Attorney General Josh Stein calls for free data and internet use for Helene victims

RALEIGH, N.C. (WITN) – Attorney General Josh Stein wants to ease the financial burden on those whose phone service and data were impacted by Hurricane Helene.

Today, the Attorney General called on major wireless and internet providers to offer data and high-speed internet to those recovering from Hurricane Helene. It also requires providers to reimburse customers for costs incurred during service outages.

Stein says that after the hurricane, people had difficulty getting accurate information and security services because they didn’t have internet access or service.

“I appreciate that many wireless and internet providers have worked hard to restore service in the mountains and that many communities are back online,” Stein said. “But the people of Western North Carolina need more help. We are calling on these companies to go a step further and offer free high-speed mobile internet and cellular data for at least two billing cycles to those recovering from the storm, and to refund customers if customers were unable to use their phones. This recovery will be long and expensive, and we must all do everything we can to support our neighbors in Western North Carolina.”

The attorney general is also asking companies to reimburse people for insurance coverage they paid for but did not receive when the storm hit, as well as any additional roaming charges or overage charges after the storm.

“Many Western North Carolinians were without power, internet access and unable to use their phones – all serious risks that impact their ability to receive important updates from law enforcement and government officials as recovery efforts continue, and from organizations provide on-site support.” . The Attorney General’s Office was made aware that some North Carolinians were paying high prices to access high-speed internet on their phones.
