All 3 of David Gordon Green’s Halloween Movies, Ranked

There’s no telling what the slasher genre would look like today without Michael Myers and the others Halloween Franchise. This iconic collection of films is undeniably one of the most iconic and recurring horror series in the history of modern cinema, terrifying audiences since its debut John CarpenterThe 1978 original. The story of unhinged serial killer Michael Myers, who stalks and slaughters the streets of his hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois, continues to thrill audiences and is now immortalized in the annals of horror pop culture. Since his first film, twelve episodes have kept his spirit and massive kill count alive – none more so recently Halloween Reboot trilogy from the director David Gordon Green.

In many ways, the reboot trilogy is a love letter to the 1978 classic. It continues that film directly and captures much of its style and tone. Co-creator John Carpenter even returned as executive producer, creative consultant and composer to help make this trilogy fit into the same universe as his original. They just stay true to the first and leave out many of the storylines established in the previous sequels, most notably the storyline involving Michael and his nemesis Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) are long-lost siblings. Gordon Green’s films bring Michael Myers to modern audiences, ensuring he remains relevant in the public eye and continuing his story. Although it has become an integral part of Halloween’s legacy, it is a flawed trilogy that starts strong but quickly loses quality with each new installment. They all have their highlights and some weak points, but overall it’s a remarkable trilogy that’s worth a few rewatches and discussions. So, from worst to best, here is every entry in David Gordon Green Halloween Reboot franchise, ranked.

3 “Halloween Ends” (2022)

Cast: Jamie Lee Curtis, Andi Matichak, Will Patton, Rohan Campbell and James Jude Courtney

In third place is Halloween endsreleased in 2022 as the final chapter of the reboot trilogy. Despite attempting to have a good ending, this is often viewed as the franchise’s weakest, a major disappointment that many fans would agree with as it did not provide a satisfying counterbalance to the supposedly epic final battle. For some surprising reason, Michael (James Jude Courtney) and Laurie are removed from much of the action, and the film instead decides to focus on a newly introduced character, Corey Cunningham (Rohan Campbell), a troubled child who is ostracized by the community and viewed as a murderer after a terrible accident. Eventually he becomes corrupted and taken under Michael’s wing, and the two go on a killing spree. But as his bloodlust increases, Corey becomes obsessed with becoming the new Boogeyman of Haddonfield.

Ends The biggest mistake was downplaying the importance of Laurie and Michael. They’re turned into supporting characters as Corey runs much of the show until he’s simply dismissed in the final act so the real stars can have their final battle. It’s a big problem to introduce and focus on a new character so late in the franchise when all viewers want to see is the epic showdown. But even the final fight between Michael and Laurie isn’t that impressive. The end of Halloween Kills established that their final confrontation would be emotional, vicious and far more personal, but here it is short, has no build-up and only took place in the last twenty minutes. Plus, it seemed unlikely that the movie would boldly kill off Laurie, so it seemed pretty obvious that the ending would go in her favor, and eventually it did. In total, Halloween ends wasn’t the conclusion fans were hoping for, but to give the film credit, it’s notable in its attempt to try something new and explore different avenues. It’s not the worst of the Halloween series, but when compared to the other two in Green’s trilogy, it unfortunately ranks last.

2 “Halloween Kills” (2021)

Cast: Jamie Lee Curtis, Judy Greer, Andi Matichak, Will Patton and James Jude Courtney

Halloween Kills is the centerpiece of the trilogy and is often viewed by audiences as the most controversial entry. Although it is a straightforward sequel to the previous installment, it is much less story-focused and lacks much of the plot. But to make up for its shortcomings, it features some pretty impressive gore and some of the best kills in the entire series. The story is about Laurie’s daughter Karen (Judy Greer) and granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak). At the same time, Laurie becomes bedridden in the hospital after sustaining injuries during her fight with Michael on her property. Along with several frightened residents of Haddonfield, they set out to kill the figure when they realize he is still at large. But stopping Michael proves to be far more difficult than expected as he seemingly becomes more indestructible with each new kill.

Everyone goes in Halloween Kills If you have high expectations, you might be a little disappointed. Although it has its scary moments, it lacks much of the suspense and suspense that its predecessor created. Some may even feel that the film went too far, overcompensating for the violence and gore to make up for the weak script and lackluster storytelling. But I have to acknowledge that while the story and characters aren’t anything special, they aren’t insultingly bad either, and that doesn’t tarnish or diminish anything positive about the 2018 film. Regardless of whether audiences can get behind the film’s excessive gore or not, they have to admit that it’s pretty intense and spectacular to watch at times. Despite being a very flawed film that never lives up to the previous films, it is still an entertaining film every now and then. There is action and tension to enjoy as long as viewers can overlook some of the frustrating parts.

1 “Halloween” (2018)

Cast: Jamie Lee Curtis, Judy Greer, Andi Matichak, Haluk Bilginer and James Jude Courtney

This is number one Halloween reboot Film from 2018. Undeniably, this represents the best installment of David Gordon Green’s trilogy, perhaps one of the most notable entries in the entire franchise. Set 40 years after the events of the first film, Laurie Strode has dedicated her life to the night that Michael Myers escapes from prison again to finish what he started. Once her fears become reality and Michael is unleashed, she is ready to turn the tables on her former enemy, this time with the help of her family.

With the right tone, some serious suspense and a few clever callbacks, it’s 2018 Halloween really feels like a direct sequel to the original. After a break of more than decades after… Rob Zombie Remake films provided the much-needed boost that the series and fans were desperately hoping for. It was fresh and went back to basics, I try to capture everything that made Carpenter’s classic one of the greats. While the first Halloween will always be the best of the series and one of the most iconic slashers of all time, but Green’s impressive revival remains a worthy successor that deserves its praise.
