Step into Superkül’s Ridge House

Nestled in the green hills of Ontario’s Gray Country, The Ridge House sits in the liminal space between a gentle, grassy hillside and a forest. The residence is a project by Toronto-based architecture firm Superkül. The authors strongly considered the nature and nuances of the place when designing this family home for their private client.

For the architects, preserving and dealing with the surroundings was of utmost importance – as was ensuring that this was a piece of sustainable architecture that respected the natural surroundings and worked with passive design strategies. It is a house created to connect its inhabitants to their context in all four seasons, while remaining unobtrusive (in the truest sense of the word) and maintaining a certain level of openness to nature.

The team writes, “We not only designed with the land, but also found imaginative ways to bring it inside.” The master bathroom overlooks a courtyard located beneath an opening in the split roof structure that opens up to the sky opens. “This private garden is concealed by thin wooden slats on both facades, which together with the opening create a feeling of airiness and filter light into the core of the program.”

The volume of the house is inspired by the local landforms, and the interior also feels equally sensitive to the site in terms of colors, materials and textures. At the same time, it exhibits strong contemporary minimalism throughout.

The single-story interior includes a living room, dining room, and master bedroom and bathroom. A guest wing contains a TV room, gym and garage.

Moments like the fire pit under the vaulted marine-grade plywood ceiling in the living space provide coziness that balances the high ceilings and dramatic, geometric skylights that help the owners track the sun throughout the day—and stuff create a modern and comfortable space, fit for any weather.
