King Charles is harassed by Australian senator and shouts: ‘You are not my king’

King Charles was insulted by an Indigenous senator who told him: “You are not my king” and called for a treaty between Australia’s First Nations and their government.

Senator Lidia Thorpe waited until the end of a groundbreaking speech Charles gave in the Australian Parliament to verbally attack him and claim “genocide” had been committed against the Commonwealth country’s indigenous population.

Charles and Camilla faced low-profile protests during their tour of Australia from supporters of First Nations resistance to colonization, who displayed a banner reading “decolonization” at a number of events.

As Ms Thorpe was gently led from the hall, she shouted: “You are not our king, you are not sovereign… You have committed genocide against our people.”

“Give us back our land. Give us what you stole from us… Our babies, our people. You destroyed our country.”

She continued: “Give us a treaty – we want a treaty with this country… This is not your country, this is not your country, you are not my king, you are not our king.”

Who is the Indigenous Australian MP who accused King Charles?

During his parliamentary address on Monday, Australian Senator Lidia Thorpe confronted King Charles, telling him: “You are not my king.”

She is an independent Indigenous politician and became the first Aboriginal senator for the state of Victoria in 2020.

Born into a family of prominent Aboriginal activists, Thorpe regularly speaks about the impact of the monarchy on Indigenous people.

She was sworn into Parliament in 2020 wearing a traditional possum fur cape and carrying an Aboriginal embassy baton containing 441 marks, representing every Indigenous person who had died at that time since the 1991 royal commission into deaths in custody.

In 2022, she was forced to repeat her oath in Parliament after referring to the late Queen Elizabeth as “the colonizing Queen Elizabeth II.”

She said the king must instruct Parliament to discuss a peace treaty with the indigenous people.

“We can lead this, we can do that, we can be a better country – but we cannot bow to the colonizer, whose ancestors he spoke of there are responsible for mass murder and mass genocide,” she told the station.
