ABOUT BEFORE & AFTER

HOUSE TYPE: Apartment

PROJECT TYPE: bathroom

STYLE: Cottage, Farmhouse, Vintage

Skirts in living spaces are on trend this year, although they are more of a retro idea. Finally, a sink or cabinet apron can instantly add cottagecore charm to a kitchen, bathroom, or laundry room. The latest in adorable sink skirts are in Madeline Warshaw’s bathroom, which wasn’t quite as adorable when she got the keys to her Philadelphia apartment.

“The bathroom was fine when I moved in, but there were some logistical challenges,” she says. “There was a pedestal sink, an old door in the middle of the room that was sealed (a remnant of the building before it was built), and only storage space for a medicine cabinet mirror.”

Madeline adds: “I needed better room flow, more storage and personality!”

An IKEA cabinet adds an additional countertop.

One of the biggest turning points in the bathroom remodel was the IKEA cabinet placed above “the weird old, mysterious door that doesn’t lead anywhere,” says Madeline. “The large IKEA dresser actually offers the most bathroom counter and storage space I’ve ever had,” she adds.

Madeline chose the IKEA HAUGA chest of drawers with eight drawers.

The sink skirt was a DIY project.

Madeline worked with her grandma on the sink (which she can hide even more storage space under). They transformed water-repellent outdoor material into a cottagecore skirt with a few pleats. Madeline says the project “helped transform a pedestal sink at Home Depot into a charming focal piece that really sets the tone for the room.”

The other standout fabric in the room is the curtains. Madeline got it from Mini Rodini and the adjacent bedroom actually has a matching bedspread! Her rug is from Hay, her spray pots are vintage jars, and her Matisse poster is from the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It all came together to create a space that Madeline loves.

“I wish I had a clawfoot tub, but everything else about this bathroom is pretty dreamy,” she says. “It’s going to be incredibly bright!”
