The Daily: Red Wings play NYI in Frozen Frenzy; Wallinder update

The Detroit Red Wings won’t be alone tonight as they resume NHL action with an away game against the New York Islanders. Every other NHL team plays as part of what the league calls the “Frozen Frenzy.”

All 16 games will be televised on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN+. The first game begins at 6:00 p.m. ET and a new game begins every 15 minutes. The final game between the Los Angeles Kings and Vegas Golden Knights begins at 11 p.m

The evening includes an ESPN in-studio whip show with live insights and highlights from across the league. John Buccigross is the host, and former NHL players Kevin Weekes and PK Subban will share analyst duties.

This is the fourth time in the NHL that all 16 teams will play on the same night. Last season, 102 goals were scored in the 16 games of the first Frozen Frenzy. That’s an average of 6,375 goals per game.

GM Steve Yzerman was excited to see Dimitry Buchelnikov in person this summer.

Future Detroit defenseman William Wallinder has taken his game to a higher level in the early going for the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Bally Sports no longer exists. The Red Wings’ broadcast rights holder is now FanDuel Sports Network. The channels and the app remain the same.
