YTM’s Now Playing widget could appear on the cover display of the Galaxy Z Flip

TL;DR

  • We’ve found evidence in the YouTube Music app that the Now Playing widget could soon be supported on the cover display of Galaxy Z Flip devices.
  • The Now Playing widget makes it easy to control YouTube music playback.

With the Galaxy Z Flip series, Samsung has made clamshell foldable devices stylish and trendy. Devices like the Galaxy Z Flip 6 are primarily intended for use when the phone is open, but also have a cover display to make interaction easier when the phone is closed. Thanks to the use of widgets on this cover display (or “Flex Window” as Samsung likes to call it), users can get information and perform basic tasks without having to open the phone. If you are a fan of the cover display, you would be happy to know that it could become even more useful in the future as YouTube Music could support this cover display for its Now Playing widget.

YouTube Music v7.24.51 hints that Google may soon bring support for its Now Playing widget to the cover display of Samsung Galaxy Z Flip devices. This is the new widget service added to the YouTube Music app:

We also discovered code in AndroidManifest.xml (an important file that contains information about your app) that follows Samsung’s recommendations for creating a Flex Window widget on Galaxy Z Flip devices.

Once the widget is fully added and made available in the app, Galaxy Z Flip users can activate it it out Settings > Cover Screen > Widgets. We expect the cover screen widget to make it easier to control YouTube Music from the flip phone cover screen.
