The Islanders fail for the third time in 6 games and lose to the Red Wings 0-1

ELMONT, N.Y. – Controlling the game is all well and good, but the New York Islanders couldn’t do anything with it Tuesday night at UBS Arena as they fell 1-0 to Alex Lyon and the Detroit Red Wings.

The Islanders outscored the Red Wings 29-10 on the night, but Lyon fended off everything thrown at him while Patrick Kane scored the game’s only goal midway through the first period.

In six games this season, the Islanders (2-2-2) have already been eliminated three times. It was also the fewest shots the Red Wings recorded in a win since 1959.

Detroit’s first shot of the game found the net 8:54 into the first period. Patrick Kane fired a one-timer from the bottom of the left circle over the glove hand of Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin to give the visitors the lead.

It was the only goal of a first period in which the Islanders defeated Detroit 8-3 – the Red Wings’ last two shots came in the final two minutes of the stanza.

Lyon kept the Islanders off the field until the second period – another period in which New York soundly defeated Detroit 13-5 – particularly with two highlight saves that seemed to prevent certain goals.

Five minutes into the second minute he parried Mathew Barzal, who was free at the right post from point-blank range. Midway through the period, Lyon built up its defense to ensure that Anders Lee couldn’t convert a power play chance from close range.
