Syracuse University fraternity suspended after “disgusting” videos posted online

Syracuse University fraternity suspended after “disgusting” videos posted online

Syracuse University has suspended an on-campus fraternity after videos posted online showed students being harassed and mistreated.

In a letter to campus Wednesday, Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud said the “disgusting” videos “endanger the well-being of some of our students.” He said the videos were taken at the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity house.

“I am outraged by the actions shown in these videos and condemn this behavior,” Syverud said in the letter. “The university has issued an immediate interim suspension halting all Phi Kappa Psi activities. This suspension will remain in effect while the University conducts an immediate and thorough investigation. The Phi Kappa Psi National Office has also ordered the chapter to cease and desist from all activities.”

The videos appear to show two students lying on the floor while at least one of them vomits on them. Another student is then seen tied to a pole with his mouth taped shut.

“Hazing and related actions that endanger our students constitute a serious violation of both University policy and New York law,” Syverud said.

The university asks anyone with information to contact the university’s Department of Public Safety or Community Standards. All reports will be treated confidentially.

Letter from Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud

Dear students, teachers and staff:

The University has recently been made aware of videos showing abhorrent behavior that endangers the welfare of some of our students. The videos in question show alleged acts at the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity house.

I am outraged by the actions shown in these videos and condemn this behavior. The university has issued an immediate interim suspension halting all activities of Phi Kappa Psi. This suspension will remain in effect while the University conducts a prompt and thorough investigation. Phi Kappa Psi’s national office has also ordered the chapter to cease and desist from all activities. Hazing and related actions that endanger our students constitute a serious violation of both University policy and New York law.

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) and Community Standards have already launched an investigation. DPS also notified and involved the Syracuse Police Department because the activities observed on video could be considered criminal offenses. DPS and Community Standards have jointly begun collecting evidence and will interview students associated with Phi Kappa Psi, including members, supporters and people who have come forward as witnesses. Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken against all individuals involved.

While this investigation continues, our priority is supporting all affected students. This also includes providing affected students with the necessary resources and services. If you or someone you know has information, please contact Community Standards or DPS. Your reporting will be treated confidentially.

The university will provide further information on this if necessary.

Sincerely,

Chancellor Kent Syverud

It will be warmer and sunnier in the next few days

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) – Thursday starts off cool again, but this time we’ll have temperatures above 30° for most of us.

After a cool start to the week, temperatures will be even warmer than on Thursday.

The wind is blowing from the south, so we will warm up very quickly. Temperatures will peak in the mid to upper 60s this afternoon and skies will be mostly sunny again.

High temperatures this afternoon will be in the low 60s. We are entering a warm time.(WSAW)

Due to the gusty winds, low humidity and the fact that it has been a few days since it rained, there is an increased risk of fire compared to recent days. This also applies to Friday. Controlled burns are not recommended.

Light showers remain possible in the distant Northwoods early Saturday. These will likely remain north of Highway 64 and be below 0.25 inches. In other words, it is still not expected to be enough to alleviate the drought. The only isolated chance of rain and our best chance for rain over the next week or so is on Tuesday. It’s too early to tell how much rain we’ll get. Once the cold front passes behind these showers, that will be the end of the warmer period we are entering.

Open Enrollment Is Here: 3 Signs It’s Time to Change Your Medicare Advantage Plan

Open Enrollment Is Here: 3 Signs It’s Time to Change Your Medicare Advantage Plan

You don’t have to stick to a plan that doesn’t fully meet your needs.

Medicare enrollees have the opportunity to change their health insurance coverage each year during fall enrollment, which runs from October 15th to December 7th. If you use Medicare Advantage, you may be wondering whether it’s worth signing up for a new plan for 2025. Here are a few signs that you should at least consider switching.

1. Your costs are increasing

Many retirees live on a tight budget and little flexibility. If this is your situation and the cost of your Medicare Advantage plan is increasing in 2025, then that alone is a reason to look at other plan options.

You may particularly want to consider purchasing a new plan if Social Security’s cost of living adjustments are not enough to cover this increase in costs. Next year, benefits are expected to increase by 2.5%. But if your monthly benefit isn’t that high to begin with, it may not be that big of an increase.

2. Your benefits will be reduced

The advantage of choosing Medicare Advantage over original Medicare is that you may gain access to a variety of services that would not otherwise be covered. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, by 2024, 97% or more of Medicare Advantage plans will offer dental, vision, hearing or fitness benefits.

And these are considered more “standard” benefits for Medicare Advantage plans. Some plans go well beyond these perks and include services like home cleaning and meal delivery.

However, if your Medicare Advantage plan loses some of these additional benefits in 2025, you may want to make a switch. Having to pay out of pocket for certain services could hurt your finances more than paying a higher premium for an Advantage plan with more coverage.

3. Your favorite providers are leaving the network

Once you get used to seeing certain providers, it can be difficult to make a switch. And if you have limited access to transportation, losing your preferred provider could mean struggling to take care of your health.

If your favorite doctors aren’t included in your plan next year, it might be time to think about getting a new Medicare Advantage plan. If you have even more providers to choose from, you may want to forego Advantage altogether and switch to Original Medicare.

However, keep in mind that original Medicare does not cover services such as dental, vision and hearing services. You’ll also need to sign up for a Part D drug plan in addition to original Medicare.

You should also know that Medicare Advantage plans typically have a deductible maximum that limits your annual spending, but Original Medicare plans do not. And although you can purchase supplemental insurance (Medigap) as an original Medicare enrollee, you may find it difficult to get affordable coverage if you choose to do so after being covered by an Advantage plan. You may also have to complete a waiting period for a Medigap plan to cover certain medical conditions you have.

Choosing a new Medicare Advantage plan can be overwhelming. So don’t wait until the end of the open enrollment period to get started. Start reviewing your options in the coming weeks if it’s clear you need a change. This way, you can go through the process without undue stress and avoid having to make a quick decision that ends up being the wrong one.

The News-Gazette’s Top 10 Boys Soccer: It’s Time for the Playoffs | sport

The News-Gazette’s Top 10 Boys Soccer: It’s Time for the Playoffs | sport

There wasn’t much to complain about last week. Just a preseason game here and there to end the regular season before going into win-or-go-home mode. Some teams have already started. Some are eagerly awaiting their first postseason match. Prep Coordinator Zach Piatt takes a look at how it all starts:

1. St. Joseph Ogden

➜ Record: 20-2-1

➜ Previous ranking: No. 1

The Spartans ended the regular season with a bang, defeating Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond 14-0. Tyler Hess was all over the statistics with three goals and six assists. Logan Mills led the net scoring with four goals, followed by Zach Harper with three and Quinn Stahl and Alex Acosta with two goals each. SJ-O will play its Class 1A St. Anne Regional semifinal game against Iroquois West.

2. Fisher/GCMS

➜ Record: 17-3-1

➜ Previous ranking: No. 2

Heading into their 1A Fisher Regional semifinal game against Unity, the Bunnies are riding a six-game winning streak and have eliminated four straight opponents. Their 2-0 win over Teutopolis gave them and goaltender Parker Baillie 16 shutouts on the year, extending their program single-season record. With Zack Zbinden back in the mix, watch out for Fisher/GCMS.

3. Oak wood/salt fork

➜ Record: 20-3

➜ Previous ranking: No. 3

With a chance to bounce back after a loss to Fisher/GCMS before the postseason, O/SF did just that with a 6-1 win over BHRA thanks to four goals from Mason Swartz. O/SF hopes it can carry that momentum into its 1A Hoopeston Area Regional semifinal game against host Cornjerkers.

4. Watseka/Milford

➜ Record: 16-4-1

➜ Previous ranking: No. 4

After two close games, the Warriors had to work hard to close out the regular season. They won 4-3 against Georgetown-Ridge Farm/Westville, with David Bell scoring the winning penalty. Reed and Custer then played to a 1-1 tie, with Bell scoring the team’s only goal and Jason Moore making a season-best 10 saves. Still a dangerous team heading into the 1A St. Anne Regional semifinals with Clifton Central.

5. University High

➜ Record: 16-6

➜ Previous ranking: No. 6

The Illineks ended their regular season a few days ahead of everyone else with a 10-1 victory over Cornerstone Christian to secure the East Central Illinois Conference title. Uni High is now on a five-game winning streak after losing four of its last five games. This team is firing on all cylinders heading into the 1A Fisher Regional semifinal game against St. Thomas More.

6th Centenary

➜ Record: 11-7-2

➜ Previous ranking: No. 7

Things weren’t looking good for the Chargers after losing their third straight game last week, but they were able to bounce back with wins over Rantoul/Paxton-Buckley-Loda and Bloomington to start the postseason with some momentum. Centennial will play regional 2A host Charleston for a spot in the finals. Coach Thair Al-Saqri said his team was the best in the region. Time to prove it.

7. Mahomet-Seymour

➜ Record: 13-7-2

➜ Previous ranking: No. 5

The Bulldogs are the only team in this ranking that still has one regular season game left to play, a road game against Taylorville on Thursday. They then await the winner of Mt. Zion and Rantoul/Paxton-Buckley-Loda for a 2A Meridian Regional semifinal showdown. MS is currently off at 0-2, but Taylorville is its chance to get back on track before postseason play.

8. Urbana

➜ Record: 10-8-1

➜ Previous ranking: No. 9

The Tigers endured one of their most difficult stretches ever over the final three weeks of the regular season, losing five of their last seven games, but ended the game on a positive note with an 8-0 win over Peoria. Seven different players scored the winning goal. Urbana is hoping that will be just enough to advance them to a 2A regional run on home soil, starting with Danville.

9. St Thomas More

➜ Record: 9-6-4

➜ Previous ranking: No. 10

The Sabers finished the regular season with a 4-0-2 run and carried that mojo to an 8-0 victory over Judah Christian in the 1A Fisher Regional quarterfinals on Tuesday. STM is now tasked with facing third-seeded Uni High, a team the Sabers lost 5-0 a month ago, in the semifinals.

10. Unity

➜ Record: 8-7-3

➜ Previous ranking: Unranked

The Rockets had the definition of a regular season with ups and downs and ended it on a downturn with two losses and a tie in their last three games. They put all that aside, however, and earned a 3-1 comeback win over Monticello in the quarterfinals of the 1A Fisher Regional on Tuesday thanks to goals from Teaguen Williams, Ryan Robinson and Nolan Remole. Next it’s the turn of the host bunnies.
