Governor Ron DeSantis provides update on Helene’s recovery: “There is still a lot of work to be done”

Governor Ron DeSantis provides update on Helene’s recovery: “There is still a lot of work to be done”

Gov. Ron DeSantis provided an update on Florida’s recovery from Hurricane Helene Tuesday afternoon, saying there is still “a lot of work to be done.”

In a news conference Tuesday afternoon in the Big Bend community of Horseshoe Beach, the governor praised state officials’ efforts to assess the damage, provide resources for affected families and reopen roads.

“We dealt with Ian quickly. We made quick work of Idalia. We got Helene done quicker,” Gov. DeSantis said when discussing the state’s response to the storm.

READ: According to Moody’s, the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene could cost up to $34 billion

Despite these efforts, the governor emphasized that there is still a long road ahead, particularly in the hardest-hit areas along the Gulf Coast, and called on the federal government to accelerate assistance.

“The bureaucracy needs to work to get these things done as quickly as possible,” said Governor DeSantis. “We know it was a bad storm and caused damage, so just get it done.”

Get involved: How you can help the devastated communities of Hurricane Helene

As of Tuesday morning, about 49,000 Florida residents were still without power. More than 2.3 million homes and businesses have returned to service.

The state has also activated the Florida Disaster Fund to provide support to those affected by the storm. To donate, click here.

Israeli soldiers raid Al Jazeera’s offices in Ramallah and order them to close

Israeli soldiers raid Al Jazeera’s offices in Ramallah and order them to close

CNN

The Israeli military searched Al Jazeera’s office in Ramallah in the occupied West Bank and ordered it closed, the broadcaster said.

Al Jazeera broadcast live footage early Sunday of Israeli soldiers entering its offices in Ramallah and kept the reactions of bureau chief Walid Omary and staff live on air.

During the video broadcast by Al Jazeera, a soldier can be heard informing Omar of a military order to close Al Jazeera’s office for 45 days.

When Omary read the military order given to him, he said employees only had ten minutes to take their personal belongings and cameras and leave the office.

When Omary asked the Israeli soldiers why the office was being closed, he was told that the reason was stated in the written military order.

A security guard on duty at the time told CNN that the soldiers used explosives to breach the building’s entrance.

“My eyes were heavy and I was almost asleep when I suddenly saw them breaking open the main door,” Abu Amer said. “I stood up to see what they were doing. They dropped the first bomb and then the second.”

“I tried to escape to the stairs and get some distance from them. I was so scared.”

Al Jazeera’s office in Ramallah has been in operation for decades. This became even more important for the network after Israel closed its Jerusalem office and confiscated some of its communications equipment in May. This led to condemnation from the United Nations and human rights groups over Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s alleged actions to restrict press freedom.

After Al Jazeera staff left the office in Ramallah, live footage showed Omary and others outside on the street while the journalist said soldiers had taken over the office and confiscated materials.

Shortly afterwards, as Israeli soldiers approached Omary, the live video feed was interrupted and Omary could be heard saying that soldiers had taken away the camera and broadcast equipment the team had been using.

On site, CNN found significant damage to the exterior and interior of the City Center building, which also houses several stores and other offices. Several steps leading to the building were damaged and tiles were missing, while the main door was completely missing.

The entrance to the Al Jazeera workroom was completely closed with iron doors, which the security guard told CNN had been installed by the Israeli military. Three surveillance cameras were also missing after they were confiscated by Israeli soldiers.

The Israeli military said it began enforcing the order to close the offices after an intelligence analysis concluded they were being used to “foment terror” and “support terrorist activities.”

Al Jazeera strongly rejected this allegation in a statement and condemned the “unfounded accusations” that the Israeli authorities had committed a “criminal act.”

“The raid on the office and the seizure of our equipment is not only an attack on Al Jazeera, but also an affront to press freedom and the principles of journalism,” the broadcaster said in a statement.

Three surveillance cameras were seized by Israeli soldiers from Al Jazeera offices in Ramallah in the occupied West Bank.

The Foreign Press Association (FPA), which represents the foreign press in Israel and the Palestinian territories, said it was “deeply concerned” by an “escalation that threatens press freedom.” The FPA called on the Israeli government to reconsider the decision.

The Israeli government has long complained about Al Jazeera’s activities, alleging anti-Israel bias and accusing the network of being a “mouthpiece of Hamas.”

The Qatar-based news channel, which has reported on the ground about Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza, denies this. Since the Gaza offensive began following the October 7 attacks, several of its journalists have been killed or injured.

Love fraudster ordered to pay £32,000 back to victim

Love fraudster ordered to pay £32,000 back to victim

A fraudster who tricked a woman he met on a dating app into handing over her savings has been ordered to pay back £32,000 to the victim.

Kye Hughes, of Rochester, told her he was a musician and invested in luxury watches for extra money, and suggested she would double her money if she did the same.

Kent Police said the 35-year-old received thousands of pounds from her victim, who believed it was a legitimate scheme and asked for more money, promising a return on her investment which never materialized came.

The woman reported the fraud to police and Hughes was arrested in 2019.

According to Kent Police, he was sentenced to three years and four months in prison at Maidstone Crown Court in October 2023 for fraud by false representation and money laundering.

At a further hearing at the same court on September 27 this year, he was ordered to pay back £32,144 to the victim by December 24 or face a further 12 months in prison.

Kent Police Detective Inspector David Godfrey said: “Our work does not end with sentencing – we will always do everything we can to return as much money as possible to victims.”

“In this case, the woman was heartbroken and in great financial distress after being cheated out of her savings. I hope the compensation from the confiscation order will help her overcome this ordeal.”

Adrian Foster, chief prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) Proceeds of Crime Unit, said: “Love fraud is a cruel deception that exploits the unique trust and vulnerability that exists in intimate relationships.”

“Kye Hughes manipulated the victim, stole from her, threatened her, and left her in debt and unimaginable stress.”

From 2019 to 2024, £450 million was recovered from convicted criminals through CPS confiscation orders, including £88 million returned to crime victims, a CPS spokesperson added.

Eric Adams slams alleged collusion between government and mainstream media, asks judge for ‘consequences’

Eric Adams slams alleged collusion between government and mainstream media, asks judge for ‘consequences’

Lawyers for embattled New York Mayor Eric Adams are calling for sanctions against the Justice Department, which they accuse of illegally leaking information about its investigation into the Big Apple boss to the mainstream media.

His lawyers wrote that the leaks had been going on for about a year, up until the day before the charges became public knowledge, when sources confirmed the charges to media outlets, including Fox News.

“In fact, the day before the indictment was unsealed, the New York Times reported – and even before the mayor’s lawyer was informed of the indictment – that the mayor had been indicted as part of a federal corruption investigation, people familiar with the matter said, ‘and that.’ ‘[f]“Prosecutors were expected to provide additional details on Thursday,” Adams attorney Avi Perry wrote in court documents released Tuesday.

Mayor Eric Adams and attorney Alex Spiro speak to the media outside a federal courthouse in New York City on September 27, 2024.

Hours before the Times report, Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, whose district includes parts of New York City, called on Adams to resign.

New York Mayor Eric Adams promises to govern, not resign

Because of the secret nature of the grand jury process, only a handful of people could have known about the indictment against the mayor before it was overturned last week, Perry wrote. These include the members of the grand jury itself, the court staff and the Justice Department prosecutors.

“But of that, only the prosecution team was aware of the government’s plan to provide more details the next day (as it did in a self-congratulatory press conference),” Perry continued. “It is therefore clear that the public prosecutor’s office is responsible for the leak.”

They are demanding a hearing on the alleged misconduct and appropriate consequences in order to achieve the long-term dismissal of the charges.

Adams faces up to 45 years in prison if convicted on all counts in an indictment that experts are calling an “opening salvo.” Since the investigation against a number of city hall employees and campaign workers is ongoing, there could be further charges.

Adams’ team repeatedly asked prosecutors to “stop the leaks” to no avail, the filing said. They are now asking the court to hold a hearing on the matter.

The mayor also described the investigation as retaliation for his criticism of the Biden-Harris administration’s border policies.

Adams had previously blamed the White House for the refugee crisis in New York City, which had overwhelmed the White House’s protection system. The influx of illegal immigrants coincided with a spike in robberies in the Big Apple, city police said earlier this year.

Jets landed in the top 15 of the NFL Power Rankings in Week 5

Jets landed in the top 15 of the NFL Power Rankings in Week 5

Below is a compilation of NFL power rankings. The views expressed are not representative of Jets personnel.

Yahoo – 14
“Sure, the weather was bad. But this was an ugly game that revealed some things about the Jets.”

NFL.com – 15
“A sack by Aaron Rodgers on the first play of the game on Sunday set the tone. This was followed by a fumble by Garrett Wilson on the third offensive snap of the game. The Jets had three penalties inside their own 5-yard line the second time around.” Breece Hall went to empty on the third possession. On the next two possessions, there were false start penalties on third and fourth possessions (from the Broncos’ 1-yard line). New York what the 2023 offense could have brought back The A kind of effort on a rainy, dreary day. This spoiled a great game for the defense, allowing Denver only one drive of more than 41 yards. Amazingly, the Jets had a chance to win, but their final three drives failed as Greg Zuerlein missed a free kick in the final minute. Every time we think they’re making small strides, the Jets take a step back.”

ESPN – 16
“Just an interception. The Jets have an effective pass rush (14 sacks) and play good pass defense, so they should have more than one pick. The only player with an interception is backup nickelback Brandin Echols, who came in as an injured reserve in Week 2. None of the starters have an interception, including All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner, whose losing streak is up to 28 games. All of this is confusing as the Jets should be in an ideal position to throw interceptions as a zone-heavy team.”

FOX Sports – 17
“I think the Jets are a better team overall than this, but it certainly didn’t look like it in Week 4. I have no choice but to drop you if you don’t score a touchdown at home against a team led by a rookie QB. It’s the kind of defeat that haunts you all season long.”

Grandstand report – 17
“Last week’s impressive win over the New England Patriots seemed to be something of a springboard game for the New York Jets. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers looked sharp. Gang Green was well on his way with a mediocre (at best) Denver Broncos team next. Well.” As it turned out, the Jets’ Week 3 win was nothing more than a puddle of rain. The weather was truly miserable on Sunday in the one-point loss to the Broncos – but still, due to the poor weather, Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers found no excuses for his Week 4 game.

Professional Football Talk – 17
“The Jets won’t compete if Aaron Rodgers continues to vacillate between MVP and AARP.”

CBS Sports – 18
“The loss to the Broncos looks bad. So much for the idea that the offense has come to life.”

USA Today – March 19th
“Perhaps a trip to London and an offer to pay LB Haason Reddick in pounds would end his contractual stalemate? Or maybe a trip to London means, er, better weather, after New Jersey’s rain proved quite capable of keeping the Jets’ offense grounded? Or as a QB.” Aaron Rodgers said: “The weather was bad, but so were some of my throws.”

Sports Illustrated – 21
“I’ve been covering soccer in New York long enough to sense the beginnings of a swirling drama. While I wouldn’t quite put the Giants and Jets there yet, Sunday’s game against Denver was a huge unforced error. We won’t soon forget that either.” The way Aaron Rodgers responded to the claim that the Jets should change their approach on the line, or the way the head coach later clarified his comments. This team cannot walk on eggshells and be successful.

The Athletic – 24
“First-round tackle Olu Fashanu made his first start on Sunday. Third-round wide receiver Malachi Corley was a disappointment (one catch, 4 yards), but fourth-round running back Braelon Allen played well enough (27 carries, 130 yards). ), that Robert Saleh had to defend on Sunday without allowing him goal-line throws. As for the old man, quarterback Aaron Rodgers doesn’t seem happy: “If your defense holds it to 10, you have to win the game by 100 percent of the time,” he said Sunday.

Josh Heupel’s Vols have a stingy D to complement this dazzling offense

Josh Heupel’s Vols have a stingy D to complement this dazzling offense

As a coach, Josh Heupel made a name for himself as a guru who led offenses so quickly that defenses were left gasping for air and unable to sub out new players.

In three seasons, that was enough to get Tennessee back into the AP Top 25 rankings.

Now his Volunteers are much more balanced, with a stingy, hard-hitting defense that has helped them climb to fourth in the poll and put them among the teams seeking a national title. As Heupel pointed out, Tennessee’s history goes far beyond Peyton Manning, Willie Gault and Johnny Majors.

“The standard at Tennessee is to be elite on defense,” Heupel said after his Vols defeated then-No. 24 NC State in early September. “This is the home of Reggie White, Al Wilson and Eric Berry.”

White was posthumously inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame for terrorizing quarterbacks in the NFL. Wilson is the linebacker who led Tennessee to its last national championship in 1998. Eric Berry was the 2008 Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Year and a five-time Pro Bowler in the NFL.

Tennessee entered this season with just one preseason AP All-American: pass rusher James Pearce Jr., who is considered a possibility for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Pearce and defensive coordinator Tim Banks, who has accompanied Heupel since his arrival in Knoxville, are providing great help.

The Vols (4-0, 1-0) have held five straight opponents under 250 yards of total offense, a streak that began with a shutout against Iowa in the Citrus Bowl in January. They also defeated NC State in Charlotte, holding then-No. 15 Oklahoma to just 222 yards, baptizing the Sooners into the SEC and giving the Vols their first road win over a top-15 team since 2006.

Oklahoma ended Tennessee’s streak of 19 consecutive quarters without giving up an offensive touchdown, Tennessee’s longest streak since the Vols shut out 15 straight opponents between 1938 and 1939.

Despite implementing scholarship cuts under former coach Jeremy Pruitt as part of Tennessee’s self-inflicted punishment for NCAA violations, the Vols have built up enough depth to allow Banks to play against a variety of linemen and freshen up the pass rushers hold. Against Oklahoma, five linemen had at least one tackle for loss while the Vols held the Sooners to a season-low 36 yards rushing.

Joshua Josephs was named the SEC’s co-defensive lineman of the week with three tackles, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and a tackle for loss.

Heupel said rotation can change one opponent to another. He praised the players for believing in the coaches’ demands.

“They can play hard because they stay fresh throughout the entire football game,” Heupel said.

The Vols lead the nation in giving up just 176 yards per game while allowing just 7 points per game and 50.8 rushing yards per game each.

Lineman Elijah Simmons set the tone on Oklahoma’s opening drive on offense, breaking through with a 5-yard tackle for a loss. That was the first of 11 tackles for a loss in a defensive display that also included a safety and three sacks. Heupel said Simmons played “violently and destructively” the entire game.

Simmons said the Vols were so deep on the defensive line that it didn’t really feel like there was a true group of starters. They definitely instilled confidence in their teammates with the way they played earlier this season.

“I believe, and I feel like everyone else believes, that they are the best in the country,” defenseman Christian Harrison said.

Tennessee has won 13 SEC championships but last played in the championship game in 2001. The Vols’ last SEC championship came in 1998, when they won the national title, ushering in the BCS era. The Vols visit Arkansas (3-2, 1-1) on Saturday night and have home games against Florida, No. 1 Alabama and Kentucky before visiting No. 5 Georgia on Nov. 16.

Heupel sees his defense building a strong identity, which means his offense doesn’t need to score big every game to win.

“Then it’s about linking all three phases together to make sure that you end up on the right side of the scoreboard,” said Heupel.

24-Year-Old Releases Video of Sex With 16-Year-Old, BBPD Says

24-Year-Old Releases Video of Sex With 16-Year-Old, BBPD Says

While investigating a 24-year-old accused of leaking a video of sexual intercourse with a 16-year-old girl, investigators discovered a video showing two four-year-olds engaging in sexual activity.

The Boynton Beach Police Department (BBPD) said officers responded to a home on Rialto Drive in Boynton Beach on June 24 for a disturbance.

Officers discovered that when they arrived at the house there was a crowd present to confront 24-year-old Fendy Philippe for allegedly leaking a sex video of a 16-year-old girl.

The victim, who was part of the crowd at the house, told investigators that she helped people with their homework and promoted her work on TikTok. Philippe had found her and sent her a message asking for her phone number.

The affidavit states that after talking for a while, Philipe asked the girl to come to his house and help him apply for food stamps. He had paid for an Uber for her to get to his house on May 7th.

The victim continued to tell investigators that she fell asleep and woke up being kissed by him. The affidavit noted that she consented to sex with Philippe; He told her to turn around during intercourse, leading her to believe he was recording her.

After that encounter, the victim wanted to go home, so Philippe paid for another Uber to get her home, the report said.

The victim told officers that days later she was contacted via Facebook by a friend who told her that he had seen a sex video of her in a group called “HaitianPie” on Telegram.

The girl said she sent voice messages to Phillippe expressing her concerns, but told her that it was his friend, not him, who leaked the videos.

In a conversation with investigators, Philippe initially claimed he had never had sexual intercourse with the underage girl, then eventually confessed and claimed she was the one who recorded the encounter.

Philippe later admitted to sharing the images and videos with his friend, who he said shared the video, the report continued.

During the investigation, officers inspected Philipe’s phone and discovered a video of two four-year-olds having sex, which he claimed was a joke and did not watch the full video.

Philippe is accused of two counts of unlawful sexual activity with minors and possession of child pornography.
