Couple orders boxes from Walmart without being prepared for delivery

Couple orders boxes from Walmart without being prepared for delivery

A couple recently found themselves at the center of a bizarre but hilarious delivery situation that has since garnered widespread attention on TikTok.

When customers ordered multiple boxes from Walmart, they were amazed when they received them packed in giant square boxes and also completely wrapped in large plastic bubble wrap. The amusing ordeal prompted the couple to share their experience on the platform at @madebyjewel, which garnered over 767,000 views and countless amused comments.

The video captured the absurdity of the over-packaging: One half of the couple, a man, walked viewers online through the oversized delivery boxes and Walmart’s liberal use of bubble wrap for the merely flat boxes. The humorous juxtaposition of the contents versus the size of the packaging resonated with TikTok users, who found the situation both ridiculous and confusing.

Newsweek reached out to Walmart for comment on the unusual delivery, which has since gone viral online. Jeffrey Essary, who works in global communications at Walmart, responded with a mix of candor and humor, confirming that the company was aware of the situation via social media.

“We found out about the situation through TikTok and immediately began figuring out what was happening on our end and on the client’s end,” Essary said Newsweek. “We focused on how to take care of the customer and give them the best experience, and we tried to solve the problem on the backend so that it doesn’t happen again in the future.”

Essary, who is based in Arkansas, emphasized Walmart’s appreciation for customers who brought the issue and material waste to Walmart’s attention, and said its customer care team is actively addressing the matter.

“Our customer care team is working to make things right with the customer,” he said. “It’s obviously not the optimal experience we would want for them, but we feel like we’ve done everything necessary on our end to make sure that doesn’t happen in the future.”

Essary also noted the positive response to the video, emphasizing how many appreciated the lighthearted nature of the incident.

“It was nice to see a positive response to a peculiar situation there and we are pleased that the customer brought it to our attention,” he added.

Customers’ humorous documentation of the delivery sparked a flood of amused comments.

“I see two boxes for the price of one plus packing materials,” said one viewer.

Another added: “Imagine the delivery man’s relief when he picked up the first box.”

A third viewer shared: “48 boxes AAAAAND bubbles? Win!”

Newsweek contacted @madebyjewels for more information about TikTok.

Jimmy Carter reaches his 100th birthday after 19 months of hospice care

Jimmy Carter reaches his 100th birthday after 19 months of hospice care

Jimmy Carter has turned 100, reaching a once-unthinkable milestone more than 19 months after entering hospice care.

The 39th President of the United States, the oldest living former president and longest-living president in U.S. history, has certainly made the most of the past century.

Whether through his military service, his foreign policy contributions as president, his diplomatic efforts, his Sunday school teaching or his volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity well into his 90s, Carter always sought to make a meaningful impact.

“I only had one life to live, and I wanted to live it as a civilian, with potentially broader opportunities for varied public service,” he wrote in his 2010 memoir: White House Diary.

Carter, who has been cared for in the hospice since February 2023, is currently hoping to achieve one last goal before he dies. According to his grandson Jason Carter, the former president recently stated, “I’m just trying to vote for Kamala Harris,” the newspaper reports Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Although he made a rare public appearance at his late wife Rosalynn Carter’s funeral last November, Carter is “physically limited” and spends his time at home with his loved ones.

“This is an important part of his faith journey that you can’t experience at any other time in your life except at the very end,” Jason told PEOPLE last September, a few months after his grandfather entered hospice care . “In that respect, I think this was a really meaningful time for him, and it was a really contemplative time for him.”

In September, several stars and their loved ones gathered in Atlanta for a tribute concert organized in honor of the former president’s milestone birthday.

The event, titled “Jimmy Carter 100: A Celebration in Song,” featured Chuck Leavell, D-Nice, Drive-By Truckers, Eric Church, GROUPLOVE, Maren Morris, The War And Treaty and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chamber Choir.

Jason, who chairs the Carter Center, sat down with PEOPLE at the concert to get an update on his grandfather’s health.

“I mean, he’s been in hospice for over 19 months now and his physical condition is severely weakened and he can’t do much on his own anymore,” Jason told PEOPLE. “But he’s emotionally invested and still having experiences and laughing and loving.”

As part of his birthday celebration on October 1, the tribute concert will be broadcast on Georgia Public Broadcasting, where President Carter is expected to watch.

Question for Eric: Sister only calls when she needs money, now my niece is calling too

Question for Eric: Sister only calls when she needs money, now my niece is calling too

DEAR ERIC: I’m not close to my sister. Over the years there was little contact except when she needed money. She and two of her adult daughters have called asking for money, one more than once. I want to keep peace in the family, that’s why I gave it to them. They said they would pay it back. Not only did they not do this, they also stopped all communication. I’ve never gotten any pictures of her grandchildren, no new little notes about her daily life.

A daughter who hadn’t asked for money called and asked us to dinner. We had a nice time, but I know that soon she will ask why we don’t all get together. Can I tell her something about the money, about whether she doesn’t care about us or not? She always ignored me too.

– Frustrated sister

DEAR SISTER: It’s difficult when you want to set a boundary, but to do so completely would be to put someone else’s business on the street. However, you are right if you don’t want to socialize until your sister and her only daughter make amends.

If the other daughter inquires about a group meeting, tell her that you would like to do it, but you and her mother and sister have some personal things that need to be taken care of first. This could also be a good opportunity to talk about how important the contact is to you, how grateful you are that she reached out, and how it felt when you were ignored. It doesn’t have to be a dramatic scene. But it’s important to put everything on the table so you don’t start holding a grudge against her too.

***

DEAR ERIC: Regarding the sleepless spouse: As a therapist who treats insomnia, it is actually recommended that if you cannot fall asleep in bed within 20 minutes, you go to another quiet room to read before settling down feeling tired enough to sleep. When you’re awake in bed, your brain associates bed with being awake rather than sleeping. So he should go. However, he should also have an examination to diagnose and treat the cause of the insomnia. Meanwhile, Sleepless can use an eye mask, soft earplugs, and a white noise machine.

– sleep researcher

DEAR SLEEP STUDY: Thank you for these additions! Hopefully both the letter writer and her husband can improve their sleep quality.

***

DEAR ERIC: You should have advised the sleepless wife whose husband suffered from insomnia and made her read in bed to buy her husband a pill! Many books are free to download, the cost of purchasing a book is less than purchasing a paperback, and libraries often offer free downloads. There is no need to turn pages, the brightness of the screen can be adjusted, and if she gets a case, that side of the case can be held upright to further protect her from the light of the tablet.

– E-Sleeper

DEAR E-SLEEPER: Sometimes the simplest solution is the best. You know, you’d think that option would have come to mind first, given how much time I’ve spent encouraging people to read my books in print, audio, or, yes, e-mail. Reader to read. Luckily, many of you have noticed. Thanks for writing!

I also recommend that the man try audio books with headphones that don’t emit sound, otherwise he could be left in the dark. But – if you’re my publisher, wear earmuffs for this – I don’t recommend people read my books alongside sleeping partners. I’m told they tend to make you laugh out loud.

WATCH LIVE: Walz and Vance meet in the vice president debate

WATCH LIVE: Walz and Vance meet in the vice president debate

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Ohio Sen. JD Vance will face off in a vice presidential debate on Tuesday.

The only vice presidential debate of the season follows two presidential debates featuring three major party candidates. Former President Trump edged out President Biden in the first debate in June, sparking a reckoning in the Democratic Party that led to Biden ending his re-election campaign. Vice President Harris quickly clinched the Democratic nomination and was widely seen as the winner against Trump in the second presidential debate last month.

While vice-presidential debates don’t draw the same crowd as clashes between the party’s headliners, they have created memorable moments — some of them intentional, like Sen. Lloyd Benson’s “You’re no Jack Kennedy” slam against then-Sen. Dan Quayle in 1988, and some not, like the fly that briefly eclipsed Vice President Pence in 2020.

The CBS-moderated debate begins at 9 p.m. Eastern Time. You can watch NPR’s coverage and simulcast of the debate below.

Tropical Storm Kirk, 4 other systems monitored

Tropical Storm Kirk, 4 other systems monitored

Although National Hurricane Center forecasters are tracking five separate systems in the Atlantic Ocean, including newly formed Tropical Storm Kirk, only one is of real concern for the United States and the storm-ravaged Southeast.

The hurricane center most likely to hit the United States is in the Caribbean Sea, the hurricane center said Monday. A “major low pressure area” in the ocean is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms, and environmental conditions appear to be conducive to the gradual development of the system.

The center said: “In a few days, a tropical depression could form while the system is over the southern Gulf of Mexico or the northwestern Caribbean Sea.”

Babysitter, 13, accused of stabbing sister, 7: reports

Babysitter, 13, accused of stabbing sister, 7: reports

A 13-year-old girl in Taylor, Michigan is reportedly facing murder charges after allegedly stabbing her 7-year-old sister while she was babysitting.

On Saturday, September 28, around 1 p.m. local time, the Taylor Police Department responded to reports of a possible knife attack, stations including WXYZ, FOX 2 Detroit and CBS Detroit reported.

Officers responded to the incident in the area of Telegraph and Chestnut and the seven-year-old was taken to a local hospital where she later died from her injuries Detroit News.

“Preliminary investigation indicates that the victim’s injuries were allegedly caused by her 13-year-old sister,” police said, according to the media outlet. Officials have not released the identity of the affected family.

FOX 2 Detroit, citing the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, reported that the 13-year-old now faces multiple charges, including first-degree premeditated murder, aggravated murder and first-degree child abuse.

The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office and Taylor Police did not immediately respond when contacted by PEOPLE.

According to FOX 2 Detroit, the girls’ parents left them at home around 11:15 a.m. that day and the older sister had to babysit. Detective Zachary DiGiacomo said the argument stemmed from “a note posted in the bathroom” about “the toilet flushing,” the outlet reported.

He said the victim – who was reportedly stabbed multiple times with a butcher knife and a hunting knife – had “over ten stab wounds from his stomach to his head to his neck,” FOX 2 Detroit explained.

“All I can say is it’s shocking and very tragic,” the official added, according to the outlet.

DiGiacomo did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

According to WXYZ, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said the 13-year-old will not be tried as an adult in the case and will remain in the juvenile system due to her age.

“The state would have seven years until her mandatory release at age 21 to diagnose, treat and rehabilitate her. Hopefully then she wouldn’t pose a danger to others. While this is a difficult decision given these facts, it is the right decision in this case,” Worthy said, according to the outlet.

“There is absolutely no doubt that the facts in this case are terrible. “It is beyond disturbing that the suspect responsible for the stabbing death of her seven-year-old sister is thirteen years old,” Wayne also said, according to CBS Detroit.

According to FOX 2 Detroit, Detective DiGiacomo claimed that the parents told police that the sisters had just had “normal sibling arguments” before. “As a child, you fight with your siblings all the time, but it doesn’t lead to this,” he said.

“She was very calm and just showed no emotion,” he also said of the charges against the older sister, according to the outlet.

Neighbor Julie Pagoto paid tribute to the victim, calling her the “sweetest little girl,” according to WXYZ.

“It was just a very tragic day, a very tragic day for us,” Pagoto said, according to the outlet. “She used to walk her bike up and down the street every day, stopping and talking to the neighbors.”

5 actionable steps to prevent GenAI data leaks without completely blocking AI usage

5 actionable steps to prevent GenAI data leaks without completely blocking AI usage

Oct 01, 2024The Hacker NewsGenerative AI / data protection

Since its inception, generative AI has revolutionized business productivity. GenAI tools enable faster and more effective software development, financial analysis, business planning and customer engagement. However, this business agility comes with significant risks, particularly the potential for loss of sensitive data. As companies try to balance productivity gains with security concerns, many have been forced to choose between unrestricted use of GenAI or a complete ban.

A new e-guide from LayerX titled “5 Actionable Steps to Prevent Data Leakage Using Generative AI Tools” aims to help companies overcome the challenges of GenAI use in the workplace. The guide provides practical steps for security managers to protect sensitive corporate data while leveraging the productivity benefits of GenAI tools like ChatGPT. This approach is intended to enable companies to find the right balance between innovation and security.

Why worry about ChatGPT?

The e-guide addresses growing concerns that unrestricted GenAI use could lead to inadvertent data disclosure. This was evident, for example, in incidents such as the Samsung data leak. In this case, employees accidentally exposed proprietary code while using ChatGPT, resulting in a complete ban on GenAI tools within the company. Such incidents highlight the need for companies to develop robust policies and controls to mitigate the risks associated with GenAI.

Our understanding of the risk is not just anecdotal. According to a study by LayerX Security:

  • 15% of enterprise users have inserted data into GenAI tools.
  • 6% of enterprise users have inserted sensitive Data such as source code, PII, or sensitive organizational information in GenAI tools.
  • Of the top 5% of GenAI users, who are the most intensive users, a full 50% are involved in research and development.
  • Source code is the primary type of sensitive data exposed, accounting for 31% of exposed data

Important steps for security managers

What can security managers do to enable the use of GenAI without exposing the organization to the risk of data exfiltration? Key highlights of the e-guide include the following steps:

  1. Mapping AI usage in the organization – Start by understanding what you need to protect. Determine who is using GenAI tools, how and for what purposes, and what types of data are being disclosed. This will be the basis of an effective risk management strategy.
  2. Restricting personal accounts – Next, take advantage of the protection that GenAI tools provide. GenAI corporate accounts offer built-in security measures that can significantly reduce the risk of sensitive data loss. These include restrictions on data use for training purposes, data retention restrictions, account sharing restrictions, anonymization, and more. Note that this requires enforcing the use of non-personal accounts when using GenAI (which requires a proprietary tool).
  3. Prompt user – The third step is to use the power of your own employees. Simple reminder messages displayed when using GenAI tools help raise employees’ awareness of the potential consequences of their actions and company policies. This can effectively reduce risky behavior.
  4. Block entry of sensitive information – Now is the time to introduce advanced technology. Implement automated controls that limit the entry of large amounts of sensitive data into GenAI tools. This is particularly effective at preventing employees from sharing source code, customer information, PII, financial data, and more.
  5. Limitation of GenAI browser extensions – Finally, prevent the risk of browser extensions. Automatically manage and classify AI browser extensions by risk to prevent unauthorized access to sensitive corporate data.

To fully realize the productivity benefits of generative AI, companies must find a balance between productivity and security. Therefore, GenAI security cannot be a binary decision about whether to allow or block all AI activities. Rather, a more nuanced and fine-tuned approach will enable companies to reap the business benefits without putting the organization at risk. For security managers, this is the path to becoming an important business partner and enabler.

Download the guide to learn how you can easily implement these steps right away.
