Nebraskaland Bank and the NPPS Foundation are hosting an on-site film to support the journalism club

Nebraskaland Bank and the NPPS Foundation are hosting an on-site film to support the journalism club

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) – The Nebraska Land Bank hosted an on-site movie night to benefit the NPHS Journalism Club on Wednesday.

This is the second year that Nebraskaland Bank and the North Platte Public Schools Foundation have hosted the family event.

Admission to the film “If” was free, as were food and voluntary donations to help the high school journalism club fund new equipment such as cameras, microphones and lenses.

When Evonne Keck, PR and media manager at Nebraskaland Bank, approached the NPHS Foundation about collaborating on a fun evening for the community, it was a no-brainer.

“To do things for the families, you know, they could take care of their dinner and their kids could watch the movie and just have a nice fall evening. It was a voluntary donation to benefit the high school journalism club. They are raising money for new cameras and equipment they need. That’s why we’re happy to help them with this event,” said Keck.

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – As subfreezing temperatures began Wednesday morning, the growing season has officially come to an end in southern Wisconsin. Frost and freeze warnings will not be issued again until the growing season begins again next spring. Despite the cold start to the week, a strong warming trend is expected by the end of the week. The Slidell man charged with video voyeurism is facing a third charge

The Slidell man charged with video voyeurism is facing a third charge

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – New details in a voyeurism case that crosses state borders. Evidence is mounting in a new lawsuit against the Slidell man accused of planting hidden cameras in his Orange Beach home and condo.

Jonathan Bethancourt is charged with 19 counts of video voyeurism. Bethancourt was arrested on the first 11 counts on May 29, a week after his former nanny – Alyssa Glavan – went to Slidell police – after making a disturbing discovery at Bethancourt’s home where she worked.

The civil lawsuit, filed in late August, caused a container of cotton swabs to be overturned in the bathroom, according to Glavan. As she bent down to pick it up, she noticed what appeared to be a digital camera disguised as a smoke detector mounted about 10 inches above the wall in front of the toilet.

“I thought, this can’t be real, and when I saw the SD card I thought, Oh my God. There was also a QR code on the back that I scanned that told me how to set up your I-Spy camera. That’s when it really hit me and I started freaking out and my heart was beating really fast,” Glavan told FOX 10 News shortly after Bethancourt’s arrest.

Investigators say multiple cameras were discovered at Slidell’s home and an Orange Beach condo. Glavan said she had only worked for Bethancourt for six months. Other defendants named in this latest lawsuit include Bethancourt’s A/C and Heating, which was forced to vacate his home, and his wife, Lauren Bethancourt.

In the lawsuit, Glavan alleges public embarrassment and mental anguish from not only being recorded, but also the possibility that the images were shared. She is demanding, among other things, compensation for pain and suffering.

Meanwhile, Bethancourt remains free on bail after being rearrested on July 1 and charged with an additional eight counts of video voyeurism.

After that second arrest, two additional lawsuits were filed by alleged victims — one of them a minor, according to the lawsuit filed by her parents. The other was filed by a woman who was employed by Bethancourt from May 2020 until this year, including as a nanny for his first child and filing paperwork for his company.

The lawsuit also mentions beach trips to two separate Orange Beach condominiums owned or rented by Bethancourt.

FOX 10 News has reached out to the Orange Beach Police Department to see if any charges have been filed in their jurisdiction. They said Slidell police would not release any information to them until their investigation was complete.

Texas men’s basketball faces former coach Chris Beard – The Daily Texan

Texas men’s basketball faces former coach Chris Beard – The Daily Texan

The start of 2023 was a tumultuous time for Texas men’s basketball. Former head coach Chris Beard was fired and assistant coach Rodney Terry took over the interim position.

What followed was one of Texas’ best March Madness runs in recent years. With just a few months as the team’s head coach, Terry led the Longhorns to the Elite Eight.

On December 12, 2022, Beard was arrested for assault by strangulation against his wife. Beard was subsequently suspended without pay from the University of Texas and later fired on January 5.

Trew, Beard’s wife, later walked back her statements, apologizing for what she had caused and claiming that Beard had acted in self-defense after she broke his glasses. The criminal complaint was dismissed.

Just three months later, Beard took over as manager of the Mississippi Rebels men’s basketball team, where he has been for a year and a half.

With Texas moving to the Southeastern Conference, the Longhorns will face Ole Miss for the first time since Beard took over. But Terry isn’t worried.

“Chris Beard and I go back a long time,” Terry said on the website SEC Media Day. “You’re talking about 25 years of friendship, one of my really, really close friends in the industry. I wouldn’t have this opportunity here in Texas if he wasn’t kind enough to bring me back to Texas.”

Beard hired Terry as an assistant coach in 2021, but had previously served as an assistant coach at Texas under former head coach Rick Barnes for nine years, from 2002 to 2011.

“(I) had a chance to come back and start a second stint at Texas, hoping that we get a chance to build a national championship team, a team that gets to play on Monday nights,” Terry said.

Despite the controversial events, Terry and Beard maintain a close relationship and try to talk about opponents other than each other. Texas and Mississippi will face off on January 29th in Oxford.

The SEC is a major conference in this sport and expectations are high. Texas is currently five spots ahead of Ole Miss in the AP poll, at Nos. 19 and 24, respectively, but a lot can change in the next few months.

“Coaches have taken their teams to the Final Four,” Terry said. “And there have been great players in this league and obviously a lot of really good, intimate environments to play in that will be great venues.”

    How does WhatsApp make money?

    How does WhatsApp make money?

Getty Images A woman holds a cell phoneGetty Images

The main messaging apps are all free. So what’s in it for them?

In the last 24 hours I have written more than 100 WhatsApp messages.

None of them were very exciting. I made plans with my family, discussed work projects with colleagues, and shared news and gossip with some friends.

Maybe I need to do better, but even my most boring messages were encrypted by default, using WhatsApp’s powerful computer servers housed in various data centers around the world.

It’s not a cheap operation, and yet neither I nor any of the people I spoke to yesterday have ever spent any money to use it. The platform has almost three billion users worldwide.

How does WhatsApp – or Zapzap as it is called in Brazil – make money?

Admittedly, it helps that WhatsApp has a huge parent company behind it – Meta, which also includes Facebook and Instagram.

Individual, private WhatsApp accounts like mine are free because WhatsApp makes money from corporate customers wanting to communicate with users like me.

Since last year, companies have been able to set up free channels on WhatsApp and send messages that can be read by anyone who decides to subscribe.

What they do pay a premium for, however, is access to interactions with individual customers through the app, both conversational and transactional.

The UK is comparatively still in its infancy here, but in the Indian city of Bangalore, for example, you can now buy a bus ticket and choose your seat via WhatsApp.

“If we do all this right, our vision is that a company and a customer should be able to do things properly in a chat thread,” says Nikila Srinivasan, vice president of business messaging at Meta.

“That means if you want to book a ticket, if you want to make a return, if you want to make a payment, you should be able to do that without ever leaving your chat thread. And then you just go back to all the other conversations in your life.”

Businesses can now also choose to pay for a link that starts a new WhatsApp chat directly from an online ad on Facebook or Instagram to a personal account. Ms. Srinivasan tells me that this alone is now worth “several billions of dollars” to the tech giant.

Nikila Srinivasan from Meta Meta smiles as she looks at the cameraMeta

Meta’s Nikila Srinivasan says the goal is for companies to increasingly communicate with customers via WhatsApp

Other messaging apps have taken different approaches.

Signal, a platform known for its industry-standard message security protocols, is a nonprofit organization. It says it never took money from investors (unlike the Telegram app, which relies on them).

Instead, it relies on donations – including a $50m (£38m) cash injection from Brian Acton, one of WhatsApp’s co-founders, in 2018.

“Our goal is to come as close as possible to fully supporting small donors, relying on large numbers of modest contributions from people who care about Signal,” its president, Meredith Whittaker, wrote in a blog post last year.

Discord, a messaging app primarily used by young gamers, has a freemium model – signing up is free, but additional features, including access to games, come with a price. It also offers a paid membership called Nitro with benefits like high-quality video streaming and custom emojis for a monthly subscription of $9.99.

Snap, the company behind Snapchat, combines several of these models. It runs ads, has 11 million paid subscribers as of August 2024, and also sells augmented reality glasses called Snapchat Spectacles.

And it has another trick up its sleeve: According to the website Forbes, the company earned nearly $300 million between 2016 and 2023 solely from interest. However, Snap’s main source of revenue is advertising, which brings in more than $4 billion per year.

    Getty ""Getty

UK-based Element requires governments and large organizations to use its secure messaging system. Its customers use the technology, but run it themselves on their own private servers. The ten-year-old company generates “double-digit million sales” and is “close to profitability,” its co-founder Matthew Hodgson tells me.

He believes the most popular business model for messaging apps remains the perennial favorite of the digital age: advertising.

“Basically [many messaging platforms] Sell advertising by watching what people do, who they talk to, and then target them with the best ads,” he says.

The idea is that even with encryption and anonymity, the apps don’t need to see the actual content of the messages shared to find out much about their users, and can then use that data to sell ads.

“It’s the old story: if you don’t pay as a user, you’re probably the product,” adds Mr Hodgson.

Harris outdoes Trump and holds her own in a thrilling Fox interview

Harris outdoes Trump and holds her own in a thrilling Fox interview

By comparison, Trump canceled a scheduled CNBC interview and refused to follow Harris’ lead and continue on “60 Minutes.”

    play

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris sat down for an interview on America’s den of misinformation – Fox News – on Wednesday evening that showed two things:

    1. She has far more courage than her opponent Donald Trump.
    2. Fox News remains an arm of the Republican Party.

First of all, Harris deserves credit for conducting an interview that she and her campaign knew would consist of a series of “gotcha” questions and attempts to get her to say mean things about Trump supporters say, à la Hillary Clinton’s infamous but accurate “basket.” of deplorables.”

By comparison, Trump canceled a scheduled CNBC interview and refused to follow Harris’ lead and continue on “60 Minutes,” preferring to do things like his Fox News town hall on Wednesday, where he faced a room full of Trump supporters were asked coddling questions.

Fox News host Bret Baier constantly interrupted Kamala Harris during the interview

So points go to Harris in the courage department, while Trump maintains his image as a “weak man pretending to be tough.”

Fox News host Bret Baier was the chosen questioner for Harris’ interview, and he behaved like a man who had little respect for what a powerful woman has to say. His questions were pointed, which is fine, and he relentlessly asked follow-up questions, which is also fine. But Baier barely allowed the incumbent vice president to speak, constantly persuading her and interrupting her throughout the interview.

Baier went after Harris with a tenacity and viciousness that his network had never come close to using against Trump.

Trump fans and his many minions at Fox News will no doubt say that Harris failed miserably, but the truth for people operating outside the bubble of insanity is that she more than held her own in a highly controversial situation.

Harris criticized Fox News’ disingenuous Trump clip

At one point, Baier showed a clip — ironically from a previous Fox News softball interview with Trump — in which the former president tried to downplay his recent, heavy-handed ramblings about how Americans who don’t support him are “the enemy within.” “be.

Harris quickly called out Baier: “I’m sorry and with all due respect, that clip was not what he said about the enemy within, what he has repeated when he speaks about the American people.” That’s not that , what you just showed.”

Opinion: Trump is inventing a racist, dystopian version of America that only he can save us from

Would Fox ever ask Trump such questions? Of course not.

During her answer to the first question of the interview, Baier interrupted Harris six times and continued talking over her.

Opinion: An abortion ban killed her. Trump used Fox’s town hall to mock her grieving family.

The questions were rightfully difficult, and the vice president completely dodged some of the tougher references to the Biden administration’s immigration policies. But what the interview showed is that Harris can more than hold her own in an extremely hostile environment, which most people already knew, but Fox News viewers willing to be honest with themselves were probably surprised, when they saw that.

But what matters most is that Harris sat there and took it. She took part in an interview with Fox News — which in itself is a sign that her campaign is confident and trying to expand its reach to conservative and independent voters — and she didn’t storm out. She didn’t whine or insult the interviewer for asking difficult questions.

That’s a lot more than anyone can say about Donald Trump.
