Utah State Cross Country concludes the regular season at the Utah Open

LOGAN, Utah – The Utah State men’s and women’s cross country teams will conclude their regular season competition this weekend at the Utah Open on Thursday, October 24, in Salt Lake City, Utah, at Sugar House Park.

AGGIES IN THE POLLS

Utah State men’s cross country jumped from No. 30 to No. 19 in the NCAA DI Cross Country National Coaches’ Poll this week. This is the men’s highest national ranking since 2021. The Aggie men are also ranked No. 4 in the Mountain Region rankings, while the women are ranked No. 7 regionally.

Aggie runners won Mountain West weekly awards with freshmen on Oct. 15 Joshua Armstrong Winner of the Men’s Athlete and Freshman of the Week awards, senior Sammi Lee Athlete of the Week winner and freshman Ava Trimble Winner of the Women’s Freshman of the Week award. It marked the first time a school has won all four cross country awards since the conference began handing out Freshman of the Week awards in 2021. These individual awards came after Utah State won the team titles at the USU-hosted Steve T. Reeder Memorial Invitational on Oct. 11.

YOUTH MOVEMENT

Five Aggies have already won Mountain West men’s Freshman of the Week honors this season. Freshmen Jedidiah Megargel won the weekly awards after placing seventh at the Utah State Alumni Challenge on Aug. 31 as a freshman Luke Stockett won the award thanks to a 21st-place finish at the BYU Autumn Classic on Sept. 13 as a freshman Michael Moffat won the award after his seventh-place finish at the UC Riverside Invitational on Sept. 21 as a freshman Joshua McKee earned the honor after a 14th-place finish at the Paul Short Run on Oct. 5 and was a freshman Joshua Armstrong earned Freshman and Athlete of the Week honors with his third-place finish at the Steve T. Reeder Memorial Invitational on Oct. 11. Utah State is the first cross country program in Mountain West history to win a specific individual award five consecutive times. and the first Mountain West program in any sport to have five different athletes capture the same honor in consecutive weeks.

LAST WEEK

The Utah State cross country teams had strong team performances in two different events this past weekend. At the 2024 Wisconsin Pre-Nationals, the Aggie men placed 11th out of 32 teams in the men’s 8K with 407 points, beating eight nationally ranked teams. graduate Camren Todd finished 17th with a time of 23:10.1 to lead USU. The USU women placed 14th out of 29 teams in the women’s 6K race with 376 points, led by the sophomore Natalie Swains 57th place with a time of 21:37.6. The Princeton Fall Classic features the Utah State women’s team, led by the senior Emma Thornley 16th place, time of 20:09.5, 185 points, good for 7th out of 22 teams.
