Seattle Seahawks open practice window for Abraham Lucas and George Fant

Seattle Seahawks designated offensive tackles George Fant and Abraham Lucas return to practice, giving both players the 21-day window before they must be activated to the active roster.

After releasing cornerback Eric Garror on Tuesday, the team also signed cornerback Damarion Williams to its practice squad – a fourth-round pick of the Baltimore Ravens out of Houston in 2022.

Lucas, who is the starting player when in good health, has played just six games since the start of the 2023 season and underwent knee surgery last offseason. He has been recovering from a chronic knee problem about which the team has released very few details.

He began the 2024 season on the physically unable to perform list after failing to complete all of training camp. He missed at least the first four games of the season.

Fant was brought in to replace Lucas in the offseason, but suffered a knee injury in Seattle’s season opener against the Denver Broncos. He was later placed on injured reserve. Stone Forsythe started the next five games in Fant’s place, but missed the Seahawks’ Week 7 game against the Atlanta Falcons due to a hand injury.

That left Seattle without fourth-string right tackle Michael Jerrell, and the sixth-round rookie made his first NFL start last Sunday.

Since training camp, new Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald has been asked weekly about Lucas’ status in particular. Macdonald was always vague until he hinted on Monday that Lucas might return this week. Even though his training window is now open, it will likely be some time before Lucas plays on matchdays.

“There is a situation where he could come back this week and start training, but we haven’t finalized that yet,” Macdonald said on Monday. “But things are looking good with Abe up front [Lucas]. There is a process to get him ready to play. So even if he were to start training, I think you have to consider a good chunk of training time to get him ready for a game.”

Still, it’s an encouraging step for the Seahawks to get their offensive line back to full strength. Lucas was one of the standout rookies of the 2022 season after being selected in the third round, with Seattle seemingly finding two cornerstone right tackles in Lucas and first-rounder Charles Cross.

Once Lucas returns to the field on game days, he will still need to prove he can stay healthy – something he struggled with after his injury in 2023.
