The warming trend continues this fall week

The warming trend continues this fall week

After a stunning weekend of near-perfect weather, the streak will continue through the first half of the week before cooling off and returning to more autumnal conditions.

Sunday’s high temperature was 77° – a whopping 17° warmer than the 30-year normal for that day. The average daily temperature on Sunday was almost 8 degrees above average. Overall our month is very close to average, but with the mild air ahead it will likely be above normal throughout the week.

Today’s high temperatures will reach well into the 70s and it’s not out of the question for it to reach over 80 degrees in some places. We will see record highs, although most of us will not break the daily records.

The October 21 record highs across New England actually date back to 1920:

Boston – 82 degrees (records date back to 1872)

Worcester – 80 degrees (records date back to 1892)

Providence – 81 degrees (records are from 1904)

Hartford – 82 degrees (records are from 1905)

Dry conditions pose a risk of fire

The lack of rain in recent months continues and the dry air increases the risk of fires starting. We do not have an alarm warning that occurs when the risk of fire is high. However, the risk is slightly higher than usual. So be extra careful when working with an open fire. The fallen leaves are very crispy. Relative humidities of 25 to 35 percent as well as above-average temperatures, wind speeds of up to 10 miles per hour and the lack of rain are contributing factors.

Temperatures will remain in the low 50s overnight, with temperatures reaching around 40 degrees in the colder spots. Because there is so much dry air, ground fog is actually unlikely.

Warm weather will continue Tuesday and Wednesday, with temperatures both days in the low to mid 70s, plenty of sunshine and relatively light winds. A cold front will move through the area on Wednesday evening, accompanied by a few showers. although most of us will actually stay dry. Thursday is expected to be much cooler with temperatures remaining in the 50s. Then at night it’s the 30s again. We will remain dry with a moderate trend until the weekend.

Southern New England: Lots of sunshine and near record warmth this afternoon. Many places are well into the 70s and some places could reach the 80s.

Western fair: Look for light winds and near crystal clear skies over the next few days. Temperatures will be around 70 this afternoon.

Cape and Islands: Even though the holiday season is virtually over, the weather during the first half of this week will be in many ways as beautiful as a summer day, with temperatures ranging from the upper 60s to lower 70s and plenty of sunshine.
