Wichita East HS hosts election town hall for first-time voters

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Wichita East High School hosted an election town hall Tuesday, an opportunity for a group of students and first-time voters to meet local candidates for office and gain a clearer understanding of why fulfilling their civic duty is now important at every level.

“You don’t just vote for the president, you vote for county commissioners, you vote for county judges, you vote for the House of Representatives, senators and people who make the laws and decisions in your district,” said Amya Williams, who served as Wichita’s youth mayor Mayor’s Youth Council represents.

Students said the forum was a unique opportunity to bring to light the importance of voting at the local and national levels.

“It really gives me strength to know that I made a decision that can help my community,” said an East High School senior who was preparing to vote for the first time. “I really feel like an adult because I made the decision to just turn the tide and make my voice tough.”
