In September 1978, serial killer Rodney Alcala took part in the dating game.

The killer’s appearance in the series happened unbeknownst to the producers, in the middle of his killing spree.

Hosted by the late Jim Lange, The dating The game was popular across the states and ran from 1965 to 1999.

In the matchmaking series, a single woman asked questions of three potential dates hidden behind a screen.

She then chose a man based on which answers to her questions she liked best.

On Alcala’s episode of “The Dating Game,” Cheryl Bradshaw was the single woman asking the questions — and she chose him.

However, she backed out of the date after a “creepy” encounter with him backstage.

This decision likely saved her life, as he was convicted as a serial killer just a year later.

Seat from hell

One person who knows this story all too well is Jed Mills.

At the time, he was an actor looking for work, so he signed up for the show and became Bachelor #2.

Anna Kendrick stars in “The Woman of the Hour,” about Rodney Alcala, a murderer in the midst of a crime spree

This meant that he was sitting in the middle of the trio of men and was also next to the murderer Alcala.

In an interview with ABC’s 20/20 in 2021, he described Alcala as “creepy” and said he had “bizarre views.”

“I was really surprised he won,” Jed remembers. “I didn’t believe his smile. I didn’t believe his charm and I didn’t like him.”

He continued: “I was surprised I wasn’t picked because I knew the other guy didn’t do well and I didn’t like what Rodney did.”

Rodney was kind of calm. I remember him because I told my brother about this one guy who was kind of good looking but kind of scary.

Jed said he spent more than two hours with Alcala in ABC’s green room, swapping stories with him and the other bachelor.

However, he recalled that Alcala was a “man of few words”.

“Rodney was kind of calm,” he said. “I remember him because I told my brother about this one guy who was good-looking but kind of scary.”

Jed added: “He always looked down and didn’t make eye contact.”

“Every now and then he would spit things out and then fall back into his reserve. He was kind of a scary guy.”
