What did you think of Kyle Shanahan’s postgame chat with Brock Purdy at 49ers HC?

The San Francisco 49ers suffered a terrible 28-18 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs last weekend, leaving them 3-4 on the season in one of their worst games of the year.

Things were particularly difficult offensively as the 49ers struggled to move the ball without top receivers Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel and Jauan Jennings as both their running game and passing game struggled in the loss.

Quarterback Brock Purdy had one of his toughest games in recent memory, throwing three interceptions for the second time in his career.

Following the game, several reporters pointed out a postgame conversation between head coach Kyle Shanahan and quarterback Brock Purdy at his locker that lasted several minutes. Was there anything else special or was it just a normal postgame chat between the two?

“We just talked about a few things and just a few moments during the game and how we can get better in the future. It was really just that,” Purdy clarified after the game.

“We just talked like we always do. “I just didn’t realize that y’all were behind me and spying on us,” Shanahan confirmed with a laugh on Monday. “But it was just great to talk to the boys after the game. I was walking back and he was standing right there, so we stopped and started talking. I didn’t, it really got to me, I forgot everyone was still in there. We just hung out and talked about the game and stuff like that. And then when I looked back, you kind of scared me. I didn’t know everyone was feeling so bad. But there was just what we all do: we talk.”

When it comes to Purdy’s performance, the head coach was clear, noting that his quarterback has played well this year, but that type of play isn’t the standard.

“[Watching the film, it’s] It’s the same with the other quarterback on the other side. I know Brock would love to have those three picks back,” Shanahan said. “He had nothing to offer on the last shot in the red zone, but he has to sit there and take the sack so we can kick a field goal and make it a six-point game.”

“We have coach points for every single game, so I can’t give you a general description of the individual coach points. But every piece is different. Brock has had a damn good year, but yesterday he didn’t have a particularly good game, or his best game. And that’s just why I’m a little late here. I just went through all of these 70-plus, 80-plus plays and found something out of them all, not just for Brock, but for everyone.”

Purdy’s last two interceptions were particularly notable as the quarterback missed the target while targeting Ronnie Bell on a pass that he and Shanahan laid off to the signal-caller. Then there was an interception in the red zone, where Purdy was hit while throwing and faced a rusher coming from the right side.

“I think I definitely need to play better, just with my shots and some decisions,” Purdy said after the game. “It’s pretty simple. Of course I have to watch the film and stuff, but my immediate reaction is that I have to play better. The second interception went my way again. Ronnie did his job. I thought he was just constricted. I didn’t know where he was going to end up on his route, so I just tried to put him on and he ended up doing pretty well. So Ronnie did his job. It was up to me.”

Obviously, the outlook was very different for San Francisco, as they expected to play with both Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel before unfortunate circumstances arose in both situations that resulted in a number of inexperienced substitutes seeing key representation during the game.

As a result, the game just looked bad for the 49ers offense, while Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo seemed creative as ever when it came to applying pressure, which led to fits in the passing game that lasted through most of the game game.

Purdy will look to bounce back next weekend when the 49ers take on the Dallas Cowboys at Levi’s Stadium, looking to enter the bye week at .500 after another loss last weekend.

But the message was clear: Purdy needs to play better after a tough loss and the turnovers need to be mitigated.
