Kirby Smart comments on Georgia’s game-winning fourth quarter performance against Texas

Georgia football played one of its best halves of football in the first half of its win over Texas on Saturday. The offense may have started slowly, but the defense played brilliantly and kept the Bulldogs in the game until the offense got going. Georgia’s 23-0 lead at halftime is unlikely to happen again for a long time against one of the top teams in the country.

And while that was extremely impressive, it wasn’t the most impressive thing Georgia did against Texas.

The Longhorns stormed back in the second half, cutting Georgia’s lead to 23-15 after a controversial interception call by the officials. Georgia’s back was against the wall, the Texas crowd was back in the game, and it looked like there was a chance Georgia could lose this game.

But then the offense went on an 11-play, 89-yard drive in the fourth quarter to seal the game for Georgia.

This was by far the best performance of the season for the offense, an opinion shared by head coach Kirby Smart.

“Yeah, that was special,” Smart said, via dawgnation.com. “I told them after the game, the one thing this offense has shown, aside from being inconsistent at times, is incredible resilience. If you think about the games we took part in, we had to react to a result.” . It feels like someone scores a goal in the second half. I feel like that’s what happened at Alabama because it was great resilience the whole second half, and that’s a quality, even though there may be higher-level qualities, that’s a very high-level quality that not all teams have.

Now we all know Georgia’s offense hasn’t been good enough lately. Carson Beck struggled with turnovers and his receivers also had problems catching the ball. But the one thing this group is particularly good at is reacting when their backs are against the wall.

And as Smart mentions, that’s one of the best qualities anyone can have. Of course, we’d probably prefer the offense to be more consistent, because imagine how much better Georgia would be if they were. But as the group works on it, it’s nice to know that we can trust this group when adversity strikes.

So once the offense figures out how to operate more consistently, this group (and the entire team, for that matter) will be very scary for any opponent.
