Louisville Football Redshirt Tracker: Week Nine 2024

Louisville Football Redshirt Tracker: Week Nine 2024

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – We are just halfway through the 2024 season for the Louisville football program. While we already have an idea of who will redshirt this season, there are a few players we should keep an eye on.

As a reminder, a player can play up to four games in a season while retaining his redshirt – allowing him an additional year of eligibility beyond the normal allotment of four. Play more than that and you’ve lost your chance to earn a redshirt this season.

There are some complicating factors such as: B. Injury waivers or older players who were granted an extra year due to the COVID pandemic in 2020. But beyond that, D1 players — according to the NCAA’s official site — have five calendar years to play four non-redshirt competitive seasons.

So who can still afford a redshirt, and who has missed their chance? Below you will find our full tracker, separated into different categories:

True Newbie:

*Games in brackets. Bold without brackets indicates missed redshirt opportunity.

Isaac Brown, Maurice Davis and Duke Watson had already missed their chance to redshirt before the game in Miami.

The only other true freshman to see any playing time outside of the Austin Peay game was Jathan Hatch, who suited up on special teams against Virginia. Although he didn’t play against Miami.

Players in the 2020 Post-HS Class who have not yet redshirted:

*Games in brackets. Bold without brackets indicates missed redshirt opportunity.

Most of the players in this category are major contributors to the team and had long since missed their chance to redshirt before the Miami game.

Of note, Antonio Meeks did not play for the second straight game while on the redshirt threshold. He has had minimal success this season (just 38 total snaps in four games played). So unless there are injuries at wide receiver or special teams, we will have to consider the possibility of a redshirt.

Jeff Brohm noted during his pregame press conference in Miami that they would try to get Maurice Turner back on the practice field this week, but did not provide an update this week. With only five games left in the regular season and no exact return date yet, a redshirt year isn’t out of the question.

Like Selah Brown, he has not yet played due to an undisclosed injury, so it appears he is a redshirt candidate.

Class of 2020 players entering their senior year with either a COVID year or a normal redshirt remaining:

*Games in brackets. Bold without brackets indicates missed redshirt opportunity.

Tamarion McDonald, Dezmond Tell and Corey Thornton have played four full seasons in the past, are in their COVID year and had already crossed the redshirt threshold before the Miami game.

He has played the last four games with Lacy after missing the first three games due to a broken collarbone. Unless the injury re-aggravates or another injury occurs, he will likely take advantage of his last chance to redshirt this weekend.

He, along with Jadon Thompson, is out for the rest of the season after suffering a knee injury against Georgia Tech. However, he still has his normal redshirt remaining, as he played three full seasons at Cincinnati and one full season at Louisville last year. He can use that this season for a possible return in 2025.

Lance Robinson took advantage of his extra COVID year in 2020 when he played just three games at MTSU as a true freshman. He then played a full 2021 season at MTSU, followed by a full 2022 season at Houston. While he only played in one game last season in his first year at Louisville, that counts as a full season due to then-NCAA eligibility rules, which were changed during bowl season to allow him to play in the Holiday Bowl. With Robinson out for the season due to an injury suffered in fall camp, he will wear his normal redshirt this season, allowing him to return in 2025.

Mason Reiger didn’t play a game in 2020, but took advantage of his COVID year for this season and has played three “full” seasons since. He was about to play his senior year this season, but since he is still sidelined due to complications from offseason knee surgery, he will likely take his normal redshirt this year and return in 2025 — as long as he doesn’t have more than four Games plays games.
