NEW YORK – New York City residents may notice that their drinking water tastes different starting Monday.

“New York City’s tap water is the envy of the world – that’s why we have the best pizza and bagels in the country,” Mayor Eric Adams said in a statement. “Today we launch the final phase of an 11-year project to secure the future of our water supply and ensure New Yorkers can continue to enjoy the billions of gallons of drinking water we use every day.”

The Delaware Aqueduct, which supplies half of the city’s piped water, will be temporarily shut down as part of a $2 billion project to fix massive leaks under the Hudson River.

To offset that, officials have increased capacity in other parts of the city’s 19-reservoir system. Even if the water supply is not interrupted, the famously crisp taste can change.

“The water will always be there,” said Paul Rush, deputy commissioner of the Department of Environmental Protection. “We will be changing the mix of water that consumers receive.”

“While some residents may notice a temporary, subtle difference in taste or aroma during repairs, changes in taste do not mean there is something wrong with the water,” DEP Commissioner Rohit Aggarwala said in a statement. “Just as different brands of bottled water taste a little different, our different reservoirs taste a little different.”

What’s wrong with the Delaware Aqueduct?

The Delaware Aqueduct is the longest tunnel in the world, transporting water over 85 miles from four reservoirs in the Catskill region to other reservoirs in the city’s northern suburbs. In operation since 1944, it supplies about half of the 1.1 billion gallons per day consumed by more than 8 million New York City residents. The system also serves some upstate communities.

But the aqueduct releases up to 35 million gallons of water every day, almost all of it from a section well below the Hudson River.

The major leak has been known for decades, but city officials faced a dilemma: They couldn’t decommission the critical aqueduct for years to repair the tunnel. Instead, they began building a parallel 2.5-mile bypass tunnel under the river about a decade ago.

The new tunnel will be connected during the decommissioning, which is expected to last up to eight months. More than 40 miles of the aqueduct that descends from the four hinterland reservoirs will be out of service during this time, but a section closer to the city will remain in use.

Additional leaks further north in the aqueduct will also be repaired in the coming months.

NYC relies on northern reservoirs

Rush said the work was planned to avoid the summer months when demand is higher. The city has also spent years making improvements to other parts of the system, some of which are more than 100 years old.

“There’s a lot of thought going on about where the alternative supply is going to come from,” Rush said.

The capacity of the supplemental Catskill Aqueduct has been increased and more drinking water will come from the Croton Watershed’s dozen reservoirs and three lakes in the city’s northern suburbs.

Greater reliance on these suburban reservoirs could affect the taste of the water because more minerals and algae are present in the Croton system, city officials say.

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed asked a court to overturn her conviction or set a new trial in the shooting, alleging misconduct and suppression of evidence by law enforcement.

Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer halted and ended Baldwin’s trial in July due to police and prosecutors’ misconduct and withholding evidence from the defense related to the 2021 shooting of Halyna Hutchins on the set outside Santa Fe.

Gutierrez-Reed was convicted in March by a jury in a trial led by Marlowe Sommer, who later sentenced her to the maximum sentence of 18 months.

Gutierrez-Reed’s involuntary manslaughter conviction is already pending appeal in a higher court.

Prosecutors accused Gutierrez-Reed of unintentionally bringing live ammunition to the set of “Rust” and failing to follow basic gun safety protocols.

Gutierrez-Reed’s lawyers argued that her case should be reconsidered because prosecutors failed to turn over evidence that might have been exculpatory.

She was acquitted at trial of allegations that she had tampered with evidence in the Rust investigation.

Gutierrez-Reed also pleaded not guilty to a separate felony charge that she allegedly carried a gun into a Santa Fe bar where firearms are banned.

A proposed plea agreement awaits judicial review.

Baldwin, the lead actor and co-producer of Rust, was pointing a gun at Hutchins during a rehearsal for a film set outside Santa Fe in October 2021 when the revolver exploded, killing Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza.

The Atlanta Braves play in an MLB doubleheader today against the New York Mets. Game one begins at 12:10 p.m. CT on ESPN 2 and Bally Sports South. The Braves failed to secure their spot in the playoffs last night as they lost 4-2 to the Kansas City Royals. During the loss, Atlanta’s designated hitter Marcell Ozuna had major issues at the plate. He finished the game 0-4, so he needs to improve his performance this afternoon.

Notably, Ozuna leads the team with 39 home runs and 102 RBI this season.

The Mets improved their playoff chances by defeating the Milwaukee Brewers 5-0 yesterday. Francisco Lindor played well in the win, hitting a home run and recording two RBI. He will be a key player to watch this afternoon as he currently leads the team with a .272 batting average.

The Iowa Hawkeyes have made changes to their 2025 non-conference football schedule, FBSchedules.com has learned.

Iowa was originally scheduled to open the 2025 season against the Florida Atlantic Owls on August 30 at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City, Iowa. According to a copy of a contract amendment obtained by FBSchedules.com through a public records request, the game has been rescheduled for August 31, 2030.

Under the original contract, Iowa agreed to pay Florida Atlantic $1.6 million guaranteed to play in 2025. Under the terms of the change, Iowa will now pay Florida Atlantic $650,000 through February 1, 2026 and $1.4 million through February 1. 2031. The increased amount is likely due to the competition being postponed just over a year before it was scheduled to take place (the change was drafted in June and only finalized on September 25).

In replacement of the Florida Atlantic game, Iowa has added a home game against the UAlbany Great Danes on August 30, 2025 at Kinnick Stadium. According to the contract copy, UAlbany will receive a guarantee of $500.00 to play the game.

UAlbany is a member of the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The Great Danes are 1-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play so far this season.

With the changes, Iowa has now finalized its schedule for the 2025 season. After opening the season against UAlbany, the Hawkeyes will face in-state rival Iowa State Cyclones on September 6th before completing their non-conference slate the following week at home against the UMass Minutemen on September 13th.

In the Big Ten in 2025, Iowa will host Indiana, Michigan State, Minnesota, Oregon and Penn State and visit Nebraska, Rutgers, USC and Wisconsin.

Florida Atlantic now needs a fourth non-conference opponent for next season and will likely fill that spot with an FCS team. The Owls are scheduled to open the season on August 30th at the Maryland Terrapins and also visit the FIU Panthers on September 13th. FAU will complete nonleague play on November 22nd at home against the UConn Huskies.

FAU’s American opponents next season include East Carolina, Memphis, Tulsa and UAB at home and Navy, Rice, Tulane and USF on the road.

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines remains one of the countries with the worst 5G access in the Asia-Pacific region, making it difficult for consumers to load their games and videos in high quality.

In an analysis, Benjamin Ives, senior business analyst at Opensignal, said the Philippines achieved 5G download speeds of 146.3 Mbps in June, the fourth lowest among 13 economies in the region.

Additionally, the Philippines recorded a 5G upload speed of 13.2 Mbps, the lowest in the measurement, increasing the urgency for the country to improve its network capabilities.

South Korea leads the pack in both 5G download and upload speeds with 427.5 Mbps and 52.2 Mbps respectively. Ives attributed South Korea’s dominance in the 5G space to its efforts to build the network back in 2019.

“South Korea is a leader in 5G network development, having become the first country to launch a public 5G network in 2019. This has given it ample opportunity to further develop the technology, which has been reflected in average 5G download and upload speeds well above those of South Korea and other countries in the Asia-Pacific region,” Ives said.

Additionally, Filipinos suffer the worst gaming experience in Asia and the Pacific when connected to 5G and suffer the second worst voice and video quality.

“For countries that have adopted the 5G network, the new technology will help improve experiences for video, gaming and voice applications,” said Ives.

Additionally, the Philippines ranks in the bottom half when it comes to network availability, with only 11.4 percent of the population covered by 5G service.

In comparison, India can reach 52.1 percent of its population, while Singapore and South Korea reach 35.9 percent and 34 percent, respectively. Ives noted that it is difficult to introduce new infrastructure in archipelago countries such as the Philippines and Indonesia.

In an earlier interview with The STAR, Andres Vicente, head of Southeast Asia, Oceania and India market region at Ericsson, said the Philippines would benefit from a full transition to 5G.

According to Ericsson estimates, every time a country increases its mobile subscriber base by 10 percent, the economy grows by 0.8 percent, particularly for high-speed, low-latency 5G.

Ericsson expects the number of 5G subscriptions in the Philippines to increase fivefold from 13 million in 2024 to 70 million in 2029, reflecting a broader shift among Filipinos.

YouTube blocks music videos from several artists in the dispute

Since Saturday, numerous YouTube videos featuring music by well-known artists such as Adele, Green Day, Bob Dylan, Nirvana and REM have no longer been accessible to viewers in the USA.

For example, if you try to play Bob Dylan’s iconic song “Like a Rolling Stone,” you will receive a message saying that the video is unavailable due to content owned by SESAC, a music rights organization. It is important to note that not all of these artists’ videos are blocked. Some may remain available due to exceptions or oversights in the current dispute.

YouTube has attributed the removal of many popular songs to an ongoing disagreement with SESAC, which represents over 35,000 artists and publishers.

In a statement, YouTube expressed regret over the situation: “Despite our best efforts, we were unable to reach a fair settlement before the deadline.” We take copyright law very seriously and therefore the content represented by SESAC is not available on YouTube in the US more available. We are in active discussions with SESAC and hope to reach a new agreement as soon as possible.”

This issue parallels a similar dispute earlier this year between Universal Music Group and TikTok, which resulted in songs by major artists such as Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish being removed from that platform.

Unlike Universal Music Group, SESAC is not a record label, but rather a rights organization that collects royalties for songwriters and publishers and works similarly to ASCAP and BMI. In addition to the artists mentioned above, SESAC also represents talents such as Burna Boy, George Clinton, Kenny Rogers, Kings of Leon and many others.

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (FOX 2) – Election Day is fast approaching — November 5, 2024, in case you haven’t been paying attention — and in Michigan, mail-in ballots are being sent out ahead of the historic vote.

The race for the White House is attracting the most national attention. Here in Michigan, we will also vote on a new U.S. Senator, as well as all 13 members of the U.S. House of Representatives and the state legislature in Lansing.

How do I register to vote in Michigan?

Registering to vote in Michigan is extremely easy. There are three different ways to register: online, by mail, or in person at your clerk’s office.

You can register to vote online up to two weeks before the election. That means you have until Monday, October 21st to register online or by mail.

The state of Michigan makes it easy to register to vote – Simply go to the Secretary of State’s website and enter the information.

If you have recently moved, you should check that your address is correct so you can vote in person or receive your ballot in the mail.

How do you verify your voter registration?

If you are worried about your registration status, Check it out now.

To vote in Michigan, you must be a U.S. citizen, live in the state, and not currently serving a prison sentence.

Anyone who is at least 16 years old can pre-register to vote. However, someone can only cast their vote from the age of 18. Six months after turning 17, the state automatically registers them to vote.

If you are 18 years old on election day, you can vote.

To register, someone must provide proof of residency, which can include either a driver’s license or state ID, a recent utility bill or bank statement, or a paycheck.

The application can be completed online, at a State Department field office, at the clerk’s office, or by mail. Once the application is processed, the clerk’s office will send a voter registration card.

How to vote by mail in Michigan

In order to vote by post – also known as postal voting – you must apply for a postal vote. Michigan won’t will automatically send you a postal ballot.

You can do this by registering on the Michigan Secretary of State websiteCall your city clerk and ask them to mail you an application that you can download the application on the state website and mail it in or go directly to your clerk’s office.

There are applications available in other languages, including Arabic, Spanish, BengaliAnd Farsi.

Here’s how to request an absentee ballot for the November election in Michigan

If you choose to vote by mail, you will receive a ballot envelope that contains a ballot, a secrecy envelope, and ballot marking instructions. When you receive your ballot, mark your vote just as you would in person. Complete each race according to the instructions on your ballot.

Make sure you sign your ballot or it won’t count. Then return it to your clerk’s office by the deadline.

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow admitted to making a mistake that caused head coach Zac Taylor to briefly miss air.

But Burrow also shrugged his shoulders.

And why not?

The mistake in question still led to a touchdown – a historic one at that – and a 34-24 road victory for the Carolina Panthers for the Bengals’ first win of the season.

“Maybe not my best decision, but it worked out for us,” Burrow said of his decision to throw a screen to running back Zack Moss with just six seconds left before halftime and the Bengals out of a timeout.

Moss slipped while playing and fell to the ground. Had he been stopped short of the end zone, time would have expired and the Bengals would have escaped with no points and gone into the locker room with a 14-14 tie.

“Hold your breath,” Taylor said of the play. “It’s great when it works.”

Luckily for the Bengals, Moss was able to get back to his feet with one second left and get into the end zone for the go-ahead touchdown.

“I trusted Zack to make that play. I thought he had enough room,” Burrow said.

Taylor said the screen to Moss wasn’t the primary option in the play call, but Burrow chose it.

“He can see it better than we can from the sideline where that was,” Taylor added. “(Burrow) felt like Zack obviously had a chance to get in there. Happy if it works.”

With just six seconds left before halftime, the pass – and Burrow’s decision – had to be made quickly, which is why he took the risk.

“They plan plays for normal situations,” Taylor added. “You don’t make plans when there are six seconds left in the half, which is about the grayest area you can get. Six seconds left and if the ball tips into the air, the clock will run out.”

What made the touchdown particularly significant was that it allowed the Bengals to do something they’ve always strived for but rarely accomplished.

The reason teams retire after winning the first coin toss is so they have a chance to double dip by scoring at the end of the first half and then again on the first possession of the second half.

The Bengals followed Moss’ touchdown reception one second before halftime with an eight-play, 71-yard touchdown drive behind great offensive line play early in the second quarter. Chase Brown’s 1-yard run gave Cincinnati a 28-14 lead.

It is the first time in the Taylor era that the Bengals have scored a touchdown on the final non-knee-down drive of the first half and again on the first possession of the second half.

There were touchdown-field goal combinations, but even those were rare.

And there were instances where the Bengals scored touchdowns on their final drive of the first half and the first drive of the second half, but the opponent had a possession (or two) between them.

There are three such cases.

Last year in Monday night’s game in Jacksonville, the Bengals scored a touchdown on a 2-yard run by Joe Mixon with 1:04 left. The Jaguars had 64 seconds to work before halftime, and they got the ball first in the third quarter and went out of bounds three times.

Then, on the Bengals’ third play of the third quarter, Jake Browning hit Ja’Marr Chase for a 76-yard touchdown and a 21-14 lead.

In the 2022 win at New Orleans, Burrow had a 19-yard run on the team’s final drive of the first half, but the Saints answered with a field goal. New Orleans added another field goal to start the second half, and the Bengals got a 15-yard touchdown pass from Burrow to Chase on their first possession of the third quarter.

Later in 2022, in Week 9 against the same Carolina Panthers, the Bengals scored a touchdown on a Mixon 12-yard reception from Burrow with 0:04 left in the first half. Carolina opened the second half with a touchdown drive, and Cincinnati tied it with a 14-yard touchdown run by Mixon for a 42-7 lead.

And in the 2021 season opener, Chase scored a 50-yard touchdown with 35 seconds left in the first half, and the Bengals opened the second half with an 11-play touchdown drive that Mixon capped with a 2-yard run.

But the Vikings had a legitimate possession before halftime even though they only had 35 seconds. They had all three timeouts and ran six plays.

The Bengals won this game at home 27-24 in overtime.

The last time we saw the Bengals double-dip like they did today was a home game against the Eagles in 2016.

Andy Dalton led a 12-play, 93-yard drive that ended with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Eifert two seconds before halftime.

Then the Bengals took the second-half kickoff and went 77 yards in eight plays, with Dalton hitting Brandon LaFell for an 8-yard touchdown and a 26-0 lead in a game they won 32-14.

Sunday’s double-dip was initiated by the fact that the Bengals not only won their first game of the season, but also their first coin toss, allowing them to defer and give themselves a chance to do something they eight Hadn’t done it for years.

Relief efforts continue in Asheville and western North Carolina, where a major disaster caused by Tropical Storm Helene has devastated communities, left roads impassable and thousands without power. There were only estimates of the extent of the destruction on Sunday evening; the full extent of the Helene devastation will probably only be known for some time.

How Helene influences the postal service and voting

Helene hit North Carolina just days after mail-in ballots were scheduled to go out to military voters and overseas voters, as well as anyone else who requested them.

The United States Postal Service in Asheville said in an automated message that Helene “could impact the processing, transportation and delivery of mail and packages. Please allow additional time for final delivery of your item.”
