Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai announces his next video game project – maybe

A little over two years ago, Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai launched his YouTube channel to give fans around the world a glimpse into game development and design. Now, Sakurai has posted his final video for the channel, announcing a new project that could potentially be his first game since the release of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in 2018.

According to Sakurai, he was asked to work on a video game proposal in 2021, around the time he added Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s final DLC character, Sora, to the game. Sakurai didn’t share any specific details about the new project, but hinted that it could be revealed in the near future.

“I received a request to write a game proposal, which I completed in a flash,” Sakurai said via IGN. “I’m sorry I can’t tell you more about this project, but assuming we manage to implement it, it should be announced sooner or later.”

While that’s not much, we can probably rule out another Super Smash Bros. game from Sakurai. In 2021, he spoke about the series needing to grow beyond him, and he was unsure about where the gaming series could go next after adding an 89-character roster that featured Nintendo’s top icons alongside guest characters from Final Four Fantasy and Metal Gear were solid and more.

But considering that all of Sakurai’s previous games have been released exclusively on Nintendo systems, it seems like a safe bet that his next project will also be published by the company. We’ll have to wait for more details before the announcement.
