Hurricane Isaac and Tropical Storm Joyce are moving far from land through the open Atlantic

MIAMI (AP) — Hurricane Isaac was a Category 2 storm far from land in the North Atlantic on Saturday, while Tropical Storm Joyce continued its path over open water in the eastern Caribbean.

Isaac had maximum sustained winds of 100 miles per hour (155 km/h) and was located about 645 miles (1,040 kilometers) west-northwest of the Azores archipelago, which lies west of mainland Portugal. It was moving northeast at a speed of 18 miles per hour (30 km/h), according to the National Hurricane Center.

Far to the south, Joyce had maximum sustained winds of 45 mph (75 km/h) and was centered about 1,080 miles (1,735 kilometers) east of the Northern Leeward Islands, which lie on the eastern ring of the Caribbean. The hurricane center reported that it was moving west-northwest at a speed of 9 miles per hour (15 km/h).

Neither storm posed a threat to the country, forecasters said, and both were expected to weaken in the coming days.

Hurricane Helenewhich made landfall early Friday as a Category 4 storm, leaving a huge trail of destruction across the southeastern United States and killing at least 56 people.
