Dalton Knecht’s significant impact on the Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers have brought back most of their roster from a season ago and are re-running them with the same starting lineup. This time they have a different coach in JJ Redick, who made an impressive debut with the Lakers as they won their season opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Lakers had the 17th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft and there were rumors that they had their sights set on a wing all along. They were reportedly stunned that Tennessee’s Dalton Knecht fell to their spot, and at that point it was a no-brainer for them to get the talented winger. In college, Knecht averaged 21 points while shooting 45% from the field and 39% from behind the arc.

The 6-foot-6 winger will have a significant impact on offense for the Lakers. Knecht can shoot really well off the catch and dribble, which is great since they have several talented playmakers who will find him for open shot attempts.

More than just a versatile shooter, he’s also a solid athlete with some acumen. Knecht is a three-level scorer who knows how to get shots. The Lakers really didn’t add any depth in the offseason, so they’ll rely heavily on Knecht to be a consistent scorer for them right from the start.

If the rookie can be efficient as a scorer, it will take a lot of pressure off the Lakers’ starting lineup. In his rookie debut, Knecht recorded the second-most minutes played and the best plus-minus ratio among reserve players. If he continues to improve and become comfortable in his role, there’s a chance he could compete for Rookie of the Year honors and likely make an NBA All-Rookie team.
