Phoenix Suns announce New City Edition Uni and appear to confirm previous leaks

The Phoenix Suns are debuting a new jersey and it looks like it’s a confirmation of the City Edition jerseys that were leaked last month.

The Suns tweeted a close-up of the waistband of the rumored 2024-25 City Edition uniform on Monday, showing a saguaro cactus sitting atop a star in the center.

If confirmed, the City Edition jersey should look like this:

Shortly after this jersey was leaked, we also got a look at the new shorts that the team will combine with the varsity:

The Suns tweet essentially confirms that the shorts will look like the above.

The jersey is purple and features a black, green and orange stripe pattern around the neck and arms. “THE VALLEY” is stacked and written in a western font. “THE” is smaller and rendered horizontally, while “VALLEY” is slightly larger and radially curved. The lettering is white with an orange border. There is an orange star under THE VALLEY. The side walls are orange and purple, with triangular shapes (pyramids?) and blocks forming the pattern.

If the jersey looks at all familiar, that’s because it’s based on the jerseys from the 1995 NBA All-Star Game. Next year will be the 30th anniversary of this game.

You’ll notice that the 1995 ASG jerseys are similar, with the orange star being the same shape as the star on the leaked City Edition jersey. The 1995 uniforms also featured a green saguaro cactus on the orange star. While the jerseys don’t appear to have this feature, the cactus on the waistband of the shorts is present (albeit depicted slightly differently – the City Edition’s cactus stem on the waistband falls under the star, whereas on the ASG jerseys it was included in the star). ).

The shorts themselves are also purple and have a black, orange and green waistband. The same pyramid/block pattern of the jersey is repeated on the sides of the shorts. The Suns logo is located at the bottom of the left thigh and the hems are trimmed with a black/orange/green stripe.

Shortly after the jerseys were leaked, Suns Geek put together a nice breakdown of the new jerseys that’s worth a quick look:

The team hasn’t officially unveiled the new City Edition jerseys yet, but with the teaser tweet it’s likely they will be revealed soon.

I was never a big fan of NBA design in the 1990s, especially the (then) new sublimation aspects, but I’ve always loved the 1995 All-Star game uniforms, so I’m a fan of the team that remembers those This new uniform ties in with this. Of course, I think almost everyone will agree that NBA teams already have far too many jerseys to choose from, and that the “City Edition” jerseys – which have been available for more than five years now – have resulted in some terrible designs ( in most cases, because it is). It seems that the designers are running out of ideas). And I think most of us would agree that the 2024-25 uniforms (based on the leaked photos) are pretty terrible for the most part.

However, there are a few good examples, including the Suns’ new City Edition jersey. It’s one of the few that I’m really looking forward to seeing on the pitch.

What do you think of the Suns’ (alleged) new City Edition Uni? Were you a fan of the 1995 ASG jerseys that these are inspired by? Or do you think that the entire City Edition program – which may have been pretty fun for a few years – has more than had its day?

Fire away!
