumers receive.”

The Delaware Aqueduct is the longest tunnel in the world, transporting water over 85 miles (137 kilometers) from four reservoirs in the Catskill region to other reservoirs in the city’s northern suburbs. In operation since 1944, it supplies about half of the 1.1 billion gallons (4.2 billion liters) consumed daily by more than 8 million New York City residents. The system also serves some upstate communities.

But the aqueduct releases up to 35 million gallons (132 million liters) of water every day, almost all of it from a section well below the Hudson River.

The major leak has been known for decades, but city officials faced a dilemma: They couldn’t decommission the critical aqueduct for years to repair the tunnel. Instead, they began building a parallel, 4-kilometer-long bypass tunnel under the river about a decade ago.

The new tunnel will be connected during the decommissioning, which is expected to last up to eight months. More than 40 miles (64 kilometers) of the aqueduct, which descends from the four hinterland reservoirs, will be out of service during this time, but a section closer to the city will remain in use.

Additional leaks further north in the aqueduct will also be repaired in the coming months.

Rush said the work was planned to avoid the summer months when demand is higher. The city has also spent years making improvements to other parts of the system, some of which are more than 100 years old.

“There’s a lot of thought going on about where the alternative supply is going to come from,” Rush said.

The capacity of the supplemental Catskill Aqueduct has been increased, and more drinking water will come from the Croton Watershed’s dozen reservoirs and three lakes in the city’s northern suburbs.

Greater reliance on these suburban reservoirs could affect the taste of the water because more minerals and algae are present in the Croton system, city officials say.

“While some residents may notice a temporary, subtle difference in taste or smell during repairs, changes in taste do not mean there is something wrong with the water,” DEP Commissioner Rohit Aggarwala said in a prepared statement. “Just as different brands of bottled water taste a little different, our different reservoirs taste a little different.”

Goodman: Can Auburn football climb out of the abyss?

Goodman: Can Auburn football climb out of the abyss?

The Monday morning mailbag is overflowing. Auburn is plunging into the depths of the unknown, but we have answers. Let’s get down to business…

Jim in Scottsboro writes…

When I was a junior at Auburn, Pink Floyd released “Dark Side of the Moon.” Then, during my prime professional years, the movie Wall Street came out in which Hal Holbrook gave the famous speech in which he stared into the abyss. So the question: Has Auburn fallen into the abyss of no return?Or are they just on the dark side of the moon, where there is a chance of reaching the light?

PS: Talk of Lane Kiffin going to Florida and Billy Napier going to Auburn is absurd. Why should Napier succeed at Auburn if he can’t at Florida? Lane Kiffin has been to the SEC more times than a hired mule.

ANSWER: Rented mules don’t get enough credit. I have known many rented mules over the years. They’re certainly made of harder stuff than Kiffin. Take, for example, the mules at the base of the Grand Canyon. Every day they wake up in the morning and walk up and down a huge hole in the ground with other people’s problems on their backs.

There is a way out of every great divide, but it requires persistent work, step by step. Hugh Freeze at Auburn and Kiffin at Ole Miss are both in terrible shape after their Week 5 losses. Auburn gave away an 11-point lead to Oklahoma and Ole Miss, the No. 6 team in the country, plunged into a deep sea of despair against Kentucky.

Consider this: At the peak of its powers, Ole Miss can’t even beat Kentucky at home. Yes, Kiffin would definitely head to Florida if he had the chance. As for Napier going to Auburn, that’s not happening unless he becomes an assistant to Freeze next season.

I’m no science geek, but things that are at the bottom of the abyss may have a better chance of getting to the surface than any of us ever seeing the dark side of the moon. The Mailbag welcomes any rock & roll references, so we’ll try to answer the question with some of our own. As Auburn “learns to fly,” it is important to note that “money” will be required to repair every “brick in the wall.”

I continue to have faith in Auburn’s freeze despite all the evidence to the contrary on the scoreboard at the end of games. Auburn isn’t as far away as it seems. There was a point early in the fourth quarter against Oklahoma where I thought I was going to write a column about Auburn playing its best football in years. Then OU scored 17 straight points. Welp. What happened?

First, Auburn must capitalize on its scoring opportunities. The Tigers left a lot of points on the field in the first half, and in the end the Tigers had problems again. There is no easy or overnight fix at Auburn, but Freeze is making progress. Given his recruiting abilities, Auburn is still moving in the right direction despite the string of consecutive losses to Power 4 teams. We’re up to five in a row since last season, but who’s really counting at this point?

Maybe Auburn would be better off if it had hired Kiffin. Auburn fans have been critical of this opinion in the past, but I continue to believe that Coach Prime would have been the best hire. However, that doesn’t mean Freeze is a bad trainer. I’ve been working behind the scenes at Auburn and will publish a column on Wednesday explaining why Freeze is on the path to redemption on the Plains.

Matt in Dothan writes…

Hugh recruits a stallion, Walker White, and refuses to play against him? I would understand if this was 10 or 20 years ago, but with the transfer portal, the Freeze Five probably won’t be around next year after these performances, and saving a quarterback as a redshirt doesn’t seem to have any benefit. Why not try to right the ship by playing the newbie?

ANSWER: We love Monday morning quarterbacking, and Matt nails it. There were a lot of people who thought Freeze should have played with quarterback White from the start of the season and simply used this season as a teaching moment for 2025. However, let me just say this. If Freeze hits the reset button with White, it doesn’t have to be the week of the Georgia game.

Auburn started as a 24-point underdog in the Deep South’s oldest rivalry. The last thing Auburn needs is for White to get injured against the Bulldogs. At this point, all of these young receivers might actually be thinking about leaving.

Freeze has a plan for White, who was preparing as a high school student at a small school in Arkansas. If Freeze doesn’t believe White is ready, we have to trust that Auburn’s coach still knows a thing or two about football. Freeze was already trying to use backup Hank Brown, and Brown threw three interceptions in the first half against Arkansas.

Thorne did enough to keep the job against OU, and I can’t imagine Freeze making any more changes at the position until later in the season. If Auburn makes a bowl game – and that’s a long way off at this point – then perhaps White will make his debut in that game. Tennessee’s Nico Iamaleava played in the Vols’ bowl game last season, and that experience helped prepare him for his breakout run as a redshirt freshman. White appears to have a similar schedule.

Rasta in LA writes… (Note: Rasta is a dog from the strange geographical vortex called “Lower Alabama”)

Apparently the Sooners were waiting for the interception that would win the game (I think they didn’t want to bench Thorne too early in the game). My human is going to start a new drinking game during the Auburn games… Everyone has to give it a try when they hear “misunderstanding” after a bad pass from Thorne. Poor clock management at the end of the first half, missed field goals and silly quarterback changes on the goal line left 13 points on the field. But with the game in hand and all you have to do is shove the ball down their throats, do you throw three bad passes?

When we head to Dawg Town next week, we’ll see if the UGA quarterback looks more like Thorne or a Lamborghini owner. If he loses to us next week, he’ll trade it for a Prius.

One of my favorite poets, Mr. James T. Buffett (RIP), has released an album (“A1A”) that contains a very relevant tune: “Trying to Reason With Hurricane Season.” My doghouse avoided this last time, but our thoughts are with those who didn’t make it. Keep the faith, dear tigers!!! WDE!!!

ANSWER: Above all, we are happy that Rasta is safe and sound after Hurricane Helene. Our thoughts are with everyone who stood in the path of the storm as it moved toward North Carolina and Virginia.

It’s a dangerous game that combines brown water shots with Auburn turnovers. Five weeks into the season, Auburn ranks second-to-last nationally in this category. Thorne’s moment of truth ended with a pick-six against Oklahoma, and it’s as if the Sooners knew what was coming. There’s a lot of blame to go around.

Jeff west of Montgomery writes…

At Auburn, your constant negativity towards my school is abhorrent. How on earth is Auburn going to rebuild given the constant “growing darkness” articles damaging recruiting in the media? AU always has a higher mountain to climb in this state. I will always do that.

ANSWER: I’ve been more than fair with Freeze over the last two years. While I have been critical, I continue to write that things are not as bad as they seem. Maybe try reading beyond the headlines. As for the hills, I would say Auburn is about halfway up the slope at this point in the trip. I think we can both agree that firing Freeze would do more harm than good. However, he will continue to be held accountable after the games.

Rusty in Rankin County, Miss., writes…

Coach Saban was right a few years ago when he said that it makes a difference between winning a game and beating an opponent. If Auburn had won the last three games, they would have simply won some games but not actually defeated their opponents, even though they would be 5-0 and likely locked in a bowl game.

If Auburn wants to make significant football gains for years and be a playoff contender, it will take time and fans will have to stop the incessant insults to players and coaches. It saps energy and concentration.

ANSWER: Wise words from Rankin County, Mississippi. Maybe I’m crazy, but I think Freeze is making progress at Auburn despite entering SEC play 0-2 in his second season here. Ultimately it’s about setting up the team for 2025. Freeze could have cooked the chicken in the microwave, but he has the bird on the smoker.

A strong performance against Georgia will tell us a lot about Freeze’s ability to keep this team focused and motivated. The Tigers don’t need to win, but Georgia needs to know that Auburn is rising from deep.

TikTok video downloader | Yonkers Times

TikTok video downloader | Yonkers Times

TikTok’s breakthrough on the social media scene has been largely attributed to the more organic way users interact with each other and the algorithm. Unlike Instagram, which focuses on high-quality curated videos, TikTok focuses on the present, turning fleeting trends and spontaneous posts into communities.

But the videos shared on TikTok don’t have to be fleeting themselves. With a TikTok downloader tool, you can keep the videos on your device long after they disappear from your feed. You can then use the video to create new content.

How to use a TikTok video downloader

The TikTok video downloader tool itself is a relatively simple affair. Here’s the general breakdown of what you need to do to grab a video from the platform:

  1. Watch the video you want to download in the app.
  2. Select “Share” from the right menu (the curved arrow).
  3. Select “Copy Link” from the second row of icons – you may need to scroll a bit.
  4. Open your browser.
  5. Go to the TikTok video downloader you want to use – enter the URL directly or find it in your bookmarks or search history.
  6. Paste the copied link into the text bar provided on the website. If you’re using a phone, long press and tap “Paste.” For PC users, use Ctrl+V. There may also be a large Insert button that achieves the same effect.
  7. Click the “Download” button. You may be asked to confirm these choices if you are redirected through ads or storage notifications.

And voila, the video is saved to your browser’s download location (usually the File Manager app on Android, Files on iOS, and Downloads on PC).

Once downloaded, the video can be used in any way you want (with some restrictions). But beyond the technical use of a TikTok video downloader tool, here’s how you can use it to grow your TikTok profile.

Get inspired

Some estimates suggest that over 34 million new videos are uploaded to the platform every day. This is a wealth of content that the algorithm crawls and suggests to other users based on their search history. But it’s also a treasure trove for smaller YouTubers who want to find out the hottest trends or the best way to improve their follower numbers.

You can search for new hashtags or trends you want to explore, or even use the For You page to find out what the algorithm thinks you should follow. But perhaps more importantly, there are countless other developers who have turned the algorithm game on its head and amassed thousands upon millions of followers.

TikTok video downloader tool allows you to save the most inspiring and relevant videos directly to your device. Check them out again if you need an idea for a video or to see what topics are trending in your particular niche.

Reuse existing content

Normally, all content shared on TikTok is automatically copyrighted by the original creator. This means that downloading a video from the platform and reusing it in that state is copyright infringement and punishable by law (and the platform will probably ban you even faster than the legal process can reach you).

However, the fair use doctrine permits the reuse of other people’s content (sometimes without express permission) as long as it has been meaningfully converted or modified for commentary or entertainment purposes.

This is a somewhat long-winded explanation of how reaction or comment videos, “duets,” and video stitching are perfectly legal practices. In fact, these types of videos can sometimes be the foundation of a successful content creation tactic.

To get the best results from other people’s content, you need high-quality source material and this is where the TikTok video downloader tool comes into play. Save the videos from TikTok that you want to edit and export them to your editing app for further processing. Choose the tool carefully so that the image or audio quality of the video is not affected.

If you want to reuse content as is, make sure you get express permission from the original creator. You should also check your local copyright laws to make sure you are in the clear. Otherwise, the reshare button is a much safer choice, although it won’t help your profile grow as much.

Dive deep into editing practices

While TikTok videos generally benefit from lower-quality, more likeable videos, there’s a fine line between creating a video from a fleeting idea and complete randomness. You still need to have a plan and figure out how to deliver great content to your chosen audience. If you want to learn from the best, you may have to follow in their footsteps in more than just the subject matter.

Download the most successful videos and pay attention to how they are edited and presented. With the right storytelling method and seamless editing, a video can be much more entertaining to the public, and you can use other creators’ videos as a guide.

Improve audience interactions

If you’ve already made a name for yourself on TikTok (or other social media), you probably already know how powerful user-generated content is. The videos your audience creates that follow your trends or meet the challenges you set can be great examples of community building.

While you can re-share these videos with your audience at any time, you can incorporate the key moments into your overall content strategy. Save the best TikTok videos to create compelling compilations that combine your editing skills with the ingenuity of your followers. This further strengthens the sense of community and encourages more followers to meaningfully interact with your content.

Make cross-posting a breeze

Because of its inherent focus on posting videos created with minimal post-production, TikTok and its editing subplatform CapCut are excellent options for recording crisp videos for most social media. However, the videos uploaded to TikTok contain the telltale watermark and may not have all the necessary editing effects for other apps.

While most tools remove the watermark in some way (if the option is supported), the best TikTok video downloader tools can seamlessly bypass the watermark, making it seem like it was never there. This allows you to export the video for another editing tool or take it as is and upload it to various social media. Reusing content can significantly reduce the time it takes to create new content and consolidate your communication channel. This is especially useful when creating content. In addition, services to increase the number of followers are available to you. This can be a quick way to get more engagement on your content.

Google “immediately” censored Trump-themed ads, but not Harris ads, executives say

Google “immediately” censored Trump-themed ads, but not Harris ads, executives say

Grant Cardone, a popular real estate investor and private equity fund manager, has been uploading entrepreneurial videos and monetized advertising to Google-owned YouTube since 2007.

But over the past six months, increasingly vocal support of former President Donald Trump and discussions of his and Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris’ respective policies on the social platform have reportedly gotten him into trouble. Cardone claims Google “immediately” flagged his content for an image of Trump and waited nearly two weeks before reporting content featuring Harris.

“We are not new to advertising. We’re new to what’s happened over the last eight or nine months since I became a very strong Trump supporter.” [have] “We’re going to make this more public,” Cardone told Fox News Digital on Wednesday.

“We directed advertising traffic to a new YouTube channel – again, we weren’t selling any product or service – specifically to make people aware of these 10X Studios.” [YouTube] Channel that features essentially entrepreneurial content to help Americans learn new ways to become entrepreneurs and manage money and business.”

CEO and real estate investor says Democratic Party he grew up in no longer has regular people: It’s all a ‘shame’

“We’ve had more account suspensions and ad disapprovals in the last six months for ads that have been running for 18 months,” Jarrod Glandt, president of Cardone Enterprises, told Fox Digital.

10X co-founder Grant Cardone and Cardone Enterprises President Jarrod Glandt spoke to Fox News Digital about their alleged advertising censorship on Google platforms. (Getty Images)

“We just had two more accounts suspended on Monday, both on Meta and Google, than we have had in the last 10 years of driving traffic online,” Glandt said. “I’ve never seen anything like this before. I had it checked by external agencies. They can’t figure it out. It’s completely absurd.”

In a now-viral Instagram Reel posted earlier this month, Cardone explained how his 10X Studios account had uploaded an original 10X brand advertisement when an automated Google check revealed the video was due to “election advertising.” “was not eligible for monetization” until Cardone allegedly changed the title and thumbnail of a video to show Kamala Harris. The version featuring Harris ran from September 4th to 11th, and Google did not flag and remove that ad until September 17th, Cardone claimed.

“[We] just shift traffic awareness to a free channel. So we couldn’t figure out what it was. And then I said, “Hey, any chance it’s Trump’s thumbnail?”…Take out the Trump picture and replace it with [Harris]’,” he explained.

“For clarity, it wasn’t even a Trump thumbnail in the main ad, but rather a roughly 60-second ad [10X] Page. And of probably 25 thumbnails of videos that were there, one had a picture of Trump in it,” Glandt explained.

Cardone added: “For the record, I am not affiliated with this [Trump] Campaign. I am a free American who cares about the development of our country. And I think Donald Trump is the best choice for what’s going on in our country right now, especially with our economy.”

In a statement to Fox News Digital, a Google spokesperson said “this issue was resolved weeks ago” and that the election ad verification process is required for any advertiser who wants to run ads that reference or contain images of political candidates.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s net worth reaches $200 billion

“Under our policies, both ads should have been rejected because the advertiser did not complete our election advertising verification process. The second ad was originally approved in error and has since been blocked. Our policies are designed to treat all advertisers equally, regardless of their status.” Occasionally our systems make mistakes and we correct them as soon as we notice them.

Google is also under federal scrutiny, as the Justice Department filed an antitrust lawsuit against the company earlier this month over its alleged monopoly power in the ad tech industry.

Additionally, just this week, Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., launched an investigation into Google and Meta for reportedly listening in on Cox users’ phone calls and tailoring ads to their conversations.

When asked if he had a message for Google, Cardone explained why they shouldn’t get involved.

“Stay out of my business and let me express my politics and my political opinions the way I want,” he said. “We try to give people great jobs and great opportunities, and our companies help Americans make money right. We do this without government funding… I want to spend money on your business. Don’t punish me. And if you want to punish me, just tell me you don’t want my money.

Recent experiences on the YouTube and Google Ads platforms have “100%” prompted Cardone and his 10X brands to consider posting exclusively on free-speech-friendly sites like Rumble and now X, led by Elon Musk.

“We are receiving more positive support from Americans who believe in freedom and freedom of speech than ever before,” Cardone said.

“While some Americans tend to shy away from it because it hurts them for a second, it seems to us that our customer base is expanding and almost becoming zealots, if you will, to support those people who are willing to to stand up and have a voice despite the potential strain on their company.”

FA Cup: King’s Lynn pays extra stewards after fans attacked

FA Cup: King’s Lynn pays extra stewards after fans attacked

“We understand that the Worksop fans were exuberant, they had just scored the equalizer and had the right to celebrate that moment, but there is a line that should not be crossed and it was.”

King’s Lynn says any Worksop supporters attempting to get into the home game on Tuesday night will be thrown off without compensation.

A club statement on Sunday said: “We appreciate that many Worksop fans behave in a decent and respectable manner and that the few have ruined it for the many.”

“As a club, fan safety is of the utmost importance to King’s Lynn Town FC and we will always do everything in our power to ensure that fans in our stadium can watch the game without fear.”

In response, Worksop said: “There was no evidence of drunkenness or any breach of the laws relating to the purchase and consumption of alcohol at Saturday’s game.”

Their statement continued: “For 99 minutes of play, the game reflected the good-natured attention of the spectators and our fans received King’s Lynn’s goal (against the run of play) with goodwill, which separated the teams until the last minute when we … Only then did the behavior of the King’s Lynn fans turn ugly.”

The club also said that nine volunteer stewards and five other security guards were present at the game.

Worksop reached the third round of the FA Cup in 1955/56, but were eliminated by Swindon Town.

King’s Lynn’s best cup run took them to the second round proper in 2020/21 before losing to Portsmouth. They did this again two seasons later, but lost at home to Stevenage.

5 things we learned from the win

5 things we learned from the win

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Here are five things we learned from Ohio State’s 38-7 win over Michigan State on Saturday night:

The Buckeyes are making real progress on offense

Michigan State presented the first real test of a Chip Kelly-revamped offense.

Through four weeks, the Spartans allowed just 4.3 yards per play, a mark that ranked 17th in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

Part of their success came from pressuring quarterbacks. Before this weekend, only one defense in the country had recorded more sacks.

More:Is Ohio State the best college for sports fans? Vote now!

The pressure contributed to Buckeyes quarterback Will Howard intercepting a pass to Emeka Egbuka in double coverage in the second quarter.

But otherwise, Ohio State was flawless and broke through the defense. Six of his first eight drives resulted in points. The offensive line also prevented Howard from being sacked. Before retiring their starters after three quarters, the Buckeyes were averaging 7.3 yards per play, relying on the backfield tandem of TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins and a number of other playmakers.

Will Howard and the Ohio State Buckeyes were 3 for 4 on fourth down in a 38-7 win over Michigan State.

Ryan Day trusts Will Howard

Two decisions in the quarterfinals by Day showed how much he trusted Howard.

It was early in the second quarter when Howard was nearly picked off in the end zone on third-and-goal, appearing to tackle Jeremiah Smith as safety Malik Spencer slid over to coverage to break up the pass.

Day responded by making them go all out on the next play, with Howard dropping back and finding tight end Gee Scott Jr. open on a drag route for a score.

The Buckeyes also had Howard scanned downfield when they faced a fourth-and-5 at Michigan State’s 33-yard line in the third quarter.

The call resulted in him connecting with Egbuka in a crossing pattern. Egbuka caught the ball just inside the 20-yard line and stayed in front of safety Nikai Martinez as he ran down the sideline en route to a 33-yard touchdown.

“I love when you feel the confidence of your coordinator and your head coach,” Howard said, “when they put the ball in your hands on fourth down.”

Despite Ohio State's Caleb Downs' six-tackle performance, the Buckeyes' defense looked vulnerable at times against Michigan State.

Slow starts plague the defense

While Michigan State didn’t score any points on its first possession, it was the last team to move the ball against the Buckeyes’ defense in the early going.

The Spartans covered 55 yards in seven plays, reaching Ohio State’s 20-yard line before linebacker Cody Simon stuffed Aidan Chiles on a quarterback sneak on fourth down.

It was the third time in four games that the Buckeyes allowed an opponent to cross midfield on their first drive, after Akron started last week with a 48-yard field goal and Marshall reached the end zone.

More:Does Ohio State have the best college sports tradition? Vote now!

The Buckeyes were so vulnerable this week that they allowed the Spartans an average of 8.6 yards per play on their first four drives.

In addition to the four-down stop, forced fumbles prevented drives from making much of a difference on the scoreboard, but a more experienced offense will likely benefit from it.

Jeremiah Smith is the key to the red zone

Through four games, the Buckeyes have been nearly perfect in the red zone.

Each of their 16 trips inside the 20-yard line resulted in points and only once was it not a touchdown.

One factor is Smith, the star freshman wide receiver. Smith is a skilled pass catcher who made a one-handed grab for a 17-yard touchdown late in the second quarter on Saturday and also ran 19 yards into the end zone on an earlier drive.

Of the Buckeyes’ 15 red zone touchdowns this year, four were the result of Smith, including two against the Spartans.

Emeka Egbuka saw time as a kick returner for Ohio State on Saturday against Michigan State.

The search for kickoff returnees continues

The Buckeyes have used a different kickoff returner in three straight games.

After Jayden Ballard misjudged a fair catch on a return against Western Michigan, they replaced him with Brandon Inniss, who started as a returner against Marshall last week.

But they sent Emeka Egbuka against the Spartans so he could reprise his role from his first season in 2021.

Touchbacks from Michigan State kicker Jonathan Kim ultimately kept Egbuka from returning the ball.

Inniss continues to return punts, taking two of them for 19 yards this week, but there is no clear option on kickoffs.

ATLANTA (AP) — Republican JD Vance and Democrat Tim Walz meet Tuesday in the only vice presidential debate of the 2024 election, featuring undercards that have spent two months battling each other and the opposing candidates vying for the spots leading major parties come together.

The match, hosted by CBS News in New York, may not have the same stakes as the Sept. 10 debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. But it offers her top lieutenants a new opportunity to step forward, vouch for their superiors and assume the time-honored role of a vice president: attack dog. It will include the largest television and online audience to watch No. 2 before Election Day.

Walz, the 60-year-old governor of Minnesota, and Vance, a 40-year-old US senator from Ohio, have been eyeing possible approaches for weeks. Before Harris picked him, Walz was the Democrat who coined “weird” as a derogatory slur for Republicans. Vance criticizes the governor’s progressive record as evidence that Democrats are too far left for voters.

Vance mocked his fellow veteran’s military service. Walz criticizes Vance’s opposition to abortion rights and his views on family life. Both men have demonstrated their credentials as small-town, middle-America residents – in contrast to Trump, the billionaire New Yorker, and Harris, a California native from the Bay Area.

It sets up a potentially violent night in Manhattan. Here are the dynamics to consider when the rivals meet in person for the first time:

Is it more Walz vs. Vance or Harris vs. Trump?

Running mates have a balancing act. Their main job is to advocate for their superiors. But a vice presidential candidate’s credibility and connection to the audience are important factors in achieving this goal. If a voter doesn’t like Messenger, they are less likely to buy the message.

As the debate begins, a new AP-NORC poll suggests Walz is more popular than Vance, potentially posing a greater challenge to the Republican.

The poll found that only a quarter of registered voters have a somewhat or very favorable opinion of the Ohio senator, while about half have a somewhat or very unfavorable opinion. About a quarter don’t know enough to say. Walz is rated positively by about 4 in 10 voters and negatively by about 3 in 10; The rest don’t know enough to say.

Still, Sen. Tim Kaine, a Virginia Democrat and 2016 vice presidential candidate, warned attendees not to think too much about themselves.

“The only advice that matters is to protect the top of the ticket,” Kaine insisted, recalling the 2000 duel between Republican Dick Cheney and Democrat Joe Lieberman. “Cheney continued to attack (Al) Gore, and Lieberman tried to make himself sympathetic instead of defending Gore. … You can’t let attacks go unanswered.”

Abortion rights and views on family will be at the forefront

Democrats believe abortion rights and reproductive health care will motivate their core voters and influence swing voters.

Walz has already tried to capitalize on this by mixing his story into the argument. The governor often talks about how he and his wife Gwen needed fertility treatments to have their daughter. Democrats excoriated Vance for his 2021 joke about “childless cat ladies” dotting American life. And Walz was eager to echo Harris’ emphasis on abortion rights as the anchor of her overall campaign theme: “Freedom.”

Vance and Trump, meanwhile, have struggled to deliver a unified message on abortion rights — a reflection of how politically sensitive the issue is for Republicans, as support for abortion access has waned since the Supreme Court’s 2022 Roe v. Repealing Wade has increased a woman’s constitutional right to have an abortion. Trump boasts about appointing conservatives who helped defeat Roe and return abortion regulation to state governments. Many Republicans now want to go beyond state bans and limit the process at the federal level, but Trump has suggested that repealing Roe is enough. He has also waffled about how he will vote on a referendum in Florida that would expand abortion rights.

Vance said in August that Trump would veto a national ban if it were approved by Congress. A few weeks later, during Trump’s debate with Harris, the former president declined to answer, saying, “I haven’t spoken to JD about it.” The Harris campaign amplified Vance’s statement as a Senate candidate that he wanted a nationwide ban of abortion.

Vance and Walz compete for economic advantage

Vance often makes clearer arguments than Trump when it comes to boosting American manufacturing, helping workers and punishing companies. He regularly attacks the Biden-Harris administration over inflation. If there’s one broad issue on which Vance wants to put Walz on the defensive and President Joe Biden on the Democratic ticket, it’s the economy.

For her part, Harris declares that “building the middle class will be a critical goal of my presidency.” She acknowledges the struggles of many consumers but generally defends Biden’s overall record of economic growth, low unemployment and rising wages since he inherited the COVID-19 freefall.

Both campaigns contain competing packages of economic proposals, including different tax cuts and subsidies for specific sectors. Expect the candidates to spend a lot of time convincing the dwindling portion of persuadable voters that their ticket better fits the everyday economic concerns of most U.S. households.

The two are expected to talk about their Central American roots

Even if the debate is about Harris and Trump, the two candidates have come here not least because of their respective biographies.

Trump’s election was an attempt to further solidify the Republican Party as an electoral vehicle for Middle America. The author of the memoir “Hillbilly Elegy,” who grew up in small-town Ohio, has roots that match his economic populism in a way that billionaire Trump does not.

Walz and Harris both grew up in the middle class, but Walz remains firmly rooted there, from his childhood on a farm in Nebraska to the high school classrooms of Minnesota before he ran for office. It is both a juxtaposition and an affirmation of Harris’ story as the daughter of an Indian mother and a Jamaican father.

Both men have made their families part of their political identities. Everyone has a working spouse. Walz has two children – a young adult and a teenager. Vance has three young sons. The Walzes and Vances are more traditional political families than those of the presidential candidates: Harris has adult stepchildren from her 10-year marriage to Doug Emhoff; Trump has five children from three marriages.

Even as they try to keep their bosses in the spotlight, expect both vice presidents to emphasize their own stories.

The responsibility for fact checking lies with the candidates

CBS announced Friday that it will be up to the candidates to remain honest with one another during Tuesday’s debate – a sticking point in previous debates this year.

In the June debate between Trump and Biden, CNN’s Jake Tapper and Dana Bash limited follow-up questions and did not fact-check any of the participants. In September’s Trump-Harris debate, ABC’s David Muir and Linsey Davis weighed in with factual corrections to some of Trump’s most glaring misrepresentations.

Dortmund vs Celtic Predictions

After a poor showing in European competitions, Celtic are aiming for a third straight Champions League win, but it would be a major surprise if they managed a hat-trick away to Borussia Dortmund.

The Glasgow giants beat Feyenoord 2-1 in their final group game last season and started their 2024-25 Champions League campaign with a 5-1 home win over Slovan Bratislava.

Celtic are 4-7 ahead of Hills and will clinch a playoff spot by finishing between ninth and 24th in the league stage. That seems to be a realistic goal with games against Club Brugge, Dinamo Zagreb and Young Boys still to come.

Avoiding defeat against last season’s runners-up Dortmund would be a huge advantage for Brendan Rodgers’ men, although they could make the hosts work for their win.

BVB topped a group consisting of Paris St-Germain, Milan and Newcastle last season before beating PSV Eindhoven, Atlético Madrid and PSG to reach the Champions League final against Real Madrid.

They terrified the Spanish champions but conceded two late goals, marking the end of coach Edin Terzic’s second spell at the club.

Prolific Stuttgart striker Serhou Guirassy arrived in the summer and Dortmund got off to a solid start under new coach Nuri Sahin.

They won 3-0 away at Club Brugge on matchday one, but had to wait until the 76th minute to make the breakthrough, which is why it is attractive to bet on a draw and a double result for Dortmund in the game against Celtic.

Late goals characterized BVB’s first weeks of the season – ten of its 14 goals in the Bundesliga and Champions League came after an hour.

Celtic will be encouraged by signs of vulnerability in Dortmund’s last two league games, when they lost 5-1 at Guirassy’s former club Stuttgart before going down 2-0 at home to local rivals Bochum on Friday.

Just before half-time, Guirassy halved the deficit and Dortmund won 4-2, with substitute Felix Nmecha scoring the final goal of the game.

Sahin has a number of talented attacking midfielders in his squad, including 20-year-old Englishman Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, although Celtic have kept six clean sheets in nine games this season.

One of those failures came in a 3-0 league win over Rangers and they restricted Slovan Bratislava to just two shots on target on matchday one before recording a 6-0 win away to St Johnstone on Saturday.

The trip to Dortmund represents significant progress for Rodgers and his players, and BVB is likely to expose the gap in quality in the second half.
