A 5-year-old Texas girl accidentally shoots herself, stepfather is arrested while incarcerated as a felon on gun possession charges

A 5-year-old girl in Texas accidentally shot herself with a gun she found in her home, officials said.

Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the 8400 block of Parasol Lane near Fairbanks North Houston Road overnight Saturday evening and learned the young girl may have accidentally shot herself, according to Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.

The child was transported to a hospital in an ambulance and underwent surgery there. She is expected to survive.

The girl’s stepfather, 33-year-old Jason Nguyen, was arrested on charges of being a felon and possession of a weapon and a controlled substance. He was booked into the Harris County Jail.

There were other children and adults in the home at the time of the incident, the sheriff said.

The incident remains under investigation.

According to Fox 26, Nguyen was convicted of multiple felonies and sent to prison in 2014 for being a felon and possessing a gun.

In August of this year, Nguyen was arrested again and charged with weapons possession.

He posted bail and was reneging on that bond when his stepdaughter shot herself, records show.
