McDonald’s is swapping protein in its “highly anticipated” sandwich release next week

Watch out, Chick-fil-A and Burger King – McDonald’s is doing its best. Or at least in the hope that customers will put the chicken in their mouths.

On Thursday, the fast food giant announced that its “highly anticipated” Chicken Big Mac will be available in U.S. restaurants on October 10.

The “reimagined version of a classic menu item was secretly introduced by Chain at the McDonnell’s pop-up,” McDonald’s said in a press release.

“By tapping into some of our fans’ greatest passions, from dupe culture to live streaming, we are able to serve more than just a sandwich,” said Tariq Hassan, chief marketing and customer experience officer at McDonald’s USA, in a statement. “This campaign truly has something for everyone to enjoy and we are offering experiences that will surprise and delight them, all before the Chicken Big Mac hits restaurants.”

Polls show that Californians largely support Prop. 36 to get tougher on crime

Polls show that Californians largely support Prop. 36 to get tougher on crime

A solid majority of likely California voters support Proposition 36, the November ballot measure that would impose tougher penalties for retail theft and fentanyl-related crimes, according to a new poll from the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies co-sponsored by The Times.

Imposing harsher sentences for repeat offenders boosted that support and far outweighed voters’ desire to increase overall law enforcement or deter future crimes, the poll found.

However, nearly half of respondents support rehabilitation and treatment of first-time offenders, among other things, as the best way to improve California’s criminal justice system. Voters were almost evenly divided on whether Proposition 36 would reduce homelessness or drug addiction in California – one of the selling points of the measure’s supporters.

“Voters want to approve this initiative,” said Mark DiCamillo, director of the Berkeley IGS Poll, a nonpartisan survey of public opinion in California. “I find the reasons interesting.”

The Berkeley poll also found support declining for an initiative to increase California’s minimum wage, which along with Proposition 36 is among the 10 statewide measures on California’s November ballot. Support also remained low for the ballot measure that would expand local government authority to impose rent control.

The Homelessness, Drug Addiction and Theft Reduction Act, known as Proposition 36, imposes stricter penalties for repeat theft and crimes involving the deadly drug fentanyl. The nonpartisan Office of Legislative Analysis predicted the initiative could cost the state hundreds of millions of dollars annually.

The measure is strongly supported by a group of California state attorneys general and major retailers including Walmart and aims to overhaul parts of it Proposal 47a measure approved by voters in 2014 that reduced certain penalties for drug and property crimes.

Before the passage of Proposition 47, some thefts could be considered felonies if the goods stolen were valued at $450 or more. However, Proposition 47 increased the threshold to $950. Law enforcement officials and others criticized those changes, saying the reduced punishment has led to an increase in thefts and other lawlessness across California.

Gov. Gavin Newsom and California’s Democratic legislative leadership oppose Proposition 36 because they fear it would return the state to its tough-on-crime policies of the past, which left state prisons so overcrowded that federal courts ruled that the state violated the constitutional rights of inmates. DiCamillo said leaders’ warnings have not swayed voters so far.

“There are things that voters have in mind that politicians seem to have underestimated,” DiCamilo said.

Sixty percent of likely voters supported Proposition 36, a slight increase from August’s Berkeley poll results, while 21 percent opposed the measure and 19 percent were undecided.

A majority of Republicans and independents strongly supported the measure, as did a majority of Democrats. Both men and women supported Proposition 36, as did all age groups, although voters under 30 expressed the lowest support. Black voters likely rejected the ballot measure, which opponents say unfairly targets people of color, while majorities of white, Latino and Asian American/Pacific Islander voters supported it, the poll found.

42 percent of likely voters do not believe Proposition 36 will reduce homelessness and drug addiction, while 39 percent believe it will be effective.

Among likely voters who opposed Proposition 36, 86% said they believe it is more important for California to expand rehabilitation and treatment for first-time offenders or explore other alternatives to best improve the criminal justice system. Among those in favor of the measure, 31% hold this view.

Newsom and the Democrats tried to tinker a competing ballot measure This summer would have addressed crimes like shoplifting with a less punitive approach than Proposition 36, which was pushed by prosecutors abruptly withdrawn from the governor in early July.

Newsom has also publicly challenged the costs the measure would impose, calling it an “unfunded” mandate. The governor also criticized the measure’s drug treatment component last month, saying it “guarantees” mental health treatment. But it’s unclear how enforcement would work if residential treatment facilities “do not exist” in 22 of the state’s 58 counties.

Greg Totten, co-chair of the Yes on Proposition 36 campaign, said voters want a “balanced approach to improving safety in their neighborhoods, holding repeat offenders and fentanyl dealers accountable, and strong incentives for drug treatment for people struggling with addictions.” offers”. The survey is “consistent with what we hear every day from Californians in every community across the state.”

Anthony York, a former spokesman for Newsom who now serves as spokesman for the No on Proposition 36 campaign, said the opposing side has done an “effective job of misleading voters.”

“The poll shows that voters support treatment,” York said, arguing that Proposition 36 will cut funding for treatment and increase prison spending. “In the coming weeks, it’s our job to tell them what’s really behind Prop. 36.”

The poll also examined how voters feel about other initiatives addressing California’s minimum wage and expanding rent control.

In a significant change from the poll in early August, support for Proposition 32, a measure to initially increase the federal minimum wage, has fallen below 50%. Two months ago, 52% of voters said they would vote to raise the minimum wage, but at the end of September only 46% were in favor.

Proposition 32 is most popular in urban areas, including 56% of likely voters in the San Francisco Bay Area and 50% in Los Angeles County who said they would vote for it.

“There is opposition to the minimum wage in other parts of the state,” DiCamillo said, pointing to opposition in the Inland Empire, the Central Valley and the Central Coast.

Support for Proposition 33, which would expand local government authority to impose rent control, has also become muted. In early August, 40% of voters said they would vote for it, but by the end of September that number fell to 37%.

The Berkeley poll was conducted online in English and Spanish from Sept. 25 to Oct. 1 among 3,045 Californians who were expected to vote in the November election.

The ministry recorded a 41.68 percent decrease in plastic waste entering the sea

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Maritime Affairs and Investment Coordination Ministry reported a 41.68 percent decrease in the discharge of plastic waste into the sea since 2018, amounting to 256,614 tons of waste.

In an online discussion on Friday, Rofi Alhanif, deputy commissioner of the Ministry of Waste Management, noted that 615,675 tons of plastic waste entered the sea in 2018.

According to the National Coordination Team for Marine Debris Management (TKNPSL), 359,061 tons of plastic waste entered the sea in 2023.

As set out in the Marine Debris Handling National Action Plan (RAN PSL), the Indonesian government had already set a goal of reducing plastic waste entering the sea to 70 percent by 2025.

He drew attention to several challenges that need to be addressed to achieve the target, such as the waste collection rate, which is not yet optimal, and an insufficient budget for waste management systems and human resources.

“Our waste collection is not yet optimal, especially in rural areas or regions where waste disposal is still very weak,” he noted.

Alhanif also stated that plastic consumption is increasing in line with population growth.

In addition, the other challenges include waste management in ports and marine tourism areas, which is not yet optimal, people’s awareness, which still needs to be strengthened, and waste data management systems on land and at sea that are not yet integrated.

Daniel Penny returns to court in Jordan Neely chokehold case – NBC New York

Daniel Penny returns to court in Jordan Neely chokehold case – NBC New York

What you should know

  • Daniel Penny was back in court Thursday for a preliminary hearing on the charges he faces in connection with the death of Jordan Neely, whom he placed in a fatal chokehold aboard a New York subway in May 2023
  • Penny, 24, pleaded not guilty to second-degree manslaughter and involuntary manslaughter in connection with the death of Neely, a former Michael Jackson impersonator who was screaming and begging for money on the train to Manhattan, according to witnesses.
  • Thursday’s hearing focused on the evidence that could be presented in court and whether the judge will allow the jury to see it. The trial is scheduled to begin later in October

It’s a case that made national headlines: Daniel Penny, a retired Marine, was charged with killing Jordan Neely in a subway chokehold.

Wearing a gray suit, Penny was back in court on Thursday to attend a hearing about evidence that could be presented in court in a few days. Body camera footage from various angles was shown during the hearing, as was Penny’s interview at the police station on the day Neely died in May 2023.

Both involve videos that the defense doesn’t want the jury to see.

“I’m not trying to kill the guy, I’m trying to de-escalate the situation,” Neely was heard saying during police questioning.

When asked why he got involved, Penny replied: “He threatened people… there were women and children on the train.”

Penny’s defense wants some of the exchange suppressed, but it will be up to the judge to consider whether to allow it.

Witness video from the day of the incident shows Penny, a Long Island native and Navy veteran, holding Neely. According to prosecutors, the chokehold Penny held for several minutes killed Neely, a 30-year-old homeless man and former Michael Jackson impersonator.

Body camera footage showed Neely lying on the ground. Officers were seen saying he had a weak pulse and then showed them resuscitating him about four minutes after they arrived. Witnesses were also seen speaking to police.

Several passengers on the northbound F train told police they were concerned that Neely was unpredictable, and Penny, 24, intervened.

“He almost stopped Neely from behaving the way he was because he was yelling, which contributed to his erratic behavior,” said an officer who took the stand, summarizing what two women had told him .

Penny’s trial is scheduled to begin later in October. He is charged with involuntary manslaughter and involuntary manslaughter.

During the hearing, Penny diverted his attention from the judge, the lawyers, and the videos being broadcast in the courtroom. In one of the videos, Penny was seen telling an officer: “I just kicked him out.”

Also shown was the moment at the police station when Penny waived his Miranda rights in the interrogation room. He went on to describe what he thought happened, saying that the train door was closed, Neely threw away his jacket, and then yelled, “I’m going to kill everyone and I don’t care if I’m in there forever.” “I’ll end up in prison.”

During his interrogation, Penny stood up to show officers how he pushed his arm against Neely and then used his leg to drop him to the ground.

“I wasn’t trying to hurt him, I was trying to stop him from hurting someone else. That’s what we learn in the Marine Corps,” he later told officials.

Penny served in the Marines for four years and was discharged in 2021.

The defense said nothing from the interaction between Penny and police should go to the jury because it was evidence of an unlawful arrest. Penny’s lawyers contend that officials should have informed Penny of his rights sooner.

The chokehold death, captured on bystander video, sparked heated debate in 2023, with some praising Penny as a good Samaritan while others accused him of racist vigilantism. Penny is white and Neely was black.

Neely lost consciousness during the fight. Family members and her supporters said Neely, who struggled with mental illness and homelessness, screamed for help and was met with violence.

To secure a conviction for involuntary manslaughter, which carries a prison sentence of up to 15 years, prosecutors would have to prove that Penny negligently caused Neely’s death despite being aware of the risk of serious harm. A conviction for involuntary manslaughter would require the jury to conclude that Penny unjustifiably exposed Neely to the risk of death but failed to recognize that risk. The maximum penalty would be four years in prison.

What’s the best Magnificent Seven stock to buy if the Fed cuts interest rates?

What’s the best Magnificent Seven stock to buy if the Fed cuts interest rates?

The Federal Reserve’s actions are great for all seven of these giants, but better for some than others.

Interest rates are finally coming down as the Federal Reserve announced a significant 0.5% rate cut in September. Further interest rate cuts are likely.

Lower rates are typically seen as good news for smaller businesses. However, they also benefit large companies, including the market-leading Magnificent Seven group of stocks. What’s the best Magnificent Seven stock to buy if the Fed cuts interest rates?

How interest rate cuts could benefit the Magnificent Seven

First, let’s look at how lower interest rates could help members of the Magnificent Seven. In my opinion, three ways are the most important.

First (and most obvious), lower interest rates lower Magnificent Seven companies’ borrowing costs. This makes it cheaper to refinance maturing debts. They also allow companies to finance new projects that could lead to future growth.

Second, lower interest rates can increase customer spending. This can happen regardless of whether the customers are individual consumers or organizations.

Third, lower interest rates may lead to a weakening of the US dollar. This benefits Magnificent Seven companies that export to other countries by making their products more competitive in international markets.

Review of the Magnificent Seven

Interest rate cuts are likely to benefit all Magnificent Seven stocks. However, some will benefit more than others.

Amazon (AMZN -1.51%) has the highest debt on its books at $157.8 billion. Apple (AAPL -0.49%) And Microsoft (MSFT -0.14%) are behind with debts of $101.3 billion and $97.8 billion, respectively. Lower interest rates could help these companies the most in terms of reducing interest expenses when their debt comes due (assuming interest rates are still lower at that time).

Metaplatforms (META 1.74%) And alphabet (GOOG -0.06%) (GOOGL) are in the middle of the pack with debts totaling almost $38 billion and $28.7 billion, respectively. Tesla‘S (TSLA -3.36%) The debt burden is only 12.5 billion US dollars Nvidia‘S (NVDA 3.37%) The $10 billion debt is the lowest of the Magnificent Seven.

I suspect that the increase in customer spending due to lower interest rates will be most pronounced among companies with the most expensive products. Tesla’s electric vehicles can cost around $40,000 at their lowest, with the expensive models costing over $113,000.

Companies also spend significant amounts of money purchasing Nvidia’s graphics processing units (GPUs). Lower rates could particularly help startups and smaller companies expand their artificial intelligence (AI) development efforts.

Amazon, Alphabet and Microsoft operate cloud service platforms that could benefit from higher customer spending due to lower tariffs. All three companies market consumer goods, whose sales could also increase. The same goes for Apple and, to a lesser extent, Meta.

Apple and Tesla would probably benefit the most from a weaker US dollar. Sales outside the US are greater than US sales for both companies. But all of the other “Magnificent Seven” also recorded significant international sales.

The best Magnificent Seven stock to buy when prices are falling

I think Amazon and Tesla will likely benefit the most from the Fed’s rate cuts. Which stock is better to buy? I would go to Amazon.

Tesla is much more expensive than Amazon due to expected earnings multiples and increasing competition. Worse, consumer interest in electric vehicles appears to be waning.

Meanwhile, Amazon’s AWS cloud platform has a massive AI tailwind behind it. Advertising on Prime Video has become an important new growth driver for the company. Amazon’s technology investments should continue to pay off in increased profitability for its e-commerce business. Project Kuiper, a new satellite internet service, is expected to be another new source of growth.

All of this would be positive for Amazon without lower interest rates. However, lower interest rates are likely to give the company additional momentum – and push its shares higher.

Obama wants to rally support for Harris in key battleground states

Obama wants to rally support for Harris in key battleground states

CNN

Former President Barack Obama plans to launch a 27-day campaign sprint in Pennsylvania next week for Vice President Kamala Harris, an adviser to the Democratic presidential nominee’s campaign said, hoping his star power among Democrats can help propel her to office , which he once held.

Apparently worried about Democratic complacency and aware of the razor-thin results in the polls, Obama – along with his wife Michelle, one of the party’s most popular figures – is trying to help Harris in any way he can, aides said.

Thursday’s rally in Pittsburgh will be the first in a series of events Obama plans to hold at campaign sites in the weeks leading up to Election Day, according to a senior Harris campaign official.

Aside from rallies, an Obama adviser said the former president wanted to help Democrats by taping candidate-specific ads and making his name available for email appeals for campaign funds, including for DownsElection race. Last month, he headlined a $4 million fundraiser for Harris in Los Angeles.

Obama sees the 2024 election as an “all hands on deck” moment, advisers said.

“I wish I could give you a four- or five-point plan on how we’re going to win this election. Frankly, the plan is that we will push through it,” he said during the fundraiser in California, according to excerpts from his office.

The event was Obama’s first solo fundraising appearance for Harris since she secured the Democratic nomination in the summer As his office said at the time, the total amount he raised for Democrats through events and fundraisers increased to more than $76 million.

There is no question that Obama would have offered his campaign talents to President Joe Biden had he remained in the race. Still, Obama was among the party elders whose quiet maneuvering over the summer made it clear to Biden, his former vice president, that Democrats faced almost certain defeat if he remained on the ticket.

And in his August speech to the Democratic National Convention, Obama called Harris an heir to the political movement he launched in 2008 and said she could “find a new way to meet today’s challenges.”

He also warned that the road to the White House would be steep and require an all-out effort from Harris supporters.

“It is up to all of us to fight for the America we believe in. And make no mistake: it will be a fight,” he said.

Obama and Harris have known each other for 20 years. The energy fueling her candidacy and the roaring crowds chanting her name have drawn comparisons to Obama’s history-making candidacy in 2008.

Aides to the former president say his first memory of meeting Harris came during a fundraiser for his 2004 Senate run in California.

Four years later, as Obama sought a long-term run for the White House, Harris defied many in her party and endorsed him over then-Sen. Hillary Clinton, who early on had the support of much of the Democratic establishment and many black leaders.

Harris flew to Springfield, Illinois, to watch him announce his candidacy. A photo from that February day in 2007 shows a windswept Harris – then a district attorney in San Francisco – not on stage or in a VIP room, but among the crowd waiting for Obama to walk by and shake her hand.

Ahead of the 2008 Iowa caucuses, she packed her black puffer jacket and boots and headed to Des Moines just after Christmas to join the ranks of Obama’s volunteer army.

“None of us were too small,” Harris later recalled, “and we spent hours knocking on doors in freezing temperatures.”

Obama retaliated in 2010, not by knocking on doors, but by endorsing Harris’ candidacy for California attorney general. At a rally in Los Angeles that helped boost her campaign, he described Harris as “a dear, dear friend of mine, so I want everyone to do the right thing by her.”

Fourteen years later, Obama is once again hoping that the country will do right by his friend – and also prevent Donald Trump from returning to the White House.

A Harris victory, Obama told donors last month, “is not going to solve all the craziness that’s out there.”

“But every time we win, it solidifies this new future. It opens up these new possibilities. At some point this will become the new normal and the new reality,” he said.
