PREP ROUNDUP: Alcona runners compete, soccer wins | News, sports, jobs

The Alcona High School cross country team competed in the Northern Michigan Meet of Champions on Saturday morning and the weather was perfect for running. Cole Upper finished the race with a time of 18:12, placing him 61st out of 239 runners, while Darren Boyat achieved a season’s best time of 18:47, placing him 86th.

This week the team will focus on preparing for Regionals, which will take place on Saturday in East Jordan.

ALCONA Football DEFEATS ROGERS CITY 73-6

Alcona High School defeated Rogers City High School with a score of 73-6 on Friday.

In the first quarter, the Tigers scored four touchdowns: Garrett Somers to William Liebler in the first, Evan Woods in the second, Brandon Fogle in the third, Somers to Liebler in the fourth and Somers on a 22-yard run.

The Tigers added five more touchdowns in the second quarter. The first was Travis Walker with a one-yard catch. Then Ricky Schott with a 22-yard TD catch, followed by Karsen Gonyea with a 29-yard TD catch.

The scoring was completed by Somers through Evan Borsvold and Ricky Schott, who ran in from three yards out.

The Tigers’ defense was also in the hunt, led by Keegan Ritchie, who had 11 tackles. The defense scored seven takeaways en route to the homecoming win.
