HOUSTON – I’m not trying to scare you with this story, but I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that we live in scary times.

With all the wild news my colleagues and I have been covering, we’re all trying not to bite our nails, and a recent study from WalletHub confirms those fears by naming Texas one of the least safe states in the US

Researchers looked at all 50 states and compared data ranging from attacks per capita to the amount of damage caused by climate disasters. And Texas ranked 48th, making it the third safest state between Arkansas and Mississippi.

Louisiana was ranked the absolute least safe country, while Vermont was named the safest country.

So how can we avoid freaking out? A criminologist shared the following advice with WalletHub:

β€œI think about security from a crime perspective,” said Dr. Chidike Okeem, associate professor and vice chair in the Department of Criminal Justice & Criminology at Western New England University. β€œThe first point to recognize is that, contrary to media perception, violent crime is statistically rare. Additionally, understanding the fact that crime is not evenly distributed in cities can help with personal decision making. When choosing a place to live, one must avoid crime hotspots, that is, microgeographic areas where crime is most prevalent. Even if a city has a reputation for having a high crime rate, you don’t have to stay away from an entire city to be safe. It is enough to avoid problematic areas within a city.”
