Tam, Redwood is headed to the field hockey finals

Sophomore Claire Johnson scored two goals to help the Redwood High field hockey team beat University 2-1 in Wednesday’s MCAL semifinals. Top-seeded Tam scored two goals in the fourth quarter and edged No. 4 seed Marin Catholic 3-2 in the other semifinal.

The Red-tailed Hawks (14-2-1) will host the championship game against Redwood (13-2-2) on Friday at 4 p.m. The Giants have won the last five MCAL titles after beating University 3-2 last season.

Tam won the first meeting of the season against Redwood 2-0 on September 10th before the two teams played to a 0-0 draw on October 4th.

Girls volleyball

Katie Murphy had 20 kills and three blocks and Maddie Booth added 24 digs to lead Marin Academy to a 25-20, 18-25, 25-14, 25-19 victory over Convent in the Bay Counties League West semifinals on Wednesday .

Muriel Harris added eight kills and six blocks for MA (17-10), which advances to Saturday’s title game against University. Ellie Yasuda contributed 26 assists for the Wildcats.

Girls tennis

Jordan Marotto defeated Maya Riisgaard 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while Redwood remained undefeated in the league after a 6-1 win over Tam on Wednesday. The Giants (16-0), who also got singles wins from Julia Povio and Julia Laury, receive a first-round bye and host a semifinal on Thursday.

Siena Moglen picked up the lone win at No. 2 singles for Tam (12-4), opening the MCAL playoffs as a No. 3 seed.

  • Clare Zhu and Deepti Bhat picked up wins at No. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, as San Marin prepared for the playoffs with a 7-0 win over Terra Linda on Wednesday. The Mustangs (10-6) were already a No. 4 seed in next week’s MCAL playoffs and will host No. 5 Marin Catholic on Tuesday.
  • Archie Williams defeated San Rafael 7-0 on Wednesday and set up an MCAL play-in game against Terra Linda on Friday. The Trojans (5-11) are scheduled to host the Peregrine Falcons (5-11) after the teams split their two regular-season meetings. Maya Evans and Siena Michelson led Archie’s victories in 1st and 2nd place. The winner of the play-in will face Tam on Tuesday.
  • Paloma Vano-Rice and Simone Schacter emerged victorious at the top of the singles rankings as Branson secured second place in next week’s MCAL playoffs with a 7-0 win over Novato on Wednesday. The Bulls (14-2) receive a first-round bye and will host a semifinal on Thursday.

Prepare football

Marin Catholic tight end/defensive end Jordan Rogers announced via social media that he has committed to play for UC Davis next season. UC Davis already has a number of former Marin Catholics on its roster, including Michael Ingrassia, Matteo Perez, Gaven Cooke, Greer Arthur and Trent Carrade.

Water polo for boys

Vincent Krilanovich and Jake Carrera each scored three goals to lead Archie Williams past host Marin Academy 13-5 on Wednesday and finish the regular season undefeated against MCAL opponents.

The Peregrine Falcons (19-2, 8-0 MCAL) secured first place in the MCAL tournament with an earlier win over second-seeded Redwood (21-2, 7-1). Archie Williams has one final clash against Miramonte in a non-league game on Thursday.

The Wildcats (13-6, 5-3) got four goals from Matthew Giaque. Goalkeeper Lachlan Baldauf scored a full-length shot that found the back of the net. Marin Academy is scheduled to finish the regular season on Friday against non-league opponent Cardinal Newman.

  • Bern Kent scored five goals and added four steals to help Tam defeat Novato 13-5 on Wednesday. Andres Sternfels added four steals and five assists for Tam (13-10, 6-3), which enters next week’s MCAL playoffs as a No. 4 seed.
  • Ossie Joplin led the team in scoring as Redwood earned an important 12-8 win over Terra Linda on Tuesday. The victory was the seventh straight league victory for the Giants (21-2, 7-1), who needed the win to stay ahead of the Trojans (11-8, 5-2) in second place. The regular season ends with an MCAL play-in game on Thursday, or Friday if necessary. The MCAL playoffs take place next week on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Water polo for girls

Holly Hovey fueled Archie Williams High’s attack and Elsa Kastner scored the winning goal with 12 seconds left in the game as the Peregrine Falcons defeated host Marin Academy 8-7 on Wednesday to clinch the No. 1 seed in the MCAL playoffs.

Kastner’s shot went up and bounced off the hands of Wildcats goalkeeper Caroline Starrett, but the ball fell behind Starrett for the game-winning goal. Hovey finished the game with a team-high four goals for the Falcons (16-3, 9-0 MCAL).

Hannah Reichley and Kelly Kurtzig each scored two goals for Marin Academy (18-5, 8-1), which took a 4-1 lead early in the second period. Hovey tied the Falcons with two goals and tied the score by halftime.

The top six teams advance to the MCAL playoffs, which begin Tuesday at Archie Williams.

  • Redwood defeated Terra Linda 12-6 on Tuesday in another game with playoff implications. The Giants (10-8, 5-3) were a full game ahead of TL (8-8, 4-4) and Marin Catholic (12-8, 4-4) for fourth place.
