Witness recalls moments before Rigdon Park shooting

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) – New details have emerged about a weekend shooting in Columbus that occurred at Rigdon Park during youth football games.

One person was injured in the shooting on Saturday afternoon.

A witness at the scene spoke about what led to the shooting in Rigdon Park. confirmed a suspect is in custody.

It is understood there were many people in the area when an altercation ended in gunfire.

Muscogee County Sheriff Greg Countryman says the shooting stemmed from an argument. The witness we spoke to, who wished to remain anonymous, echoed this sentiment, saying it should have happened with so many people around or not at all.

“We didn’t see any fighting. We didn’t know there was a shot. It happened behind where everyone was,” she said.

The Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Bureau is investigating the shooting.

“Two women had previously had a physical incident. They were talking to each other in the park and it escalated into another incident where one shot the other,” the witness recalled. “The person who ran did not hide or flee; She told the police everything that happened.”

The woman remembers that there was only one shot.

“No matter where it was, it happened in the park where there were a lot of people,” she added.

Sheriff Countryman confirmed the shooter was taken into custody and another person was arrested for assaulting an emergency services worker.

In a statement, the sheriff said:

“I pray that those who commit crimes think things through carefully before making a bad decision. Many people only realize the consequences of their actions when it is too late. Sometimes you just have to walk away.”

There is currently no current information on the condition of the woman who was injured in the shooting.
