Sakurai spent $630,000 producing videos for his YouTube channel, Creating Games

Masahiro Sakurai released the special finale episode of his “Creating Games” video series today and gave an interesting insight into the cost of the series.

In the 40-plus minute video, Sakurai covers a lot of topics, but it’s a quick note about the channel’s cost that’s really eye-opening. If you’ve seen any of the Creating Games videos, you know that they are all extremely well produced, written and edited. Not surprisingly, this requires a lot of money.

As Sakurai revealed in the finale, he spent $630,000 on the entire Creating Games series. That’s an incredible amount of money to put into this work, and it’s even more surprising when you learn that Sakurai hasn’t monetized the YouTube channel. Sakurai says he didn’t monetize the videos because he viewed it as volunteer work to help gamers better understand the industry.
