Here’s why Republican lawmakers aren’t surprised by this telltale revelation about Iran

Republican lawmakers who have warned of an Iranian influence campaign specifically targeting Democrats on Capitol Hill and Democratic presidential administrations are not surprised by the recent revelation of top-secret intelligence from the Pentagon. The leak revealed over the weekend shows that someone with a top-secret security clearance passed US information to Iran about Israel’s attack plans in the country.

More about Semafor’s influencer campaign:

In the spring of 2014, senior Iranian Foreign Ministry officials launched a quiet attempt to strengthen Tehran’s image and position on global security issues – particularly its nuclear program – by building relationships with a network of influential foreign academics and researchers. They called it the Iran Experts Initiative.

The scope and scale of the IEI project has emerged from a large volume of correspondence and emails from the Iranian government, first reported by Semafor and Iran International. Officials who worked under moderate President Hassan Rouhani congratulated themselves on the initiative’s impact. At least two of the people on the State Department’s list were or became top aides to Robert Malley, the Biden administration’s special envoy to Iran, who was placed on leave in June of this year after his security clearance was suspended. A third was hired by the think tank Malley was running when he left for the State Department.

The FBI is currently conducting an investigation into who leaked the information, but the pace is unsatisfactory.

“There is a complete lack of urgency. This is very, very serious. It couldn’t be more serious, especially, as I said, when Israel is fighting for its existence every day and carrying out important operations. “The fact that this classified information was leaked not only damages our credibility with our allies around the world when it comes to information sharing, but I am also concerned about this administration’s lack of urgency,” Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik said during of an interview with Fox News on Monday. “This should never happen again. “Immediate criminal action must be taken and referred to the Department of Justice, and this person who broke the law by disclosing confidential information should be in prison.”

However, there is a suspect.
