Trump suggests an “enemy from within” is responsible for the Israeli revelation

Trump claimed without evidence that an “enemy from within” leaked top-secret U.S. intelligence documents about Israel. The FBI is investigating the incident.

“They leaked all the information about how Israel will fight, how it will fight and where it will go. And someone – who did this? Can you imagine anyone doing that? That is the enemy. I guess that might be the enemy within that I was talking about,” Trump said Tuesday at an event focused on Latino leaders.

“We have an enemy within,” Trump continued, adding, “They hate talking about it.” Can you imagine that? That’s why we simply can’t tolerate this incompetence any longer.”

White House officials said it was not yet clear whether the documents were leaked or hacked, but they said they did not expect further leaks. The documents in question were dated October 15 and 16, respectively, and allegedly came from U.S. government agencies, including the National Security Agency and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. Its content focused on Israel’s expected retaliatory attack against Iran.

While it’s unclear who exactly Trump means by “them,” he reiterated that his “enemies within” line actually refers to his political opponents. When asked on Fox News to clarify his comments about using law enforcement or the military against those who disagree with him, Trump confirmed he was talking about former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Adam Schiff (D -CA) spoke.

“What they did is so terrible. Who has ever heard of something like this? Adam shady ship. He’s a corrupt guy. He is a corrupt politician. He will 100% be a senator,” Trump said Sunday. “Of course he is an enemy. He is an enemy. He wanted to put my son in prison.”

“We have a lot of bad people. But if you look at Shifty Schiff and some of the others, for me they are the enemy within. I think Nancy Pelosi is an enemy within. She lied,” Trump continued.

Former Trump aides, including his Defense Secretary Mark Esper, said his rhetoric was alarming and should not be dismissed.
