Local sports teams vie for LINK nky’s Team of the Week honors

To become the winning team, the votes of fans play an important role, along with the consideration of our sports team here at LINK.

Nominations are submitted by the reader or recommended by our sports team. Our Team of the Week program is honored all local sports all Regardless of whether it is a youth or adult-oriented leisure activity, whether in high school or college, whether professional or amateur.

The new school year has expanded the awards program. OrthoCincy Orthopedics & Sports Medicine and LINK nky We are pleased about the expansion of the program. In addition to the weekly winners, the program will feature three Team of the Season winners and one overall Team of the Year winner for the 2024-25 sports season.

New to the program this year is the addition Team of the season (TOTS) And Team of the Year (TOTY) Awards. For purposes of this awards program, sports seasons are considered fall, winter and spring. At the end of each sports season, an overall ranking is made TOTS The winner will be selected from all previous ones TOTW Winner of this season. Your school will also receive a $500 scholarship, which will be awarded to the athlete of their choice at the end of the school year.

Finally the program ends with the selection of a program TOTY of the three TOTS Prize winner. Online and print articles will again be published, a large commemorative plaque will be presented, and the school will receive an additional $500 scholarship, which will be presented to the athlete of their choice at the end of the school year.

The call for nominations, voting and announcement of winners will follow the same format as the TOTW.

CAMPBELL COUNTY GIRLS SOCCER

Last week, the Camels captured their first 10th Region title since 2021 by defeating George Rogers Clark 1-0 (4-3 in penalty kicks).

They didn’t allow a single goal during the tournament, defeating Montgomery County 4-0 in the quarterfinals and Harrison County 8-0 in the semifinals

Ryan Weghorn sealed victory in the championship with her 15th goal of the season. Jozie Holmes leads the team with 24. Kennedy Crowley has 10.

Holmes and Caitlin Crowley each have nine assists, and Meryem Gonulates has eight. Goaltenders Abi Medaugh and Morgan Roomes combined for 114 saves.

Campbell County remains in Claryville for the first round of the KHSAA State Tournament, where it will face Region 12 winner Boyle County on Monday.

VILLA MADONNA VOLLBALL

It’s been a while since the Vikings were on the losing side.

They are 8-0 since September 24th and capped their regular season with a win over district opponent Dixie Heights. During this period they won 21 of 23 sets played.

Leading the team are Maya Kondik with 266 kills and 28 blocks, Catherine Gifford with 379 assists and 72 aces and Victoria Sebald with 176 digs.

Villa Madonna will face Dixie in the semifinals of the 34th District Tournament on Tuesday at Lloyd Memorial at 7:30 p.m.

SCOTT GIRL CROSS COUNTRY

The final week of the cross country regular season meets is usually a really good lead up to the regional meet.

Scott’s girls team must be feeling pretty good after taking first place at the KTCCA Meet of Champions in Lexington on Saturday.

Not only does the meet feature some of the best teams in the state, it is also home to the state cross country meet. The Eagles took first place with 35 points, 30 points ahead of the 14-team field, with Beechwood finishing second.

Scott was led by her top five runners who finished in the top 12. Evann McElfresh took second place with a time of 22:03, with Helen Schafer right behind her in third place with a time of 22:05. Then the trio Emily Klim, Ansley Lindloff and Sylvia Fasciotto took 10th, 11th and 12th place.

They will look to continue their momentum heading into Saturday’s Class 3A, Region 5 meet in Williamstown.

COVINGTON CATHOLIC BOYS SOCCER

The Colonels have been the favorite to win the 9th Region all year and backed that up with a 3-1 victory in the region championship game on Saturday.

CovCath defeated Highlands in the title game as their impressive offensive performance continued, scoring 13 goals in three regional tournament games.

Their run began with a 6-1 victory over Newport Central Catholic, followed by a semifinal victory over two-time champion Ryle 4-2.

In the title game on Saturday, the Colonels had a furious performance, scoring three goals in the first half on the way to the title. It is their first regional championship since 2021.

David Do was named tournament MVP, while Tyler Turnpaugh, Tanner Robertson and Ryan Burke were named to the All-Tournament team.

The Colonels will look to continue their season with a first-round state tournament game against Henry Clay on Tuesday in Park Hills.

WALTON-VERONA SOCCER

The Bearcats have won two straight games and are looking to get their season back on track after a 1-5 start.

They defeated Carroll County and Gallatin County in back-to-back weeks, going 58-8 overall.

In the win over Gallatin County, Avery Howe threw for 220 yards and five touchdowns while the defense had eight tackles for loss and one interception in the 35-8 win.

Michael Oldfield threw five passes for 113 yards and three touchdowns to lead the receiving corps, while Andrew Lynn and CJ Holt also caught touchdown passes.

Defensively, Alexander Yutze led with ten tackles, Cooper Burch and Gavin Roberts with nine tackles each. Lynn and Brayden Donato had the interceptions.

The Bearcats will look to advance in a matchup at Owen County on Friday to determine the No. 3 seed in the district.
