After playing Fortnite for seven years, Ms Bowie said: “I just walked into my grandson’s bedroom where he was playing on his PS4 and saw Fortnite.”

“I obviously didn’t know what it was at the time, he had to explain that he was playing it and people talk about love at first sight. Well, honestly it was for me.”

Ms. Bowie mostly plays the game with other people from around the world and has built a community in which she has made friends and followers have connected with each other.

“My community is absolutely fantastic. It’s really a constant chat and everyone is so friendly with each other. Apart from my husband, it’s my life,” she said.

“What I really like is that some people have really, really bad days in their lives. Some are not doing very well, they may have a few problems, and there is always someone there to support them.”

Ms Bowie said she was surprised by the “toxicity” she initially encountered on the platform, but now has several people “protecting” her and moderating content to ensure the community remains a pleasant place.

As for advice to potential senior players, Ms Bowie said: “Just do it. Forget your age. Just do it and enjoy yourself. Look how much fun I had.”

Because of her gaming, she partnered with Ikea for its Brannboll collection, a line of gaming room furniture.
