Sheinbaum takes office as Mexico’s first female president | News

Nearly four months after her landslide election victory, Claudia Sheinbaum will be sworn in as Mexican president on Tuesday, becoming the first woman to lead the Latin American country at a time when it has been plagued by criminal violence.

The 62-year-old former mayor of Mexico City and ruling party heavyweight will take office in the presence of foreign dignitaries, including Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and US first lady Jill Biden.

“It’s time for women and transformation,” Sheinbaum has said repeatedly, in a country with a history of gender discrimination and violence where about 10 women or girls are murdered every day.

But having a female president is no guarantee of a greater focus on women’s rights, said Maria Fernanda Bozmoski, deputy director of the Adrienne Arsht Latin America Center at the U.S. think tank Atlantic Council.

“When we think about other female leaders in the region, that doesn’t necessarily mean that women’s issues are a priority,” she told AFP, noting that Sheinbaum also faced other pressing issues such as security, energy and foreign policy.

Sheinbaum will take the oath of office in Congress before a ceremony in Mexico City’s main square, officially becoming head of state of the most populous Spanish-speaking country with 129 million people.

One prominent figure who will be conspicuous by his absence is Spanish King Felipe VI, whom Sheinbaum refused to invite, accusing him of failing to acknowledge the damage caused by colonization.

In response, Spain announced it would boycott the inauguration despite its strong economic and historical ties to Mexico.

– Popular predecessor retires –

Sheinbaum, a trained scientist, won in June on a promise to continue the left-wing reform agenda of outgoing leader Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, a close ally.

Lopez Obrador is leaving the presidential palace after six years under the country’s one-term limit, although his approval rating hovers around 70 percent, largely thanks to his policies aimed at helping poorer Mexicans.

He leaves Sheinbaum to lead a nation where murders and kidnappings occur daily and where violent drug cartels control vast territories.

Since 2006, more than 450,000 people have been murdered here in rising criminal violence, much of it linked to drug trafficking and gangs.

While Sheinbaum has promised to stick with the outgoing president’s controversial “hugs not bullets” strategy and use social policy to fight crime at its root, experts expect some changes in her approach.

“It will be a modified version of hugs instead of bullets, more reliant on intelligence and therefore more effective at completing tasks,” said Professor Pamela Starr, a Mexico expert at the University of Southern California.

Such an approach by Sheinbaum when she was mayor of Mexico City “was very successful in reducing crime,” she said.

The new president must also deal with the fallout from a dispute over recently passed judicial reforms that will make Mexico the only country in the world to elect all judges by popular vote.

Lopez Obrador argued that the changes were necessary to clean up a “rotten” judiciary that serves the interests of the political and business elite.

The constitutional change, which critics argued would make it easier for politicians and organized crime to influence the courts, angered foreign investors and key trading partners the United States and Canada.

Nevertheless, experts believe that Sheinbaum will maintain good relations with whoever wins the US election on November 5th – especially if it is Democrat Kamala Harris, who would also be her country’s first female president.

While there will still be “certain tensions and tensions,” particularly around migration, the reality is that both countries recognize the importance of their relationship, Bozmoski said.

Sheinbaum has already proven to be “a strong leader” and will likely be “much more pragmatic, perhaps even less confrontational, than her predecessor,” she added.

Samsung’s “Galaxy Fold6 Special Edition” release date has leaked

Samsung’s “Galaxy Fold6 Special Edition” release date has leaked

There are rumors that Samsung’s slimmer, book-style foldable device will be the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition, and it should reportedly launch on September 25th. That obviously didn’t happen, but we have some news related to the launch. Perhaps.

A Korean retailer has apparently announced the pre-order and release period for the Samsung Galaxy Fold6 Special Edition – but not for the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition.

This could be a typo, the actual trade name of the device, or a complete invention. Keep this in mind as you read the rest, as the page in question is no longer accessible to us either.

In any case, it was apparently said that pre-orders for the device in Korea will begin on October 18th and end on October 24th, before the phone launches on October 25th. So maybe the September 25th leak gave the correct date, just not the month.

Of course, this only applies if it is a real leak from a retailer and not just a figment of the imagination. We’ll have to wait and see what it actually was.

The Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition (or whatever it ends up being called) is said to be larger (8-inch folding screen inside, 6.5-inch cover screen), slimmer (10.6 mm when folded) and better equipped (200 MP main camera). ) than the Galaxy Z Fold6, which was launched back in July. And yet it’s apparently only sold in Korea and China because the rest of the world doesn’t deserve these specs – what else can we learn from this strategy?

Celebrini, Gauthier and Hutson are among the top 12 rookies to watch in the NHL this season

Macklin Celebrini, the San Jose Sharks’ No. 1 pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, leads a group of talented rookies hoping to make an impact as the 2024-25 season begins Friday.

The Sharks finished last in the NHL last season and were ranked No. 1 for the first time. General manager Mike Grier said he believes San Jose’s offseason moves, including the signings of forwards Tyler Toffoli and Alexander Wennberg, as well as the Freeing two-time Stanley Cup winner Barclay Goodrow from the New York Rangers could create a good environment and structure for Celebrini on and off the ice.

“He wants to be the guy; he wants to have the puck on his stick the whole game,” Toffoli said of Celebrini. “He doesn’t wait for it to come to him. I think he does a really good job of being in really good spots and just knowing when to finish plays, when to strike and when to get it – [defensive] Zone, [offensive] Zone – he moves his feet and has the puck.

Here are 12 rookies to keep an eye on (in alphabetical order):

Football manager is making numerous changes for this year, including the inclusion of women’s football and a partnership with the Premier League.

The latest entry also marks a switch to the Unity engine as well as a new user interface and improved graphics.

FM25 is just the starting point for the next 20, 30 years of the studio,” said Miles Jacobson, studio head of Sports Interactive. “It is also the point where the world can see two of our multi-year projects come to fruition: the move to Unity Engine and the launch of women’s football.

“It’s a real sense of achievement for us to share our hard work with you, and we’re really looking forward to showing you more of the game in the weeks leading up to the game’s release.”

Due to the rework, some features from previous years didn’t make it, including touchline calls and the Create a Club and Versus modes.

International Management will also not be playable (except in the mobile version), but Sports Interactive promises it will return in a “much more feature-rich way” for release next year as part of the base game.

“We have dealt very intensively with international management FM and realized that what we wanted to deliver would not meet our original quality threshold,” Jacobson said in a blog earlier this month.

“Only 5.6% of all FM24 PC saves have used this mode, which we think reinforces our view that we need to get much, much better use of the experience. On console, that number is even lower.”

Football manager 25 will be released on November 26th on PC, Mac, PS5 and Xbox.

‘Pappachan Olivilanu’ actor Saiju Kurup (IANS interview) – Telangana Today

‘Pappachan Olivilanu’ actor Saiju Kurup (IANS interview) – Telangana Today

“Jai Mahendran” will debut on OTT platform Sony LIV on October 11, 2024.

Published Date – October 1, 2024, 8:56 AM

Malayalam actor Saiju Kurup

Mumbai: Malayalam actor Saiju Kurup, who is best known for his commendable films like ‘Malikappuram’, ‘Janamaithri’ and many others, opened up about his upcoming web series debut ‘Jai Mahendran’.

In a conversation with IANS, Saiju spoke about his character in the upcoming series, the genres to be explored in the web series and more.

You have always been a part of feature films and now you are debuting as a part of a web series. Did you feel a difference between the two mediums or was it the same for you?

Saiju said, “No, as actors we don’t see any difference because I have done short films, I have done films, I have worked on two episodes of a TV series. As actors we don’t really care because for us everything is the same. The only difference is that the budget is very low. If it’s a film, the budget is higher. If it is a web series the budget is higher, if it is a short film the budget is tight. So with this tight budget we can’t rent big cameras.”

“But if it is a web series or a film, we can rent the latest version of big cameras. So this is all for the technicians, but for us we are just actors, we only act in short films and here too. So for us everything is the same. But the good thing is that the web series is bigger because the budget is good and we get 3 to 3.5 hours of content. We can tell the story in such a short time,” he added.

Were there any challenges while playing the character Mahendran?

Saiju said, “Yes, because I don’t do homework for my characters. That’s why I never thought about doing homework and I don’t have that much time for it because I do back-to-back recordings. So I shot a film and two days later I went to Jai Mahendran’s location and started acting there. But I’m a director and a writer and an actor.”

“So I will do whatever he asks me to do. Okay, if you look at Jai Mahendran’s script, there are a lot of details in the script, for example: What is his mood in a particular scene? What was his previous scene like? So if a man comes up to me and says something, how will he react, or if it’s my dialogue, how will I repeat it? So they guide us, it makes an actor’s life very easy. I don’t know if it’s the same for everyone, but for me my life has been easy when the writers and directors tell me, and I don’t tell anyone how to do it, I watch them.”

“Whether it’s a director or a writer, when they explain the scene, I watch them at that time. What is their body language? How do I conduct the dialogue? Otherwise, what will happen is that if I start playing characters in every film, then you will see Saiju Kurup in every film. So how can I make Mahendran different?”

“That’s why I wanted to do Mahendran differently: If a writer is available on site, he can come and explain the scene. So he explained it to me, or when the director told me to explain the scene, he explained it to me. From this I get a lot of things that don’t belong to Saiju Kurup. If I had done it myself, I wouldn’t have recorded it. So that’s how I do it. So with Jai Mahendran and all the other films I have done, I did it with a very open mind without doing any work. For example, I went to the site and to get there you have to work, but I didn’t do any homework,” he said.

What did you have to unlearn for the web?

Saiju said, “There is nothing better than unlearning, because whatever I have learned is all good.” So if I had learned something bad, I would have had to unlearn it. But whatever I learned, whether I tried or learned unknowingly, those were all very good things and that would enhance my career and improve my acting skills that I have learned over the years. So I haven’t forgotten anything.”

How was your working experience with Suhasini Maniratnam?

Saiju said, “There was a lot of excitement when the producer immediately called me and told me that I had spoken to Suhasini Chechi. We call our sister Chechi, so I call her Chechi.” When Suhasini Chechi joined, I was very excited because in the late 80s I started watching films and at the same time I started watching TV. At that time, Suhasini Chechi was one of the top heroines in Malayalam and Tamil. When I watched Malayalam films, I always felt like she was my sister or my mother.”

“I used to feel this way. As we grew up watching her films, I was very excited to know that I would be sharing screen space with her and it was a very good experience. She is a very sober and very good sister…she also supported me a lot and yes, she did a good job too,” he said.

Aside from all the films you’ve done, which one stands out in your mind so far and why?

Saiju said, “This was the character in my first film. In the first half, I was negative while playing the hero in this film. In the second half, I played “Mayookham” which means Surya Kiran. In Sanskrit it is called Surya Kiran, so I played a positive character in the second half. I feel the need to find such a character in real life and because it was my debut film, it is very close to my heart.”

“So, the experience of this film, when I learned the acting of the film or the location, I learned about the filmmaking, the track, the boom, the crane, I learned all of that.” So you won’t have that experience because it’s over for the first time. That’s why I feel like this character is very close to my heart,” he said.

What types of roles or genres do you plan to explore online?

“I want to try every genre because right now in the Malayalam industry, I don’t have a particular image that this person is suitable for comedy, action or a serious role. I don’t have this picture. So the filmmakers and writers fit me into different genres. By God’s grace this is happening.”

Can you tell us about your upcoming film Anand Sreebala?

Saiju said, “Yes, I can tell you. There is a great filmmaker Vinayan Sir, his son Vishnu Vinay is directing the film. I had a film Malikappuram 1.5 years ago which was a huge blockbuster. The writer, Abhilash Pillai is also the writer of this film. I play a DYSP character, the deputy superintendent of police.”

“The protagonist is played by an actor named Arjun Ashokan. It’s a murder mystery, and you know that if you say anything about a murder mystery, the suspense will go away. That’s why I won’t say anything about it. It will be released very soon, the film is very well made, we are keeping our fingers crossed too. Let’s see.”

What made you say yes to the show Jai Mahendran?

He said: “First of all the attraction was Sony LIV because I think all Malaysians who have the platform, everyone follows it, in Kerala it is very popular, in South India it is everywhere and there we are.” Speaking of Malayalam web series , it’s everywhere, but if there’s content on Sony LIV, it’ll be good… there’s an atmosphere like this. So there is a film called Antakshari. If you haven’t seen it yet, definitely check it out. It’s a crime thriller, it’s a very good film… there’s a police officer who likes to play ‘Antakshari’, so that’s how the film goes. Apart from this, Sony LIV is the first web series and it is a big deal to star in the Sony LIV web series.”

“We are starring in the first web series on this platform, which is a big deal. Rahul Rijin Nair, the writer of the web series, and Srikanth Mohan. Rahul Rijin Nair is already a national and state award-winning director and his first directorial is Srikanth Mohan. So these two people are coming for this web series. I have already made a film with them. I think it was 2017 or 2018, so I already did it.”

“I have a lot of confidence in this team and the plot of this film, the plot of ‘Jai Mahendran’, the plot in one line, they had already told me about it, then comes the big exciting news that Sony is LIV. “I will streaming that. Wow! 75 percent of people were convinced and I already know this team. I worked with them. I’ve seen their other films and there was no reason why I didn’t tell them. There was no reason to reject them,” Saiju said.

What type of content do you like to watch in your free time?

Saiju said, “Basically, I don’t have any particular genre where I would watch a thriller film of that genre in my free time. But I watch an entertaining film, as if we can provide entertainment to the audience with different feelings. We can make them laugh, we can scare them. When you make a thriller film, they will feel the thrill and will be at the edge of their seats. You can entertain them this way. You can entertain them by making them cry, so ultimately we want to entertain every emotion. I don’t know how many times I have watched ‘Andaz Apna Apna’, I like such films.”

“Now I like films like ‘Baazigar’ or ‘Darr’, now I have seen ‘Mirzapur’, I have seen it many times. So there is no specific genre, but if we get entertainment, that’s fine. Now I saw “Animal”, I really liked it. Although there is a lot of violence, it is a movie, watch it as a movie. Why do you take it to heart? It’s a movie, it’s made for your entertainment, watch it and be entertained, otherwise you shouldn’t have done this or that. So it doesn’t matter,” concluded Saiju.

“Jai Mahendran” will debut on OTT platform Sony LIV on October 11, 2024. The series stars Saiju Kurup, Miya George, Suhasini Maniratnam, Rahul Riji Nair, Sidhartha Siva, Suresh Krishna and Maniyanpilla Raju.

The series was produced by First Print Studios and directed by Srikanth Mohan.

The Weeknd and Playboi Carti release “Timeless” music video

The Weeknd and Playboi Carti release “Timeless” music video

The Weeknd and Playboi Carti reunited and released the music video for their latest collaboration, “Timeless,” which features the two singing the lyrics from a dark warehouse surrounded by half-naked women.

“City on fire when I’m comin’ home/Fill up the sky, I fill up the Dome/They’ll play it one day, it’s a hell of a show,” the Weeknd sings on the track. “But it will hurt because we did it first”

In the Gunner Stahl and LouieKnows-directed video, Weeknd and Playboi Carti rock out in all black and, in Carti’s case, an Allen Iverson leotard, as they sing the track in front of a group of dancers.

In the self-referential lyrics, the two also praise Pharrell Williams, who produced the song, with the line: “Feel like Skateboard P, BBC Boys on the Creep/Feel like it’s ’03, Neptune Drum with a Beam.”

The single marks The Weeknd’s second track Hurry up tomorrow Album that follows “Dancing in the Flames,” which was released earlier this month. The new record will follow in 2020 After hours and 2022 Dawn FM for the conclusion of the album trio.

“Yesterday was fourteen years ago… We held our breath and fell into a shimmering sea in the late hours of the night… We tried to cleanse the wounds with tunes and lights, a bulletproof bandage to protect what lies beneath,” says a trailer announcement for the album. “In a place where the seasons never changed and where time ceased to exist. But therein lies the problem.”

On trend

“Today has felt like an endless twist, twisting the truth over and over again, immune to the vertigo, numb to the nausea. What lies beneath – screams silently,” the trailer continued.

“Timeless” also reunites Carti and The Weeknd after she joined Madonna for “Popular.” The idol in 2023. The couple debuted “Timeless” during the Weeknd’s One Night Only show in São Paulo earlier this month.

What we learned from Monday’s doubleheader

What we learned from Monday’s doubleheader

FULL BOX SCORE

  1. The Titans fight against adversity to get their first win. With zero wins through the first three weeks, Tennessee headed to humid Miami with one desperate goal: to win the game. They didn’t get off to a good start and had already made a few false starts before Will Levis threw possession over one Emmanuel Ogbah interception, and it seemed like it would only get more difficult when Levis left the game with a shoulder injury. But Bricklayer RudolphHis experience helped steady the ship and keep the Titans’ offense afloat before focusing on their ground game to lead them to victory. Defensively, the Titans played an outstanding game, stifling Mike McDaniel’s offense, forcing a turnover and five three-and-outs and holding the Dolphins to fewer than 200 yards of offense on the night. It wasn’t the cleanest operation – Tennessee missed eight accepted penalties for 69 penalty yards – but it was enough to leave with a much-needed first win for coach Brian Callahan, who can tout his team’s toughness after watching them has won the test Fight and always collect enough points to achieve victory.
  2. Miami’s offense is stuck in the mud. The Dolphins entered Week 4 without holding a lead for a single second of regulation through three games. At least on paper, it looked like they might finally break through against the Titans in Week 4, but we were wrong. When choosing the veteran Tyler HuntleyMiami started its third different starting quarterback in four games and found it was going to be just as difficult as it was in last week’s ugly loss to Seattle, when they entered the fourth quarter with just 84 total yards on offense. The Dolphins gained just seven yards as a team in the third quarter and trudged into the final period with no signs of ever finding a rhythm before the end of the game. They did, pulling off an 11-play, 70-yard touchdown drive, but it took them 7:09 and a lot of effort. Gone are the days of the Dolphins’ explosive offense that you just can’t feel comfortable without Tua Tagovailoa and he finds it difficult to make even the simple plays.
  3. Bill Callahan’s offensive line is starting to take shape. On a night where Tennessee lost its starting quarterback in the first quarter, the Titans needed the running game to carry the load, a reality their staff didn’t shy away from. The Titans ran the ball on 64.5% of their offensive snaps, gained 142 yards on the ground and utilized a blocking system that continually created running lanes for them Tyjae spears And Tony Pollard. The latter led the way with an average of 4 yards per carry on 22 attempts, but both served their purpose and each found the end zone, taking a lot of responsibility off Rudolph’s shoulders. It’s no surprise that Rudolph gave credit to the ground game in his postgame interview, as it led them to a road win and helped the Titans gain possession (34:52 to 25:08) and pull away. And after a rocky start that included a few false starts and a holding penalty, it was very encouraging to see this unit settle in and execute consistently. That bodes well for a Tennessee team that desperately needed a reason to believe after three tough weeks to start the season.

Insight into next-gen Titans-Dolphins stats (via NFL Pro): The Titans’ run defense halted Miami’s designed rushing attempts on Monday night, limiting the Dolphins’ ball carriers to 72 yards on 26 designed carries, including -43 rushing yards above expectations, the seventh-lowest mark by a defense in a game this season.

NFL Research: The Dolphins are the first team to never have a lead in the first four games of a season since the Browns finished 0-16 in 2017. In the team’s Week 1 win over the Jaguars, the Dolphins scored the game-winning field goal with no time left.

For better or worse, O’Connell’s aggressiveness was based on faith

For better or worse, O’Connell’s aggressiveness was based on faith

GREEN BAY – The Minnesota Vikings’ victory over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday brought a wide range of emotions for purple-loving spectators, from the thrill of the first half to the terror of a near meltdown in the second half .

When everyone wakes up Monday morning and the Vikings are 4-0, nerves will have calmed down and the frustration of not putting the Packers away will be in the rearview mirror, but it’s worth spending some time on the second half of the 31-29 win because of what it says about the way head coach Kevin O’Connell approaches his team.

As the Vikings blew a 28-7 first-half lead in the second half, there were several instances where O’Connell could have pulled the emergency brake and tried to run out the clock through ground play, screens and short passes. Instead, he still leaned on the pass button, which kept getting the Vikings into trouble.

The first time we saw the duality of O’Connell’s aggressive playing style was at the start of the second half. After forcing a Green Bay punt early in the third quarter, quarterback Sam Darnold hit Jordan Addison for a 25-yard gain on a third-and-10 to set up a potential stab in the back. Then Darnold scrambled for a first down and running back Aaron Jones surged forward for a 9-yard gain, setting up the Vikings to put the game away.

On second-and-1 and in field goal position, it would have made sense to run the ball again and have sure-footed kicker Will Reichard give them at least a 31-7 lead. Instead of hiding and taking the three extra points, the Vikings chose a pass and Darnold threw an interception, marking the second time in four games that he has thrown a red-zone pick with the opportunity to run away from an opponent (the others was vs. San Francisco).

The Vikings then had two more drives in the third quarter and only needed 5:18 minutes, which opened the door for the Packers to take off. Early in the fourth quarter, QB Jordan Love found his groove and led an 89-yard touchdown drive that lasted just 3:55, cutting the deficit to two points.

Again, O’Connell could have tried to waste time with his running backs or his screen game, but he made consecutive passes. The first time, Darnold slipped and twisted his feet, and the second time he was strip-sacked. Two games later, the Packers were within six points.

At this point, the head coach stuck to his strategy instead of slowing down. With 10:16 left in the fourth quarter, Darnold hit Justin Jefferson for a 17-yard pass on the first play of the drive. He then completed a short pass to Josh Oliver and found Jefferson again over the middle for a 27-yard gain.

When the dust settled, the Vikings scored a field goal that cut the lead to two points.

But we weren’t done with the head coach’s big swing mentality. After a stunning catch by Jefferson down the sideline, the Vikings were able to kick a field goal and take a 12-point lead with 2:21 to play. O’Connell went for fourth down and came up short, giving the Packers one last gasp.

Ultimately, Green Bay scored again and extended the lead to two points, but failed to convert an onside kick, giving the Vikings the win.

After the win, O’Connell said his mindset wasn’t so much about game management theory, but about sending a message to his players.

“I just want our guys to understand that I believe in them,” O’Connell said. “I want our guys to know that I’m going to be aggressive. I have nothing but confidence in the 11 guys in every phase of our team going out in those moments.”

Since the start of the season, O’Connell has expressed his confidence in tangible ways, be it by scoring his first fourth down of the season in the red zone and a touchdown, or by throwing a bomb from the Vikings’ 3-yard line and was rewarded with a 97-yard touchdown.

The Packers almost took advantage of some of the fumbles amid O’Connell’s bouts of aggression, but in the biggest moment of the game – the reaction to taking a nine-point lead late – Darnold once again proved his head coach right by trusting him.

“I’m just leaning on our quarterback and our guys in that group to get a really good drive right there,” O’Connell said. “I would have liked to get seven, but our boys executed critically and were able to react in the moment after losing a significant lead and then fighting back. I think this team is exactly what I want. I think they’re made of the right stuff and we’ll just keep playing.”

The more confidence Darnold shows in pressure situations, the more trust he will gain from O’Connell and the entire team. Aaron Jones described the way Darnold led them from the huddle in the fourth quarter when things seemed to be falling apart.

“He let everyone know, ‘Hey, one play at a time, we have to have it now,'” Jones said. “He said, ‘If you have any questions, ask me.’ He did a great job ordering that.”

Darnold finished the game with another great stat line: 20 of 28 for 275 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.

“I think you have to have that [aggressive] mindset,” Darnold said. “You can’t think about what might happen or what has happened when they come back. You always have to keep the attitude of taking one step before the other. As long as we continue to have that mindset on offense as a whole team, I think we’ll be fine.”

While the outside world maintains that the Vikings are the NFL’s biggest “surprise” team, O’Connell revealed last week that he had told the team before the season that his projection for them was much higher, so no success is likely to come as a shock to them.

“I just think it’s consistent with what I’ve been talking about,” O’Connell said. “Long before the first win came, the second, third or fourth win came… I just say the obvious in the locker room and confirm to them that I believe in them, that I love them and that we will ride together and we will stay aggressive and be smart at the same time. There’s always a line there, but I’m really proud of our guys.”

There is actually a line. No matter how much he believes in the team, the decisions in the future have to become more pragmatic and less symbolic.

On the other hand, this attitude helped the Vikings to 4-0. Relying on Darnold has gotten them to 4-0. They are now in the driver’s seat of the NFC, traveling to London to play the New York Jets.

“Nothing matters except the next thing. “It’s a hell of a challenge to go to London and play against a really good football team,” said O’Connell.
