Here’s your first look at the upcoming Google Play Store Download Manager (APK teardown)

TL;DR

  • Google is working on a download manager feature for the Play Store that could list your recently downloaded apps.
  • We managed to enable the feature to give you an early look at the Download Manager.

The Google Play Store remains the primary destination for downloading and installing apps on virtually all Android flagships. Apps can be downloaded and installed at the touch of a button. However, this seamless process often makes it difficult to remember apps that you recently installed but haven’t opened yet. Google could help with a download manager in the Play Store that could help you keep track of your recently downloaded apps.

A APK teardown helps predict features that might be available to a service in the future based on the code in progress. However, such predicted features may not be released.

Google is working on a download manager feature for the Play Store. We discovered several strings in v42.9.16-31 that reference the function, but don’t really tell us much about what it does, other than some options for sorting the apps in this view:

code

AppOpenDownloadManager__enable_play_download_manager
AppOpenDownloadManager__enable_recent_downloads_sorted_by_install_time
AppOpenDownloadManager__enable_recent_downloads_sorted_by_schedule_time

We enabled the feature in version 43.2.16-29 to get a better look at it and an idea of what it does. The Download Manager in the Google Play Store shows all the apps that are currently being downloaded, as well as any recently installed apps that you haven’t opened yet. When you open the apps shown in the list, the app leaves the list and gives you an updated view of what you still need to open. See Download Manager in action in the video below:

Additionally, you will see the download count of recently downloaded apps and games as a badge at the top of the app details page.

Here are some more screenshots of the download manager in the Google Play Store:

The usual expectation of a download manager is the ability to pause and resume downloads, but we haven’t seen that in the Play Store’s download manager yet. As the size of apps and games continues to increase, some users may appreciate the ability to pause a download and resume later, especially if they are using a metered connection with daily update limits.

The download manager in the Play Store initially only lists the apps that you have downloaded and not yet opened. It is convenient for people who download multiple apps at once and forget to open them.

This feature is not currently available on the Play Store and Google has not communicated anything about its existence either, so it may or may not be released in the future. We will update this article as we learn more.
