Twitter Files Journo helps uncover digital brownshirts trying to kill X

A left-wing organization known for targeting right-wing media outlets has set its sights on a new target: Elon Musk.

Leaked memos from the Center for Countering Digital Hate – an organization notorious for targeting the MRC in 2021 – revealed that one of their top priorities was to “kill Musk’s Twitter,” according to independent journalists Paul D . Thacker and Matt Taibbi.

CCDH is a radical organization that targets groups it describes as spreading “online hate” and “disinformation” (or in other words, statements it disagrees with). The decision to target Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) came less than two years after the technology mogul vowed to uphold the First Amendment on the platform.

The leaked CCDH memos, published Tuesday in Substack’s The DisInformation Chronicle, laid out monthly and annual goals and secondary priorities in bulleted lists for the period March to October 2024.

Targets included “Musk’s Twitter” and attempted to “trigger regulatory action in the EU and UK.” Thacker and Taibbi suggested that these efforts jeopardize CCDH’s 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status.

In response, Musk called CCDH a “criminal organization” and described its attacks as an “act of war.” CCDH joins a growing list of left-wing groups and foreign governments attacking Musk since his purchase of Twitter in 2022.

Despite criticism from the left, Musk has always advocated for unrestricted free expression within legal limits on social media. That stance appears to worry Democratic lawmakers and left-wing groups, who regularly argue that free speech and the First Amendment pose a threat to democracy.

The panic has reached such a level that it is now a central issue in the 2024 elections. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton even suggests that Americans should face criminal and civil penalties for making false statements.

Taibbi and Thacker announced that CCDH, led by its founder Morgan McSweeney, is closely associated with Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign, where McSweeney serves as a campaign adviser.

Coincidentally, Musk was a vocal supporter of Harris’ opponent, former President Donald Trump, even accompanying him to several campaign events.

Meanwhile, the Biden-Harris administration has reportedly launched a full-scale attack against Musk-owned companies The New York Times. The investigations span multiple agencies, including transportation, justice, labor, interior and agriculture.

CCDH’s influence extended beyond the presidential campaign, apparently working with Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) to push legislation against so-called “misinformation.”

In 2021, the infamous company attacked MRC, among others, labeling it part of the “Toxic Ten” responsible for spreading so-called climate change denial. In another report, CCDH targeted 12 popular internet personalities and accused them of spreading disinformation about COVID-19.

In response, MRC President Brent Bozell called CCDH a “digital brownshirt,” referring to the 1920s Nazi Party paramilitary force.
