The first game on Tuesday is the traditional opening night. The Boston Celtics will get their rings and Face the team who made the most striking moves of the offseason: the New York Knicks. The follow-up is something else. Home is the defending Western Conference champions, the Dallas Mavericks, and in their place are some of the conference’s biggest stars.

In one corner we have LeBron James, the now 22-year-old veteran and face of the game, leading his Los Angeles Lakers into what will likely be one of his final professional seasons (and the first in which he shares a roster with his son). . In the other corner, we have Anthony Edwards, the rising star who will eventually replace James as one of the league’s cornerstones. His Minnesota Timberwolves were on the other end of the mega-deal that made the Knicks such a compelling pick on opening night. Karl-Anthony Towns is now in New York. Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo are Timberwolves.

James didn’t win once on opening night as a Laker. He drained all six attempts for a total of 59 points, about 10 per game. For some reason, the James-era Lakers were pretty bad on symbolically important regular-season nights. They lost when he broke the scoring record. They lost their first game after Kobe Bryant’s death. At Christmas there are 2-4. There’s no logical explanation for any of this, but the Lakers have tended to struggle in big regular-season games over the last six seasons. And yet they are favorites at home against a team that has won nine more games than a season ago? Don’t think about it too much. The pick: Timberwolves +1

The Timberwolves had the NBA’s best defense last season, and while Towns may be gone, the core elements of that remain. However, their spacing on offense was compromised with Randle replacing Towns. This makes it much more difficult for them to score at the rim. Do you know who is waiting on the sidelines for the Lakers? Anthony Davis. Minnesota is still figuring out how to score in a post-Towns world, while the Lakers will have their hands full against Minnesota’s best defense. This will be a low scoring game. The choice: Under 222

Minnesota will realize over the course of this game that their only way to space the floor properly is to play Donte DiVincenzo as often as possible. He won’t be in the starting lineup, but the Timberwolves will see the difference in their offense with and without him on the court and eventually decide to give him more minutes. I expect him to finish this game. Against this background, 12.5 points seems a bit low. The choice: DiVincenzo over 12.5 points
