Get into the waste-free holiday spirit

Published on October 22, 2024

What’s better than celebrating the holidays and keeping Huntsville clean?

These simple but effective ways to reduce waste and trash this holiday season can add to your enjoyment and contribute to the well-being of your community:

  • When trick-or-treating, bring a reusable bag for candy and an extra bag to catch any trash. Aside from keeping the neighborhood clean, this is a valuable lesson.
  • Make costumes using materials you already have at home or find at a thrift store. It gives new life to old objects. And be sure to recycle or donate costumes after Halloween.
  • Look for Christmas decorations that are reusable or made from natural materials. And save them for next year instead of throwing them away.
  • Make sure your outdoor decorations don’t become waste. Secure all lights and displays to withstand wind and rain.
  • Wrap gifts with recyclable paper or reusable fabric. Or consider using newspaper or brown paper bags with a personal touch.

Small, conscious decisions during the holidays can make the celebrations more enjoyable and also promote #LitterFreeHSV.
