VC hired its first employees after offering to set up payroll for free

VC hired its first employees after offering to set up payroll for free

  • Nichole Wischoff reviewed over 500 applications before making her first hire for her VC fund.
  • Wischoff eventually hired Neal Mintz, a 26-year-old who impressed her with his enthusiasm and drive.
  • During interviews, Mintz offered to do the company’s payroll for free.

This essay is based on a conversation with Nichole Wischoff34, founder of Wischoff Ventures. The following has been edited for length and clarity. Business Insider previously published an essay about their first recruit at Wischoff Ventures. Neal Mintz, and his hiring experience.

Venture capital is an industry where it is difficult to find a job.

If you don’t have rich parents or people in the industry to recommend you, it will be very difficult for you to find someone.

I don’t come from the industry. I’ve worked at startups most of my career and had to brute force my way into starting Wischoff Ventures from scratch.

My journey into venture capital has shaped my approach to recruiting. I wanted to find employees like me – those who maybe didn’t go to Stanford or had some flashy names on their resumes, but were willing to surpass one of those people.

Search 500 applications to find the perfect employee

I began recruiting for my fund’s first full-time position earlier this year. I posted the job on LinkedIn and X and received over 500 applications.

Although it seemed like a lot, it wasn’t difficult to distill the numbers. For one, 30% of applications were rejected because I needed someone based in San Francisco or New York. These applicants either did not live there or had no intention of moving there.

Another 30% of applications came primarily from people working in investment banking.

While these candidates had strong financial knowledge, they weren’t quite what I was looking for. Understanding ventures, especially those in the early stages, is very different from what one does in banking.

Another 20% of applicants were rejected because their documents contained spelling errors.

Some candidates even spelled my name wrong, which bothered me. If your job is to acquire business and you don’t even get your prospect’s name right, you won’t get a response from them.

I ended up taking calls with about 25 candidates.

One candidate who caught my eye and later hired me was Neal Mintz.

Neal was just so determined to get this job.

Neal basically hired himself

Nichole Wischoff and Neal Mintz sit on a sofa.

Neal eventually became Nichole Wischoff’s first full-time employee, beating out over 500 applicants.

Neal Mintz

I interviewed Neal for three weeks. We had three calls before meeting in person. Not only did I guide him through the work, I also took him to a founder pitch and got him to give me his opinion after the meeting.

What impressed me about Neal was how well prepared he was. During our conversations, I learned that Neal already knew a lot about my portfolio, be it the companies I invested in or the areas I was excited about. He had detailed questions about specific companies.

At one point I mentioned that I would need to set up a payroll system since I had been running the fund alone. Neal offered to help with this for free, showing what a hustler he was.

You could say that Neal practically hired himself because he was very aggressive, in a good way, when it came to getting the job.

I’m looking for people who are willing to run through walls

If you want a career in venture capital, you need to be determined. Don’t give up and don’t take no for an answer.

Whether it’s applying for a job or looking for a deal, if you want to have any chance at all, you need to be overly prepared for your meetings.

I want to look for people who are willing to walk through walls every day at work.

Of course, I will never ask you to clean a bathroom, but I need to know that you would be willing to do it if I asked.

I don’t care if you come in as my chief of staff or as a general partner, you have to be ready to roll up your sleeves and get things done. I want to hire people who don’t give up, don’t give up, and are determined to get things done no matter what.

Fox News’ Bret Baier claims the Harris campaign tried to steal time for the interview

Fox News’ Bret Baier claims the Harris campaign tried to steal time for the interview

Fox News “Special Report” host Bret Baier claimed Wednesday that Kamala Harris’ campaign team cut short the time he had with her just before a highly anticipated interview — and then made the vice president show up late let.

Baier, a veteran political journalist, likened the Harris campaign’s tactics to a football team “icing the kicker” before a key field goal attempt.

“So we were supposed to start at 5pm – that was the time they originally gave us. We’ll do 25 or 30 minutes,” the host explained.

“They came in and said, ‘Well, maybe 20 [minutes]. So it’s already been cut,” Baier added.

“And then the vice president showed up around 5:15 p.m [p.m.].”

The “Special Report” host noted that Harris’ lateness made it a challenge for his production team to get the interview out at the start of his 6 p.m. show.

“We pushed ourselves to the limit,” said Baier.

“So that’s how it started. And when we started talking, I knew she was going to be tough to, you know, redirect without me trying to interrupt her,” he continued, referencing the Democratic candidate’s efforts to “filibuster” during the interview “ and not allow him to do it. Please have your say for a moment.

In his post-interview analysis, Baier also revealed that he had hoped to ask more questions, but several Harris campaign staffers gave him frantic off-camera signals to end the interview because his time was up.

“I’m talking about four people waving their hands like it has to stop,” he said. “In the end I had to get off.”

Baier noted that he believed Harris went into the interview with the “goal” of reinforcing her talking points regardless of the question asked.

“Usually you can breathe, so to speak,” Baier said, referring to his efforts to get Harris to answer his inquiries directly.

“Sometimes when you filibuster, you try to create a moment,” he added. “And I think that was their goal.”

Harris, 59, dodged several questions from Fox News hosts during the session, including questions about immigration, border security and President Biden’s mental decline.

The Post has reached out to the Harris campaign for comment.

Indonesia’s free meals plan is in the spotlight as Prabowo prepares to take office

Indonesia’s free meals plan is in the spotlight as Prabowo prepares to take office

By Dewi Kurniawati

SUKABUMI, Indonesia (Reuters) – Indonesian sixth-grader Shakila Fitriyani, a day laborer’s daughter who dreams of becoming a doctor, says she prefers going to school these days because she is served free lunch.

“I am happy about the nutritious meal, milk and fruit,” Shakila said in her small house with a tiled roof and bamboo umbrellas in the green highlands of West Java.

“That made me curious to go to school.”

Since January, the 11-year-old has been one of the thousands of students who have received a lunch – for example, consisting of rice with a seasoned, hard-boiled egg, fried vegetables and a carton of milk and a slice of melon.

They are part of a pilot program in the province aimed at fulfilling a campaign promise by new President Prabowo Subianto, a $28 million effort to provide meals to 83 million children and pregnant women nationwide.

But the effort drew criticism from investors and ratings agencies, raising questions about how they could be financed without denting Indonesia’s recently hard-won reputation for fiscal prudence at a time when logistics across the sprawling archipelago remain challenging.

Prabowo, who will take office from incumbent Joko Widodo on Sunday, says the program is crucial to combat stunting, which affects 21.5% of children under five, and can be done within the framework of fiscal prudence be implemented.

To address fiscal concerns, Prabowo has capped first-year spending at 71 trillion rupees ($4.6 billion) to keep the annual budget deficit below the legal cap of 3% of GDP.

However, Eliza Mardian, an economist at the Center of Reform on Economics think tank, said the budget may not be enough, especially because milk Indonesia imports is expensive.

“Given our tight fiscal situation, there is a possibility of a budget increase that will lead to additional debt,” she said. “This will be a financial burden for us in the future.”

If the program requires more food imports, it could also worsen Indonesia’s balance of payments, already a major importer of wheat, rice, soybeans, beef and dairy products.

On the other hand, Prabowo describes the program as one of the main drivers of economic growth, ultimately expected to create an estimated 2.5 million jobs and boost demand for local products.

The president-elect has promised to accelerate GDP growth to 8% from the current 5%.

BUSY KITCHENS

To ensure the broader nutrition campaign gets under way by January, Prabowo, now defense minister, called on Widodo’s government in August to set up a new National Nutrition Agency, led by Dadan Hindayana, the head of his nutrition program.

Initially, 3 million students will receive meals, with the number expected to double by April and reach 15 million by July, Dadan told reporters this month, with at least 5,000 kitchens set to be set up across the country.

They are likely to be modeled on dozens of pilot kitchens that tested the concept for months.

Since the beginning of this year, a kitchen in the city of Sukabumi in West Java has employed about 50 people as cooks, food delivery people, drivers and dishwashers to prepare 3,300 meals a day for 20 schools.

The activity begins before dawn when fresh meals are prepared on a monthly menu designed by a certified nutritionist to maximize the use of locally sourced ingredients, said head chef Pahmi Idris, with a budget of Rs 15,000 per meal.

School staff help track how meals affect the height and weight of students, who typically sit cross-legged on the floor and eat from segmented metal trays.

But the pilot showed that an early task of the program would be convincing children to eat vegetables, Pahmi said, since they, uneaten, accounted for the majority of wasted food.

“We know kids don’t like vegetables,” Pahmi said. “We need to educate them more about eating vegetables.”

Indonesia’s diverse communities and different geography could also make it difficult to set up kitchens across the country, said analyst Izzudin Al Farras Adha of the Jakarta-based Institute for Development of Economics and Finance.

Experts have also said that better nutrition for school-age children comes too late to address stunting, requiring complex remedies, from improved sanitation and hygiene to better maternal nutrition.

But the program’s benefits are real, Sukabumi residents said.

Roby Nurdin, a fruit and vegetable supplier, said the kitchen business had doubled his income and benefited farmers.

And more and more students are coming to class, said Lastri Samtiawati, a teacher at Shakila’s school, who gets her meals from the sukabumi kitchen.

“Students are more active,” she added. “I now understand the direct impact of good nutrition on children.”

Football heads west to play the UTEP Miners

Football heads west to play the UTEP Miners

Adrian Benitez | Staff writer

The FIU football team will play the UTEP Miners in the Sun Bowl in El Paso on Wednesday, October 16, 2024.

In their last game, the Panthers nearly pulled off a monumental victory, taking the undefeated Liberty Flames to overtime. Unfortunately, the offense fumbled the game, which ended in a 31-24 loss, increasing the Panthers record to 2-4.

However, while the Flames were undefeated, this week’s opponent looks very different. The Miners enter this matchup having lost each of their six games, including a loss to FCS Southern Utah.

The Miners’ last game was a 44-17 loss to Western Kentucky. The Miners were down 20 points at halftime and never really got going in the game.

UTEP’s record is reflected in the statistics. Offensively, the Miners’ points per game (16), yards per game (323) and rushing yards per game (98.3) all rank in the bottom three among C-USA teams.

Their defense isn’t much better. The unit allows 34.5 points and 443.3 yards per game as well as 235.5 rushing yards per game. These stats are all in the bottom four of the conference.

The passing game is the saving grace of the Miners, who rank fifth in the conference with 225 yards per game. Additionally, their pass defense allows just 207.8 yards per game, ranking second in the conference.

UTEP can’t even catch a break on special teams, as their field goal percentage (.571) and average yards per punt (35.5) both rank last in the conference.

As for players, Miners second-year quarterback Skylar Locklear has completed 77 of his 121 passes for a 63.6 completion percentage, three touchdowns and four interceptions on the season.

Among Locklear’s receivers, second-year wide receiver Kenny Odom was the most productive. He has 19 catches for 435 yards and 4 touchdowns this season, averaging 22.9 yards per reception and 72.5 yards per game.

If the Panthers want to win in this game, they will have to set the tone in the passing game. If they can eliminate the Miners’ main strengths in passing attack and defense, the Panthers should emerge victorious.

Looking to get back in the win column, the FIU football team travels to El Paso, Texas to face the UTEP Miners in the Sun Bowl on Wednesday, October 16, 2024.

Kickoff is scheduled for 9 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network.

forecast: FIU 24, UTEP 13
