State police release video showing a 2023 accident that injured a trooper

Authorities have released new video showing a shocking accident during a New Jersey State Police traffic stop on the Atlantic City Expressway.

The crash occurred nearly a year ago, but the video was only released by News 12 following an OPRA request.

The accident occurred on October 27, 2023 in Hamilton Township. The video shows a state trooper on the side of the road when a crash is heard behind him. Then chaos ensues.

Officials say it was a traffic stop. Several police officers were searching a vehicle when out of nowhere a driver on the highway plowed into all the cars that were stopped on the side of the road.

It was immediately clear to those who were uninjured how serious the incident was. A state police sergeant was ejected from his vehicle and fell onto the grass. He suffered serious injuries. There were two other victims in the car that caused the accident – the driver was trapped.

All victims were taken to hospital – the sergeant by helicopter. They all survived, but officials say this is a stark reminder of why New Jersey’s Move Over Law exists. The driver who caused the chain reaction accident stayed in the lane closest to the police cars and never moved further.

State Police have not released information about why the driver crashed into the patrol car or whether charges were filed.
