Washington-Liberty girls are first in showcase cross country meet

Led by a tight group of runners, the Washington-Liberty Generals recently won a showcase cross-country duel.

The high school team scored 152 points and took first place in the girls’ elite race at the Virginia Showcase meet Oct. 19 in Mechanicsville near Richmond.

Washington-Liberty’s top five runners finished 13th-50th in the 5,000-meter upper course at Pole Green Park.

The Generals’ top runner was senior Alba Edsall in 13th place in 19:17.4. Washington-Liberty sophomore Meg Lubas placed 30th (19:51.5), junior Mina Dowler placed 31st (19:52.3), senior Therese Johansson placed 43rd (20: 10.3) and senior Ella Kaplan placed 50th (20:13.2).

Also for WL, senior Katherine Floom placed 54th (20:17.6) and senior Sienna Williams placed 57th (20:21.6).

In the boys elite race, Washington-Liberty placed 15th, led by junior Morgan Fritz in 49th (16:47) and sophomore Jackson Fowler in 63rd (16:53).

In the meet’s standout boys race, Washington-Liberty senior Emmett Englehardt placed 17th in 15:11.6. He was the only WL runner in this race. The winning time was 14:47.6.

Englehardt won three previous meets this season, including the Arlington County championship.

For the 25th-place Bishop O’Connell Knights boys team, Lance Jayme placed 75th in the elite race (17:04.4). In the girls’ elite race, O’Connell finished 29th and was led by Grace Fumich in 58th (20:22.9).
